Biloxi/Beau Rivage trip

CAVEAT: I also posted this on the East Coast Board since the Beau Rivage is "East of the Mississippi." My Vegas trips of late have been same ole, same ole, not much of interest to the masses though enjoyable to me. This Biloxi trip was different, which may or may not be of interest, so reader beware.

Just returned from a three night Sun Country Airlines/Beau Rivage (MGM) package trip from Little Rock. We were extremely pleased with the whole thing, and if these offers continue "we will come." I have been getting this offer for years, never took the bait. A friend at work (before I retired...yea) told me I should give it a try.

I'm a hard core Las Vegas/Bellagio fan, but this Beau trip has changed my thinking in several ways:

1. Free flight. I spend $500-600, at best, for two of us to get to/from Vegas. I get freebies to Laughlin, Reno/Tahoe, and various other Harrah's properties. But, free airfare to Vegas is just about non-existent, for me at least. And, a one hour flight to Biloxi versus 3-6 hours to Las Vegas is almost a no-brainer.

2. The Sun Country plane was fine...more leg room than on Southwest, ALMOST as much as exit row on Southwest. Personnel great. Everything very well organized. Free alcohol on the flight to Biloxi. And...did I mention 1 hour flight time? For the flight home, soft drinks etc. only, no booze. Guess they didn't want us all driving home intoxicated...LOL.

3. Beau Rivage, as many of you know, is a beautiful hotel, much of the architecture similar to Bellagio's. Though it lacks the Chihuly glass ceiling in the lobby and the Fountain Show, both of which I love, I much more enjoyed the view from our room at the Beau of the Mississippi Sound, which of course is there 24/7, no having to watch the time and run to the window (or outside) to catch the Fountain show, no loud noise from the breaking of the sound barrier by the Fountains. Ocean as far as the eye can see, boats, birds, clouds, and quiet...loved it.

4. The $40 "convenience fee" assessed per person at time of reservation was returned as $40 added to the players cards. No Resort Fee issues to be anxious about!

5. Didn't have to go to the Players Club to get the $40 added onto the card, it was already on there.

6. The Beau breakfast buffet was $11.95, and half price for seniors on Wednesdays. The cashier didn't even mention the senior discount, just did it. OK...I look "senior"...I can take it. Plus one free buffet per person came with the trip package. Very good food, at least at breakfast.

7. The Beau Rivage Cafe is very nice, inexpensive. Huge Reuben sandwich and fries.

8. Bartender at the 875 Bar (or something like that) made an excellent Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini..I was skeptical when he suggested it, but it was wonderful. Plus, one drink filled the full size Martini glass to the rim, COLD, with about another 2-3 ounces in a side glass, really the equivalent of two drinks. And, he didn't skimp on the alcohol. I was loopy about half way through it...just as God and the Beau intended!

9. A lot of neat little shops in the Beau shop promenade, variety of jewelry and clothes etc., but without the Gucci and Hermes prices.

10. The whole place was very relaxing, very friendly staff, no crowd fatigue, no snobbery, no obvious tip expectations as in Vegas. Tip somebody at the Beau a dollar (or anywhere in Biloxi) and they act like it is a hundred. No long lines, no throngs of people bumping into you like in Vegas (on the Strip, at least).

11. The Casino Hopper Trolley is the best thing going. Cost is $1.50 for one ride, or $6 for an all day pass with unlimited riding casino to casino. They give you a booklet with the pickup schedules, and it stays pretty much to the minute on schedule. You can't get far for that price in a Vegas taxi.

12. Hard Rock is next door to the Beau, easy walk. Played a lot of Quick Hit machines (there and everywhere). Very nice casino, but that place is COLD! We got a nice Tee Shirt for sign up (or you could have a buffet instead). The other casinos, you can get there on the Hopper unless you have a car. The Hopper also has other routes which go to the beaches and other attractions.

