Left out of Savannah at 720a.m.
Made the connector in ATL with around an hour to spare, just enough time to relax and eat a Chik-Fil-A biscuit before boarding. Since the airlines don’t feed you worth a hoot anymore, we’ve learned to come prepared. I brought along these incredible and ginormous chocolate chip cookies that I get from a local bakery. They really take the edge off during our long and impatient ride to our favorite place.
Thankfully, an uneventful trip for the celebratory end of the world day. Not even a fire truck escort like our last trip out. The pilot announced the plane had lost hydraulics on the left side about mid-flight and called in an emergency landing. (My personal favorite during this was the Department of Aviation truck our plane followed in to the terminal which had a big sign on the back with the initials D.O.A.-I wonder if they realize how creepy that seems. Our pilot said that he didn’t have any response from the nose gear and left side landing gear, but luckily both did engage and lock into place. The pilot set the left side of the plane down first, then the right, then the nose.)
Picked up our rental at National. After lots of rate comparisons, got our rate down to $134 (including taxes & fees) for the week, with an AARP discount. We picked a Kia Soul to try out. I think the exhaust system is loose. Every bump gives you a tinny thump under the rear passenger seat.
Had an easy drive to South Point for night one of our trip. Waited around for help from a Bellman and it was a real cluster today. I think we could have shot off a flare gun and no one would have noticed or helped. No one ever approached even to ask if we wanted valet or bell help. Good grief. We’re so used to extraordinary above & beyond help at MGM properties. We were pretty surprised at how unorganized they were. So after we went inside and registered, I took the bags out of the car and parked it while Ashley stayed under the drive-up area. When I got back no one had asked to help her so we schlepped the bags to our room.
South Point rooms are nice. The rooms are very open and roomy, well decorated, and with comfortable beds and pillows that are just right. We like having a couch in the room, also.
We went down and had a burger and fries at Steak & Shake. We always love S&S, but then again, we always seem to be on vacation, doing something we love, when we eat at one.
Put $20 in Hexbreaker and cashed out at $50. Ashley put in a little cash to a money shreader video poker machine. Left that machine to play Dueces Wild & got up enough to break even.
Went to the gift shop and found the perfect shirt “If found wandering aimlessly, return to Vegas”, Ashley had to have one. It was time to relax in the room for a bit before dinner at Primarily Prime Rib. We found it last time we were in LV and loved it. Good food, good service, good price. The Holy Grail of eating. When we checked in, they gave us a Fun Book that included dessert for tonight’s dinner, but we had a 2-4-1 deal we used instead. Whooo hoo. We’re living the high life baby! Great dinner, and with the LVA coupon it cost us $19 w/o tip.
Back for a little gaming. Hexbreaker wasn’t as kind this go around (this up and down run will repeat frequently during this trip). It took all $30 profit from my earlier session. HOWEVER, went on a 5 play VP machine and hit a Royal Flush for $200.00, so that took the sting out of Hexbreaker.
Ashley tried a couple of machines and played for a net loss of a whopping $2.25
After getting up at 415AM east coast time, we were ready to call it a night.
Walked 7.01 miles today.
Sunday, May 22
Got up at 5AM Vegas time. Cool! We can go down to get the “Cab Drivers Special”. Yea! Good breakfast for cheap. <3 Vegas!
Gamed for a bit at SouthPoint and we were used and abused. So we packed up and headed over for a couple of great massages at the LV Massage School. It’s a great deal and $32 for a couple (45min massages). So you figure if you each tip $5, you’re still only in it for $42 for the both of you. Incredible! Now it ain’t the hoity-toity spa environment, but if all you care about is the massage, than this is for you.
Got back, threw the bags in the rattle trap that is our rental, and headed up to the Monte Carlo. We liked SouthPoint, but MC is just another tier of service. Not a ton of room choices for the rate we got, but got a nice room on the 23rd floor facing the pool.
We needed a light lunch and I was hoping for some Weinerschnitzel at the Unnamed Food Court above GameWorks, but they were closed down. Grabbed a sub from Subway for the wifey and a dog from DQfor me. Subway was way expensive there, $14 for a sub, drink, and 3 cookies! Went to the ABC store to get a few drinks and snacks. Came back to the room to unpack and checked out Cosmo. What a nice property! It’s everything folks have promised. We gamed a bit. Played a variation of the Red Hot Pennies game that was Rock & Roll themed and won $50. We went upstairs to the third floor and found the unnamed pizza joint. Okay, not excellent. Two drinks and two slices ran $14. Ouch. After getting two slices and a drink in Savannah for $5.50, it’s still a bit of culture shock. After the walk back to the Monte Carlo, Ashley took a look to see how far we’ve been so far today on ye olde pedometer. Our total so far is 9.6 miles and the day isn’t over yet. At MC we decided to play a while and Daryl played his Hexbreaker and gave back half of everything he was up for the trip. Ashley played some VP and Super Times Play spin VP and was even for the night. Sounds like MGM has their machines set to suck up all your money, so we’ll have to be careful this trip. Final mileage for the day was 10.7 miles. Holy crap! No wonder our feet are a little spent. Looking forward to visiting the reflexology place later in the trip.

