December 27: I woke up around 8:30 and could not get back to sleep. We had gone to bed the prior night around 2:00 and I was surprised I could not sleep any longer. I kissed my wife and told her I was going to go down to play a little. I settled into some triple play nickels that had a progressive and 9-6-5 double bonus. I had a real good session. I hit quad jacks on three different occasions, I hit the bonus 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s at some point during the session. I played for close to 2 hours when Kim texted me and said she was up. I was up $40 at this point so it had made up for last night.
We had planned on going hiking out on Christmas Tree Pass this morning so we skipped the showers. We grabbed a pop tart for breakfast and headed out the door. I turned the car left and was heading up the mountain when the low fuel light came on. I wasn’t sure how far it was out to the trail at Christmas Tree Pass so I decided it would be best to make a quick U-turn and head back into Bullhead City to get some gas. We found a station that was charging $1.99 a gallon and filled up. It amazes me that I could drive back 2 miles across into Laughlin and fill up for $2.58 a gallon instead if I so choose.
Kim decided since we were so far into town to run over to Walmart to pick up a few things. We still had my family’s Christmas to go to after our trip and we wanted to see if we could catch a few stocking stuffers on sale. I was surprised that they still had several bags of my favorite reeses peanut butter cups for sale. I was able to restock my yearly supply. We picked up a few gifts and headed back out.
We got to the trail at Christmas Tree Pass and started walking. It is an easy path at first, however you get to one point and you are going to have to climb up over some rocks that are pretty high if you want to go on. Right before that point we ran into a couple who were real concerned because they had lost their teenage nephew. He had gone on past this point, we told them that we would continue on and look for him. This was a tough part for me due to my fear of heights and I always wonder if my 53 year old bones aren’t going to agree with this crazy type of climbing. We made it past the short climb and continued on to the top of the mountain. It was worth the hike because we could see for miles. We could see Laughlin, Bullhead City, and way beyond. I figured we were looking at three states since we could see south forever. We started back and the trail seemed to end. I was actually getting concerned from the standpoint that we were going to have to traverse down the side of a mountain and was afraid of falling. Somehow we made it back to the trail without injury and finally back to the car. We decided it was a great adventure, but only once was fine with us.
We were hungry and thirsty so we decided to grab a burger at the In and Out in Laughlin. We wolfed it down then headed to our room for a much needed shower. We then headed down to the casino in the Aquarius and started playing. We went to the same single line nickel machines we always start at. Neither of us was having much success so I went back to the triple plays and Kim went to find a Bride’s Maids Slot machine. I didn’t have as much success as other earlier but was holding my own. I did play almost 2 hours, but between the single line loss and lack of quads I turned my $40 victory into an overall $9 loss for the day. Kim didn’t manage any better losing $22 to video poker and $32 to the greedy slot thieves.
It was close to 7 and we were getting famished. Kim had a coupon for $15 in dinning credits and I had one for $5 at the Edgewater. We decided to head to the buffet. It was seafood night and the buffet was $20 a person. We could use our coupons, or we could use an ACG coupon for by one get one free. Either way, it was going to cost us $20. We decided to use the ACG coupon and save the vouchers for the morning. The buffet was great due to one single factor for me. They had crab legs. Not only did they have crab legs, but they cut the legs long way so all you had to do was dig the meat out. Kim decided it was quitting time for me after my 5th plate of crab legs. Even though we actually paid for part of a meal at a casino, it was well worth it.
We headed over to the Colorado Belle after our meal. It was time for Kim to cut her teeth at the poker tables. We had been practicing some and she now has a good basic working knowledge of the game. She wanted to back out, but I told her this was probably one of the lest intimidating places to learn the game. They had two 2-4 limit games going so we signed up on the waiting list. We were 4th and 5th on the list so I gave her $20 and she wondered off to donate before her name was called. I sit down at some ten coin Joker’s Wild that I had played this last summer. They have a progressive for the 5 of a kind and royal flush. I hit the 5 of a kind progressive this past summer for $112, but as the trend at the Aquarius showed, I was not fairing that well this winter. This trend was making me KRANKY. I lost $10 in short order and then started hovering when my name was called to play poker.
I took me seat at the 2-4 table. I decided to play only hands that were pocket pairs, suited connectors, and two to a royal. I almost exclusively play 1-2 no limit any more, so I didn’t want to throw too much money away early just chasing junk. Shortly after starting, Kim joined me since she had quickly lost her $20 to the greedy slots. She said she was swearing off slots this trip. I laughed and said we will see. She sit behind me and watched me play trying to beg me off of making her play. I told her she will do fine. I played for almost 45 minutes before a seat came open at the other 2-4 table for her to go play. During that first hour, I hadn’t won a hand. I was already $35 down. Most of the money I lost in one hand when I had Q -10 in the big blind. It was raised pre-flop by the guy to my left. About 6 other players called the raise to $4 so by the time it got to me I was getting around 15 to 1 to make the call. I put my $2 in and saw the dream flop of A-K-J all of different suits. I lead out for $2 and mister pre raise made it $4. About 5 people called and I smooth called his raise. A harmless 3 of clubs came out, harmless other than it now made it two clubs on the board. I lead out for $4 with 3 callers bus no raise. The river was another jack and it was a club too. There was now 3 clubs and a paired board. I checked, mister pre-raise bet, the next guy raised and the new one re-raised. I knew my magically straight was in trouble so I mucked. Sure enough one guy had a full house and another a flush on the river. I went from 1st to 3rd with one last card.
Kim sit down and soon called me over. She was beaming from winning a $12 pot. She had two black aces and they held up. I told her I wished she had lost. She said I was mean. I sad know if she had lost with black aces she would have actually won $100 for aces cracked. She said if that had been the case, she went on to win two more pots and I was still looking for my first win. A seat came open at her table so I asked if I could be moved over to her table. The seat was right beside her. She was up around $10 and I was down around $50. I finally won a couple of hands and she wasn’t getting much to play. Soon players started quitting so we consolidated to one table.
Shortly in, I was dealt pocket kings. A king came on the flop and a lady in early position bet out. Three other players called and I called too. A card came that could make a straight to the smaller cards. It was checked to me and I bet $4. Everyone folded except for one player. The river was another king so I had quad kings. I bet and the other guy folded. I turned over my pocket kings to show the quads and I got a $25 bonus. We quit shortly after. I was only $2 down, but Kim had ended up losing $50. It was getting late so we heading back to our room to call it a day.
