I used to do US-EU roundtrip free (some fees/taxes excluded) with AMEX Gold and Platinum. I think I reached my lifetime max.

They are trying to get me to upgrade to Platinum. I could do that get an extra 30k in points and then the year after pick up another big glob of points by upgrading to their reserve card. I currently have 85k points banked with them.
You are better off applying for the Platinum or Reserve separately to get a sign up bonus that is much larger than the upgrade that they offer you. Once you get the new card, cancel your current card. Just remember, you have to upgrade in order to be eligible for the sign up bonuses. If you go to the Reserve, you would not be able to get a sign up bonus for the Platinum at a later time.