Planning on Aria for their awesome breakfast buffet. They open at 7am. We’ll be there!! Had an excellent meal. Went the MGM Television Center and got to watch a new show. A short stint to Downtown Vegas. Did relatively well at 4 Queens. Took a short visit to Trop and must give them kudos for the really nice upgrades to the place. Tried to go to Carluccio’s for dinner, but no such luck, they’re closed Mondays. We had a great dinner at McMullen’s Irish Pub (near the Orleans), taking advantage of several of their “Happy Hour App Specials”. Ashley had the Little Bits of Fish and we split the Irish Nachos. I had my usual, Shepherds pie.

Orleans Breakfast and a little gambling on a multiplier day (5x points if you’re 50 or older)
Paul Mitchell for Ashley’s color and cut. They have an excellent staff of “future professionals”, prices are great, just be prepared that since they are new stylists they work slowly and methodically. Five hours for color, cut, & style. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, but the results are good.
We killed around an hour checking out the Hard Rock. We’ve never been before. Ashley won a little bit on a Monkees slot machine. We headed down Trop to Carluccio’s & ended up waiting for them to open since our stomachs are still on East Coast time. Terrific dinner as usual. I had the lasagna and Ashley has the baked tortellini with meat sauce. Back to the Monte Carlo. Went down for a little slot time. I broke even and Ashley made $12 on spin poker.
Mileage 3.5 miles

VACATION! It’s what Ashley says every time something good happens on the trip. So far we’re hearing a lot of VACATION. : )
We’re up early and getting ready to head to GVR for some breakfast and a little shopping at the District. Used the LVA 2-4-1 buffet coupon and the bill came to $5.39 including tax. What a deal for a great breakfast. After breakfast, GVR made up the freebie by taking every dollar we put into a machine. We had to make a break for it, so we went down to Fiesta Henderson for another inaugural trip. Signed up for their new Amigo card and we both got $3 in free play (we could have won up to $500). I used mine in a 10 play penny VP (along with about $10 of my own money) and played for somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half. I didn’t win anything, but it was fun to be on one machine that would actually let you win every now and then. I lost count of how many 4OAK I hit, which helped to keep me going. Eventually, I zeroed out and we took a walk around the casino. We came upon some Wizard of Oz machines and one called me and I sat down. Put in $20 and at about the 2nd or 3rd roll, I hit the Ruby Slippers “Big Win” and turned my $20 into $63. Played it down to $60 and cashed out which left me about even for the day. Went back to the District and found some good sales at REI, so we had to pick up a few things. Came back to the room and crashed for a few before heading out to our favorite reflexology joint at Decatur and Flamingo Road to have our feet massaged. It sure makes a difference when you’ve had a good foot massage and your dogs aren’t hurting. Now to test how good a job they did, we were off to the Fashion Show Mall! We covered the place from one end to the other, and our feet felt fine the whole time. Finished it off with a trip to Stripburger and an excellent Bacon Cheddar burger with a dog food bowl of fries and polished it off with a cookies and cream shake. We used a restaurant.com $10 coupon and walked away for $19. We ate outside, and during the meal got to see a Land Rover and Titan pickup meet by accident – leaving the Land Rovers’ headlamp assembly in the road for a while until the owner went back to retrieve it.
5 miles today.

