I went on a Casino Tour with airfare, transfers, luggage fee covered and 3 nights at Bally’s on the Boardwalk in Atlantic city. I was assigned an exit window and was pretty psyched to have the extra legroom. I should have known something was up but lack of sleep the prior night webbed the brain. As the plane filled up, I suddenly realized that I was the youngest person in the exit row by at least 15 years (I’m 55.) I didn’t know that a theme had been established.
Flight and transfers were fine and they gave us key packets at the tour desk. I’m already nervous about having no say in the room assignment. Walk into the newly remodeled room and find it is ocean view with a huge flat screen and fridge. A little close to the elevator for me but the air conditioner had a high fan setting and it would cover most of the noise….. (I thought) Might as well rant about it now…. They decide to put in a Sammy’s Beach bar with live music until 1:00am with the music blaring right at the hotel… thanks for that nice oceanfront room.
This was my first trip to AC so I really didn’t know what to expect. Maybe early on-set has completely overtaken me. I felt like Jersey Shore meets Golden Girls meets Branson, MO meets the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. You can tell that the casinos are not making much money and they sure aren’t spending it. Machines are old and screens are faded, pay tables are much worse than Vegas and the CT casinos. I was playing at a group of machines that only had one decent screen and it was never cleaned in the whole time I was there. The people were much the same. I was eating at Pickles Deli and saw the couple beside me get up to leave. This guy was probably in his mid-70’s and was wearing a shirt with the sleeves cut off and a pair of paisley shorts…. The first I thought of was Larry the Cable Guy being embarrassed to see this guy in public.
If I ever come back to A/C I will stay at one of the hotels in the Marina district and avoid the carney atmosphere of the Boardwalk.
I guess that is enough negative… now for the positive. Caesar’s did a great job developing the Pier Shops. The third level has some great restaurant options including the Phillips Seafood Restaurant and sister to Game On out of Boston. Game One is a great sports bar and worth a look see. They also had Shiner Bock, one of my favorite beers. Unfortunately, by the time I left town, they were down to one beer.
I would like to thank Atlantic City for making me realize a couple things about Las Vegas
• Tough access generally keeps low-lifes like me out
• Competition is a great thing when it comes to gaming and nightlife
• In comparison to AC, there are no low-lifes in Las Vegas
