8/6/12 - 8/10/12 LVH(2 days) and Rio for Summer Splash tournament

Left San Fernando Valley at 5am to avoid driving in heat of day. Arrived at LVH 10;30am
Tried to check-in and was told rooms not cleaned yet-I like it when they will at least give you a temporary check-in so you can use freeplay or dining credits while you wait for room. This was not an option according to the check-in desk clerk. Had to wait until 2pm for same clerk to check us in. He must have needed his coffee as he was nicer at 2pm than he was at 10:30am.

We had a comped room, with a free upgrade to a Grand room, but also had the option of a Resorts room for $25 a night. Went for the Resorts room, figuring we'd make it up on continental breakfast and snacking during the day. Didn't go for evening wine, but it was there if you wanted it.
Breakfast items included fruit tray primarily melons and bluberries, apples, bananas, croissants and danish, individual boxes of cold cereals and oatmeal instant bowls, yoplait yogurt cups, coffees, teas, milk, hot water, juices, sodas, and bottled water, There were a few husbands that came to get wife some coffee and grabbed a couple of items to take back to room. If you reserve a Resorts club room make sure you get the "gold resorts club" room key(card) when you check in to hotel, you need it to access the door to the resorts club lounge.
It opened at 6am and closed at 10pm I think.

High limit room now has the tournament slots that had been in sportsbook area. High limit slots are dispersed in with lower denomination slots, so look before you play to make sure you are playing the denomination you thought you are playing. Baccarrat lounge is closed. They moved the slots that were near the Shimmer theatre to other areas of the casinos to make way for those video dealer machines for blackjack etc. The space casino now only occupies the upper section to the left of the space bar as you look at it. Most of the space casino is now dedicated to a club they have in the evening.

Never found a VP machine that wanted to work with me, tried $1 level as RF was just over $6,000 nothing. Played at 25 cent level up and down constantly, even went to nickel level as bankroll decreasing. Played my favorite slots and they just weren't having it in their new location.

Moved over to the Rio, no problem checking in early, hubby and I each had a comped room and were given adjoining 2 queen rooms in Ipenema Tower overlooking pools and facing strip. Rooms were 1729 and 1731, great for having guests visit or if you have family with you. Rooms also have a couch and chair with otttoman and a desk with 2 chairs. There is an honor bar/fridge in cabinet under tv and a usable fridge in clothes closet. There is a shower/tub a potty and a sink in one room with a sink and counter in an adjoining area. It was very nice.

Ordered room service for dinner one night, steak was cooked exactly medium rare as requested, baked potato was good except the skin is caked with salt and pepper. Delivery time was as quoted and server very nice and helpful. Same with breakfast room service.

As my cell charger wasn't working we went to Fry's electronics on Las Vegas blvd, then went to the Outlet mall to get hubby some shirts(he though he had packed more shirts). It was so hot waking from car to stores that hubby got a touch of heatstroke. We went back to the Rio and rested the rest of the day. Gave up on following day's plan to go over to Palms for last time for Garduno's meal. Just too hot.

Summer Splash tournament was for slots. Had 1 comped entry, could earn an addl entry when earned 100 tier points. Max was an earned 2 entries. Played 1 10 minute round with assigned time and slot, then after 3pm could pick up the addl earned entries. Checked in with people monitoring the tournament slots and could select any open slot to play for the addl entries earned. There were 3 days of this tournament and each day was a separate tournament, not cumulative. Finally managed to get a high enough round to win $100 in free play. This was awarded at Cashier with those script tickets that you put directly into the slot machine. Those who won could have selected winnings that could be used at table areas.

Remembered to swipe my players card at TR for Great Race.

VP at Rio wasn't working with me either. Played for several hours, but only got 2 4oaks. By Thursday afternoon was almost out of bankroll. I love Mr. Cashman and Cashman tonight, the "Jewels of Enchantment and African Dusk versions. Tried some Mr. Cashman and Cashman tonight. Then went back to a Jewels of Enchantment machine. Minimum bet is $.40 with max being $5.00. Playing at $1.25 a try, it was starting to produce more of the wild symbols per screen. I got that feeling that it might be a good time to have a max bet. 2 trys later I got 3 wilds and it gave me $200 for each of 6 pay lines. I got my w2G. Winning made up for loses from the previous days almost.

We had a great time and by not leaving the Rio for 4 days, I got to know where every slot machine was located in the Rio. We won't go back for a week stay during the summer again. A couple of days will be fine.
Thanks fellow SoCaler for your report!

Yes, I have been in LV in August before and that heat can be brutal. Although I was once there in June when it was 115 and that was just too much for me! I didn't want to be outside at all.

Rio is definitely a nice place (I went there many times over the years with my mother who got comped rooms there).
It's been unfortunately a long time since I've found any what I would consider playable Video Poker there at Rio (unless I don't know about something -- but my play is vastly at the Quarter level -- I almost never play at Dollar level).

With my way of play and being over in that area, I would have tried to make it over to Gold Coast or Palms to do some play there -- even if that meant doing it at night when it was at least somewhat cooler.

And yes, congratulations on your Cashman hit!

I have visited Vegas in the summer - ONCE!!!! It was 117 degrees most days we were there, and I left my batch of comp cards in the rental car when we went into a new casino - when I returned, I had a melted mess of plastic attached to a metal ring!!! Quite the sight to see. We usually visit in April or October when the temps hover in the 80s and the pools are still open. It's the best time to visit

We have booked 4 nights at the Rio in October - comped, and we have never stayed there before. I could not get the dates I wanted at Ballys, and since we have a car, being off strip is what I prefer anyway. Looking forward to seeing their rooms. If noting playable, I will just hit some other Harrahs properties instead.
Raisin, thanks for sharing your trip with us and congrats on the Cashman win.
