We usually go to Las Vegas this time of year to celebrate my birthday (Jan 31) and escape the rain in our area ( just outside of Vancouver, BC) and this year was no exception. Originally I had 2 nights booked at Bally's @ $20 but then got an offer in the mail for up to 3 free nights, $25 dining credit and token $10 free play so took advantage of that offer ( free is free !). Was surprised to receive this offer as we are lowly minimum bet penny slot machine players and very seldom stay on the strip. Last time we stayed at a Harrah's property was Nov 2012 and we stayed 1 night at the former Imperial Palace. We usually stay downtown at The D ( former Fitzgerald's) and they again came through with an offer of 3 free nights, $25 free play, $25 match play and a small dining credit.
Sunday, Jan 27 - Our flight left Bellingham, WA on time about 11:40 am and we arrived in Las Vegas at almost 2:30 pm. Grab our suitcase off the carousel ( about 15 minute wait) and take the shuttle to Bally's. There have been some queries on the boards lately about taking the shuttle - we don't mind taking it, everbody on board is normally in an upbeat mood arriving in Las Vegas and you get a "free mini tour" as it stops at the various casinos. By the time we got to Bally's and through the check in line up it was past 3:30 - desk person gave us room 1106 in the North Tower and we were close enough to the 4 pm check in time that there was none of this nonsense charging early check in fee. This was our first time staying at Bally's and we were impressed - the hallways seemed so wide and we were pleased with the cleanliness and size of our room. By this time it was past 4:30 pm so down to the casino we went - bought a keno ticket with our "lucky" numbers and then went in search of something to eat as we were starving - breakfast in Bellingham at 8:30 am was a long time ago ! Had an early supper at The Victorian Room at Bill's Gambling Hall and Casino - we shared a beef dip and each had a bowl of soup - bill only came to $12.96 so I think we did not get charged for our soups. We went back to Bally's to play slots as I like to give my business to casino that gives me offers. I played various slots cashing out small wins but my husband couldn't seem to win on anything. We walked down to the Flamingo and played a few slots there and had a late night "snack" of eggs,Hashbrowns and toast at the Johnny Rockets in their food court, then headed back to Bally's and up to bed. I think I was probably up approx $100.
Monday, Jan 28 - I am an early riser no matter what time I go to bed so as per our normal routine I was up early and went downstairs to wander around and play some slots. I was trying to scope out food options in Bally's. They have what they call the Sidewalk Cafe but they seem to be only open for breakfast and lunch. I took the escalator down one level (they way you go to the Monorail) and the area was under construction with lots of signage saying there will be a Subway and Johnny Rockeets opening soon. Noticed some sort of fast food Pizza place also. Once I got back up to the room and collected my husband it was almost 9 am so we walked along the passageway towards the Paris - we were still full from our late night snack . Played some more slots and eventually ended up at Harrah's and had early lunch about 11:30 am in their cafe. I thought I had read somewhere that the cafe was only open from 11 pm to 7 am as they were doing renovations but all their signage says open 24 hours. The rest of the afternoon we played at Harrah's, Flamingo, Paris and Bally's - our supper that evening we split an order of Chinese food from the Flamingo Food Court - ( I find I just can not eat big meals when we are in Vegas). About 12:30 am we ended back at the Victorian Room Restaurant at Bill's where we each had a bowl of soup, plus I had a cup of tea - was surprised at the price of tea - almost cost as much as a bowl of soup !
Tuesday, Jan 29 - check out day at Bally's. For breakfast we ended up having the buffet at the Sidewalk Cafe in order to use up our $25 food credit. The buffet was disappointing and I am glad I wasn't using my money. Buffet was small and everything was pre-made (even the omelets) and in warming trays. I was surprised that coffe and tea were not included - they charged $2 for the coffee and tea but really the price was quite reasonable when you think other places charge $3.50 or more. I don't think I would go to the Sidewalk Cafe again if I had to shell out my own $. We checked out of our room at 11:00 am and took cab downtown to the D . It was 11:30 when we checked in there - room was ready for us and none of this nonsense of early check in fee that some of the other properties want to impose upon you. We were given room 2137 - king bed and from our windows we could see the El Cortez . That is the quiet side of the building - when the live bands play during the evenings you do not hear them in your room. For supper I took advantage of the Four Queens birthday promotion ( buy 1 get 1 at the Magnolia's Cafe ) - have to go to the slot club and show your ID, player's card, etc to receive the coupon. Note - this is only good in the month of your birthday - eg if your birthday is Jan 30 or 31 and you try to go Feb 1 they will not honour it. We also took advantage of the promotion that if you show a slot card from another downtown casino they give you $10 in free slot play. ( Not a lot of signage that I saw in the casino but had read about it on the boards here so I asked. When we were out and about in the next few days I did see a poster on one of the wall outside the casino.) I did not have very good luck on the slots but my husband won over $115.00 on a Quick Hits machine - was playing minimum bet of 30 cents and hit free spins - got lucky matching 2 of the 20 spins plus got the wild match with the extra 5 spins so got 25 free spins at 3 x, retriggered the free spins for extra 25 free spins. We mainly played at the D as I had used the LVA coupon that for every 50 points earned in 24 hour period they give you $5 free slot play. We like to play Keno and give most of our Keno play to the D as we earn comps for our play. For the day we spent $88.50 and won $58.