13. Harrah's (formerly Grand) is tiny, not much there. Didn't stay there long. Perhaps they have plans to expand??

14. Also played at Golden Nugget, Palace, and Margaritaville. Did well on an Ultimate X machine at Palace. Margaritaville had a lot of fun promotions going...got lots of chocolate bars and free play while we played Quick Hit machines.

15. Didn't make it to Boomtown, which is walkable from the Beau, except that our friend can't walk fast or long so we didn't try that, and ran out of time to go by the Hopper; also didn't make it to IP or Treasure Bay. The Hopper doesn't go to Treasure Bay, so it must be a ways out. We used to like Treasure Bay when it was in Tunica, but that was eons ago.

16. Friend and I are Quick Hit machine addicts, and they have plenty of those at the Beau. (Husband is pretty much a non-gambler, but enjoys the atmosphere and silliness of it all.) I intended to play some Blackjack but didn't get around to it, being hooked on those Quick Hit machines!

Next time we will visit some of the other attractions besides casinos. Some ladies in our group told of a little 'village' they walked to "across the bridge", with shops and places to eat. I forget the name, but will check it out when we go again.

Thanks for reading.
Candy,

Glad you had a good time. Biloxi offers a lot of good reasons to visit. When you go back, try to squeeze in the Biloxi Tour Train - it isn't a train but is a jeep pulling a couple of trolleys. It's a lot of fun, and the guide/owner (Carla) tells a lot of history about Biloxi (and it is a historical town) and she shows you some sights pertaining to Katrina that will tug at your heartstrings.

Thanks for the report. I am also a Bellagio fan and will be there in a couple weeks. I have been getting those same offers from Tulsa but have never tried one. I think I will. thanks again.
Thanks for the report and the Mississippi perspective. Different (than LV) can definitely be good!

Candy -
Thanks for the TR! We were in Biloxi a few years ago when the GN was still the Isle and really enjoyed our stay. It had a "small/locals" feel despite being a big place.
You didnt miss much at Treasure Bay (unless its had a massive overhaul recently). Its small, crowded and the crowd was a little sketchy (and drunk).

If you get a chance on the next trip, check out the IP. Its a really fun place. Nothing like the Vegas property. Boom Town is a locals place with a "Western" theme. Crowded, but fun.

I think our next trip will be Biloxi over Vegas to get our gambling fix. Airfare is out of control. Unless you book 6 months out, its $500-$600 from Atlanta. We can drive to Biloxi in around 5 hours, have a car if needed and be on our own time to leave.

Thanks for the post!

Thanks, Tommy, for the tip on the Biloxi Train Tour. I will definitely put that on the agenda. We saw a lot of slab foundations where houses had been, we figured victims of Katrina.

nonsence, you will not regret trying the Beau trip from Tulsa. We have a Vegas trip planned in September, and I kind of wish we were going back to Biloxi instead.

RecVP, definitely a good change from Vegas.

Marco, thanks so much for that info on the other casinos we didn't get to. We pretty much ran outta time or we would have gone to IP and Boomtown for sure. And the weather was so nice, warm but breezy.
Candy,

You hit the nail on the head. The slabs are generally where homes once stood. In many cases, the property had been a family home for many generations and there wasn't enough (if any) insurance to rebuild - but the owner can't bear to part with the property. There are many interesting stories told on the Tour Train.

Thanks for the report. I love hearing about gambling destinations, other than Vegas.

I don't blame you for wanting to head to Biloxi instead of Vegas. I love the charter flights as well, everyone is in a great mood (at least going) and the crews are friendly. Oh and you can't beat the price (free) and complimentary drinks!

Does anyone know the reason why the casinos don't offer charter flights or airfare reimbursement to Vegas? Is it because they don't need the business? I would think there would be some down times that they might want to try to entice people in with at least airfare reimbursement.

Erin, I've always assumed that to be the case, that Vegas doesn't need to offer airfare, just dangle some free rooms, a little Free Play and food comps.

I've seen Sun Country planes at McCarran, and wondered if anyone was getting charters to Vegas, but I understand that they also fly commercially as well as charters.
