I had one of those crazy trips to the Peppermill in Reno a few years ago, walked with over $25,000 and around had $40,000 in W-2g's. Back to back $8k royals...talk about crazy!

I actually made 7* over the July 4th holiday in AC (including earning 5k TC + bonus on a 10x mulitplier day. Woo hoo!) I did as you recommended and my 7* status was processed quickly so that I was able to use my $500 celebration dinner toward my birthday celebration in August. I also got my gift in time (I chose the camera) to take on my trip. I plan on maximizing the benefits as much as possible through March 31st in 2016! The only thing is that the cruises are sold out and I don't think I can make the Vegas trip in October so I'll lose out on one of those trips this year.