Wed. Jan 30,2013 - Our breakfast this morning we had at the new and improved restaurant at the D as we had received a small food credit for our stay. They have renovated the entire restaurant and actually repositioned it slightly. Have put up walls so that you do not look directly out onto the gaming floor, Table have nice glasses for water , cutlery is wrapped up in napkins and almost as soon as you are seated a bus person is there to fill up you water glass and introduce themselves. All the staff is nicely dressed - even the bus people had on black pants, white shirts , ties and Maroon vests. When they take used dishees away they carry them away on a tray - in the old Courtyard Grill if there was even a bus person they pushed this rattling old plastic cart past your table and then loaded the dirty dishes into plastic bins on the cart. I was speaking to some of the staff when I paid our bill and they said everyone had to undergo 2 weeks training that included memorizing the menu . Lighting is a little on the dim side for my liking - felt I should have brought my little pen flashlight to read the menu clearly. It appears they are trying to present and more fine dining atmosphere. With service comes a price so the prices are more expensive than before - no more breakfast and lunch specials for unbelievably low prices. HOwever the food was hot and nicely prepared and the prices were not outrageous. On the flight down my husband had noticed in the Allegiant on board magazine that if you showed proof of your Allegiant flight at the El Cortez you could win anywhere from $10 to $1,000 free play. This expired Jan 31 so we took the magazine and our itinerary to the slot club and we each got to pick an envelope from a huge drum - both of us won $10. My husband netted about $30 from his free play and I won enough that I had approx $10 to put in a Quick Hit machine. The ones at the El Cortez are max bet of 60 cents - won a small progressive for getting 5 quick hits and cashed out at $30.25 We enjoy playing slots at Binions - they still have their Motherlode promotion on ( been well over a year if not 2 years now). You play slots and then swipe you slot card at kiosk - winner every time , even if it is only a free drink. Can win up to 3 spins per day and of course each tier level has better prizes. My husband won a free drink his first spin , then $25 free play his second, while I won $10 free slot play my first spin and $25 free slot play my second spin. For lunch we split a club sandwich and fries at Binions while our supper we split a 2 item combo at the Lanai Express at Fremont Casino.
Thursday, Jan 31. Breakfast was at the Paradise Buffet at the Fremont Casino. Even thought I had a 2 for 1 coupon in the LVA book we paid cash for the buffet $15.11 for the 2 of us. Because the coupons are limited now ( not available anymore on the Fremont Street Experience website) I didn't want to "waste" my coupon on breakfast - will save it for a lunch or dinner at a later date. We played enough at Binions to earn some more Motherlode spins - my husband won a 2 for 1 food voucher that we used for lunch and then a $10 food credit that we put towards our supper. My 2 spins resulted in "gifts" - a deck of cards and a light denim jacket with the Binions logo. The light denim jacket is more like a long sleeve button shirt but is actually quite nice. We both used our free play that we had won the previous day - my husband's $25 free play netted him $61.66 while my $35. free play netted me $35.03 ! In Keno we spent $45 and won $53.50 - yah - a profit ! Back at The D we decided to play a few more slots before going up to bed. I was not having any sort of luck on the slots so I was just sitting by my husband as he played the same Quick Hits machine that he had won on Tuesday. Again playing the minimum bet of 30 cents he hit a bonus ( free splins). During the free spins he hit 9 ? quick hits and the reels were spinning so fast that all I saw quickly was he got 90,000 credits on one spin - took both of us a few moments to realize this meant $900 ! His bonus paid $921.30 and he just turned to me and said quietly "Happy Birthday". We quickly cashed out and went upstairs to let our good luck sink in.
