Downtown 12 - 16 Sept

We flew out on Alaska from Kelowna to Vegas via Seattle. Arrived Vegas around 11:30 a.m. Straight to Dollar where they gave us a free upgrade. I never usually bother to check the paperwork but since I read several reports here that they add $10.00 to the quoted price I checked – on pick-up and return – they didn’t add $10.00 on.
Arrived Main Street Station where we had 3 comped nights plus some food credits, and we bought a 4th night at Casino Rate - $39.00. We arrived around 12:30 and were welcomed and given our room keys – none of the nonsense about early check-in fees that we see on the Strip. The room as always was excellent – old but spacious and well equipped. Safe, Fridge, Large flatscreen TV, 2 armchairs, desk, coffee table, lots of lamps – we asked for a King but because we were so early they said we will give you a room right now but King isn’t ready so 2 Queens. That worked just as well.
The show that we booked to see was cancelled so we did the buffet and played VP Thurs evening. We also took a walk to Fremont. The Four Queens, which is one of our favourites stunk so badly of air freshener/deodorizer that my allergies kicked in and we had to leave after a couple of minutes. We saw 2 porn-slappers outside the Four Queens – they finally made it downtown. Lots more panhandlers than usual but they no longer approach – they all have handwritten signs – maybe the police have warned them off. Lots more characters in dress hoping to pose with the tourists. Some were very well done and inventive – some were just stupid – an old hairy guy in a black negligee carrying a bunch or roses? Come on! ? I have to wonder at the parents who hand their kids over to some of these characters for photographs – scary!!!
Friday Breakfast at MSS and some VP, then wanted to walk off Breakfast so took a long walk around the area. The Zipline, as far as I am concerned is a HUGE mistake. The launch area is ugly but it’s out of the way – but to build a huge wall in front of the Plaza and Oscars, turning what was the best view to the worst view, is almost criminal – of course if the ex mayor/mayors husband/ex attorney to the mob can’t stop it – then nobody can! ?
Spent the afternoon back at MSS playing VP, then went to Magnolias for Dinner. The smell in the Four Queens wasn’t as bad, and barely noticeable in Magnolias. Prime Rib steak, salad and a small bottle of wine there costs $15.00 – a great deal!
Saturday we tried a Hawaiian breakfast in the Californian, Hmmmm . . . Spam or Luncheon Meat? . . . then went to the Venetian for the exhibition – 50 Best Photographs from National Geographic. We spent 3 hours there – if you appreciate great photography and the stories behind the photograph this is a MUST see. Then spent 90 minutes in Peter Lik Gallery – great photographer – but his stuff is Wayyyyy overpriced in Vegas. More VP in MSS – went to Hash House for dinner – it was OK but a mountain of food falling off a plate does not necessarily scream gourmet. Back to Four Queens – couldn’t breathe again – don’t know what they are spraying in there but I can’t breathe when they spray it. Spent an hour in Binions then back to MSS. Saturday night I had a problem at MSS and left to play on Fremont – they lost a lot of play – see end for why.
Sunday, our friend John Curry, the poker player, and his great family Annamarie and son James took us for lunch to . . . Four Queens! They don’t seem to spray the air freshener as much through the day so it was bearable, but the service in Magnolias had to be seen to be believed – it was the absolute worst service I have seen in years – and nobody cared. I ordered ham and eggs and coffee. 10 minutes later I asked again for coffee. 10 minutes later I asked again for coffee. 5 minutes later I left my seat and went to a different section and asked the server if she could please bring some coffee because my server absolutely would not. I got my coffee. My friend John ordered a bacon omelette, white toast and a large Coke. He received a plain omelette, wholewheat toast and no Coke. He told the server that he didn’t order that and she shrugged and walked away. We called the server from the other section and said that we cannot communicate with our server. Please take this off the bill and just bring a side of bacon and some white toast. That arrived. I went to the cashier and explained the whole story – and I told her that we were STILL waiting for a large coke – and a coffee refill would be appreciated - 1 hour later. Our server was seated at a table chatting with friends – I asked her was she still on shift and got a blank stare. 90 minutes later our server appeared and told John – your order will be right up! We left but will NEVER be back. What a shame – I used to be a Four Queens and Magnolias fan.
Sunday afternoon we played VP – Dinner was Seven Brewpub – great beer and good food at a very reasonable price.
Monday morning we were out before 7:00 a.m. and back to the airport.
MSS – I love this place and hope to stay there on many more trips – and the comps are great. A couple of years ago I commented to management that I love MSS but as a Scotch on the Rocks drinker, I had to point out that their Scotch on the Rocks was the absolute smallest in Vegas – and hardly worth waiting for. I was told that it wasn’t an issue – just order doubles. I have done that the last 10 trips, I am happy, the cocktail waitress is happy (she gets great tips) MSS is happy because I give them all of my gambling. Saturday night, after not only getting doubles but getting double Chivas, they changed servers,
Double Chivas please. You can’t have double unless you talk to your Casino host. OK Double Scotch please. You can’t have double, or Chivas, unless you talk to your host. No problem – I spent the evening in Binions. MSS lost a whole evenings play – she lost around $20.00 in tips.
The bit that counts – I won Thur/Fri/Sat and lost Sun. Came out $530.00 ahead. My wife Robbin was up $250.00 by Sunday – I went to bed, she took over the machine that I was playing – and hit a Royal for $1000.00. So between us – came home up $1780.00. What’s not to love? ? Thanks for reading!

