What a difference 25 years makes. Then, I was waiting for a co-worker to drive me to the airport for my flight. Now, am waiting for my sister to drive me to the eye doctor.
Nothing can beat the anticipation of that first trip. Had been to Reno a few months earlier and everything there looked so big. But was nothing compared to what I was about to see. Some sights and thoughts are impossible to forget:
a) not all the busses were air conditioned. The heat was beyond all belief.
b) all the slot machines still took and dispensed coins or tokens
c) the collection at the cathedral had people dropping in casino chips
d) going with about $1,000 but returning with $14 taught me to keep 'winnings' separate from gambling budget. It's okay to risk money once but not anymore than that.
e) was to stay at some property called the Holiday Casino but there were problems there so chose the Flamingo instead and would stay there the next few years on each visit.
f) had absolutely NO idea how to play blackjack and learning basic strategy later would make all the difference.