Friday, Feb 1 - time to go home day. Our flight leaves at 4:10 pm so we have made arrangement for the shuttle to pick us up at 1 pm. That is Ok with us as check out time is 12 noon at The D and we always like to leave ourselves lots of time to get to the airport, clear security, etc. We had breakfast at Binions - they have a special of 2 eggs, hash browns and toast for $6.95. My husband ordered a coffee and it came in a hugh styrofoam container the size of a large pop/soda - only $1.95. The breakfast was hot and tasty - better than what they passed off as a buffet at Bally's and we would order it again. Our lunch we had a small pizza from The Pizza Hut at the airport - used to be a Burger King right beside it but for some reason the Burger King is closed down. Our return flight home was delayed for approx 1 hour due to a flight crew change so we did not leave Las Vegas until almost 5:30 pm. Saw lots of merry travellers arriving off the incoming flights for Super Bowl weekend ( glad we are going home)
Recap:
Going home with only $40 less than what we brought due to my husband's good luck on the Quick Hits, which I think is a win itself as we spent over $100 between airport parking, shuttles and taxi and we spent over $200 on food/meals. This is the most we have spent on food/meals in several trips - guess because we stayed 2 nights on the strip and we generally found things a little more expensive there than downtown.
Liked staying at Bally's and would stay there again but my husband wasn't impressed with the food options. It was handy just to pop over to Bill's Gambling Hall and Saloon and either eat there or cut through the casino to get to other Harrah's properties. For some reason the first night we were there all the escalators to go from Bally's to Bill's ; the escalators by Mirage, Bellagio, etc over the walkways were shut down - my husband has arthritis and found trying to walk up stairs painful so we waited and waited and waited for elevator . We did that the first night in order to get to Bellagio to see the fountains ( the main reason we stayed on the strip as a birthday present for me). Would have loved to go back again to see the fountains but my husband did not want to endure that torture again. We found popping out the north entrance of Bally's and crossing over via a light controlled crosswalk by the area where the taxis drop off and pick up at Bally's to Bill's was the ideal alternative. The time we were there was the last week for Bill's to be open before closing for their remodel - will miss that casino and the restaurant.
The D - there are now 2 escalators going up to the second floor and 1 coming down from the second floor to the main casino. There used to be a bank of slot machines near the cashier's cage near ramp to go from the main casino to what we call the other side. Ramp is still there but the slots are gone to make way for the extra excalator. The new restaurant is very nice and everything seems so much cleaner. Staff in the new restaurant actually appear to enjoy their job and want to make your dining experience pleasant. The new steak place was not open when we were there, but then I did not go out of my way to see what their hours were. Public bathrooms on the second floor have been totally redone. Noise level did not seem to be as loud as when it first transitioned into The D. The main casino with all the dancing girls cranks up the music during the evenings but that is probably just the market they are trying to target. The bartenders during the evening at the long bar become "flair bartenders" and juggle bottles, etc - actually is quite entertaining. Before when you came into The D from Fremont Street to the right was McDonald's ( still there) and to the left past the tables it used to be slot machines. Noticed this time that the slot machines were relocated and there were about 4 or more tables (Blackjack , baccarat ( spelling ?) that were off by themselves in what appeared to be quieter area that seemed to me to be higher limits area. Our room was clean and the bed comfortable - no complaints whatsoever with our lodgings and the way we were treated by all staff. It appears all the older cocktail waitresses have retired - mostly young girls and of course the "eye candy" serve the main casino area. Can't say what the video poker inventory is like as I don't play vp but they have lots of penny machines. Upstairs on the second floor they still have the coin dropper machines but they also have some penny TITO machines . The Sigma Derby machines seemed to be getting lots of use - we would have liked to try but there were never any seats available. If you were with a group of people and could snag some seats you would have a blast. People there seemed to be having a great time and were all yelling and cheering for their mounts.
Enjoyed the overhead shows ( the Fremont Street Experience) - even though I have seen them many times it is so well done I never tire of it. I can't quite put my finger on it but it seemed to me the vibe is changing slightly - seems like there are more people . I just hope downtown doesn't become victim of its own popularity but I am probably being a little selfish - we have stayed downtown for many years before it was popular to do so and received many good deals. We have stayed at The D when it was Fitzgerald's and always felt they appreciated our business and they did bestow many offers of free nights, free play, etc and I hope they continue to do so.