Woke up and headed over to MORE for a breakfast buffet and was sad to see our favorite server (Mickey) was no longer with them. She’d been at the Luxor since day one. No reason to go back anymore – especially, when we can go over to Aria and have a better breakfast for $1 more, or GVR/Orleans for half the price. Also, now that they’ve remodeled it, you have to serve yourself your own drinks, so no real need for servers anymore. Went over to Mandalay Bay to game for a bit and found that our favorite host was no longer there. Wow, two sets of bad news in one day. I just lost cash playing different games…until I found Hexbreaker, that is. Turned $40 into $98 rather quickly and walked away up for the morning. Ashley put some money into a VP machine and was dealt a pair of 5’s, then was dealt the other pair of 5’s for 4OAK turning $10 into $40 and she cashed out. We walked over to Lush at Mandalay Place, since that’s one of Ashley’s favorite places. They have natural soaps and cleansers that don’t irritate her allergies. We came backed to the room and crashed a bit before going out to the shops at Pallazzo and looking through David and Goliath. We then headed over to Casino Royale for one of their signature strawberry margaritas and to make a contribution to their profitability. After leaving the shops, I was feeling a bit hungry, so we drove over to Metro Pizza on Tropicana. Got there at 2:30, which we found out is happy hour with half-price pizza! A small thick crust, two topping pizza and two diet Cokes cost us $11.89 before tip (much better than that $14 Subway deal). Excellent! BTW, the happy hour is a promotion this month and lasts from 2:30-4:30 (not at all locations). Came back to the room and did some preliminary packing before going downstairs to game a little more.

We had a little Mickey D’s for breakfast before heading back to Fiesta Henderson. FH was not quite as kind today as earlier in the week, but our money lasted much longer than it did at MC and MB. We came back by Lush at Mandalay Place to pick up some skin/bath products they were out of yesterday. We dropped them off in the room before heading off to the Yard House at Town Square to have lunch with some local folks active in our favorite cause of retired racing greyhound adoptions. Quite a delicious meal was had by all and they have something like 140 different types of beer on tap. Their glass-walled refrigerated keg room is quite large and the kegs are double stacked. It’s quite something to see. Ashley had a tasting menu of four types of beer to find one she liked, which ended up being “Speakeasy White Lightning”. We look forward to seeing our local friends each year and this was a great place to sit back, eat a good meal, and catch up.
Got back to the hotel and walked over to New York-New York for the first time this trip. We have to go to the bakery next to the restaurant “America” and pick up some of their delicious chocolate chip cookies to bring back for a snack on the trip back. We played a few games with the same result as other MGM resorts this trip.
Came back to the hotel and had supper at Subway. We’ve eaten so well this trip, we needed something light as we would be going to bed early and getting up early tomorrow for the trip back.
We did a little gaming, with the same result as before. The machines were still set on vacuum.
Walked 7 miles today.
Saturday, May 29
We got up early to get the rental car returned and get through security as we had a 7:15 a.m. flight, with a three and a half hour layover in ATL. Security is getting stranger every trip. Now, you have to take your belt off, along with all the other things you must do. An older female TSA agent barked at me “Sir, you did not take everything out of your pockets. What is in your pocket?” I reached into my pocket and pulled out my traveler’s checks and cash and said “My money”. So they sent me through the new X-Ray machine to make sure I hadn’t hidden anything other contraband. If they think I’m going to put my cash into their hands for safekeeping, they’re nuts. I always keep my cash on me and it’s never been a problem before, go figure.
We arrived in ATL and had to have a Charley’s Cheesesteak during our layover before hopping on the connector to get us safely home. Good flights, thanks Delta.
Some other thoughts and observations:
We tried the internet at Monte Carlo soon after arriving only to find it not working. I tried various fixes and nothing worked, so I called the internet “hot line”. Got hold of a knowledgeable and courteous technical assistant and after nothing happened he said that he would dispatch someone to work on it. We were heading out, so we said not to worry, that we wouldn’t be in the room. When we returned, they had ripped out all the old wiring and run one new cable and we were up and running. Great job!
After sleeping on the bed at MC for the first two nights, my lower back was hurting. Judging by the way the edges were firm and the middle was scooped out, I figured the bed was the problem. I called housekeeping and told them the problem and when we returned that afternoon, New Bed! Now that’s customer service.
We could hear the music from the pool most days, Sunday was the loudest, but at least it ended at 6:00, so it didn’t interrupt our (usual early) going to sleep.
We tipped our housekeeper $2-$3 every day and we had fresh towels/sheets along with a good supply of toiletries every day.
Drink service at MGM casinos was non-existent, while Fiesta Henderson, South Point, etc. had decent service. For the amount of money they took, MGM could afford to give you a couple of drinks.
Left out of Savannah at 720a.m.