Edited to correct Kink to King LOL
Awesome winning trip! Sorry about the bad cocktail waitress and restaurant server. No excuse for any of that!
Wow, great job on the winning trip, Tony! Special congrats to Robbin on the Royal, but it sounds like you both did very well. If you wouldn’t mind, maybe you could describe exactly HOW you did that, for those of us who haven’t figured it out yet, lol.

Sorry to hear about the service problems. Hopefully, your December trip will go much better in that regard.

By the way, isn’t Spam , like, SUPER popular in Hawaii? I have no idea why.

Congrats again to you guys.

Thanks for the report, Tonyrob! Good going on the gaming wins for both of you and sorry to read about your Four Queens (which I like) experience between your allergy issues and the bad restaurant service that your party received!

As for the National Geographic exhibit, I do remember seeing some coupons in the Freebie magazines for $3 (I think) off of admission per person (so anyone interested should keep their eyes open for that).

As for Plaza and the Fremont Street Experience, for the last two or three years (I think) they and Las Vegas Club haven't been part of it (paying for its upkeep) and so as for the Zipline, Plaza/LVC's not paying up may have added into the Zipline people being able to get that launching point to mess up Plaza's view of the FSE.

Hopefully I'll be paying my next visit there in a month (from about 10/13-10/17/2013).

A winning trip always makes the Vegas experience all the better. Can't believe the service at Magnolias; would definitely have talked to someone in management. I completely agree with you about the National Geographic display at the Venetian. I spent at least two hours during my April trip, totally mesmerized by the various photographs...time and money well spent. Thanks for taking the time to post your report.

Glasses can affect your vision; especially when they have been emptied several times......

Spring Break 2000 !!!
Enjoyed your trip report. I agree that the Zipline is ugly and does nothing to add to the cozy atmosphere, I like about downtown.
I agree the Zipline is too big for Fremont Street. Just got back last week, as well, and found Magnolia's uneven in its service. But the prime rib was excellent!

Great winnings! I came back with nothing, but didn't spend much either!
Sorry to hear of your bad experience at Magnolias at the Four Queens. Usually the service is quite good. As a rule based on my experience for bad service is the Coffee Shop at the Cal, and the Golden Nugget.

Last trip, I had no service issues, but ate something bad at either Magnolias or the Chicago Brewing Company on the last night. Had a stomach ache for about a week, and an unsettled stomach for another week after that.

The 10 dollar fee at Dollar may relate to frequent flyer credit. My understanding is that all rental companies charge for this. You get the same amount of mileage credit from renting one day or two weeks, but they charge you per day, max is $10. It is marginally worthwhile, I think Southwest gives about $12 in credit for the max $10. It is a good deal if you rent for only one day though. I believe if you put frequent flyer information on your reservation at Alamo the $10 fee shows on the reservation. This may not be the case at Dollar.

Glad to hear you won on your trip. Those trips don't seem to happen often enough for me. Thanks for posting.
