Rec, sorry that we couldn't get together on this trip, but I certainly understand. Hopefully some time soon. You're right, the video BJ is an easy way to just relax and rack up points, and I always enjoy the interaction with other players (video BJ is a little easier than a table game, where I concentrate more). My resolution (a little late for New Years) is to play more blackjack next time, I always enjoy it, although it doesn't generate the comps that $1 VP does. As for the Western game, I remember when it was a good SD game with ratty cards (torn corner? must be the king of diamonds again), error-prone dealers and incompetent pit personnel. The Spike had a game like that in the olden days, too.

It is amazing to see people, even good basic strategy players, betting heavier on the Royal Match than on their hand. One born every minute, right?

Rec, do you play much Pick-em? I've played a little bit, it can be a real money drain and I often get bored (less decisions to make than in other VP games). The odd thing is that Pick-em has a very low variance compared even to JoB, but it sure doesn't feel that way. It's been explained to me before, has something to do with the skewed, non-normal distribution that the big RF payout generates, but I don't really have a good handle on that kind of statistics.

As for Western, I actually have visited it several times over the years but I still have not played there. One of these days I'll play there (I might still try the ACG Blackjack coupon).

And as for Pick 'Em, I do play it on occasion. I do like its low Variance but I do know that those long losing streaks that are possible can be not pleasant. I do know (but I can't remember the percentage rate) that the Royal Flush comprises a whole lot less of the game's return in Pick 'Em than it does in 9/6 JOB (where it comprises almost 2% of the game's entire return).

And yes, I don't care much for that Royal Match stuff, but if that is where a basically decent enough Single-Deck game is, then so be it and I'll deal with it (but I'll never play it).

It is amazing how many people play the Royal Match; sometimes it seems like the main reason that they're playing blackjack. I remember reading somewhere (probably on Michael Shackleford's website) that it can be a positive expectation side-bet in a shoe game if the payouts are right. I stopped looking for that a long time ago; I don't see casinos screwing up and unknowingly offering positive situations all that often. I guess more mistakes were made in the olden days.

I can't say that the Western is worth a special trip, now that the FPDW and the good blackjack are gone. Still kind of a sight to see, but that's about it. Certainly no place for dames.
Pretty close imitation but I do not believe that is Ozzy....
Yeah, that's what I've heard. Turns out that they were having the Reel Awards at the GN, and we looked it up. It's apparently an award for celebrity impersonators.

I don't think this is Ozzy's mother, either:

Enjoyed your report as well. Somewhat surprised you didn't rent a car considering you were there for so long, but I know many people not only like to spare the expense but do like going on public transportation. You get a little more of the flavor of the locals.

As for the Sam's Town Buffet...thank you! I've been saying for years that this is the most over-hyped buffet anywhere. It's seriously below average. The only time I ever eat there is if I'm getting it comped. The food has never seemed fresh and prepared very well. The desserts are your basic imported from a wholesale bakery joint. No thanks!

Hopefully, that bell will swing your way the next time.

Jon (also)
Thanks, Jon. I was really unpleasantly surprised with the Sam's Town buffet; you're right, there's been a lot of hype, and it was hardly worth the price that we paid (nothing). I was expecting something comparable to the reasonably good Boyd buffets downtown (MSS and Fremont, the former not being quite what it used to be).

We've been tempted to rent a car, but are pretty happy getting around on the bus. Might try it one of these days; my wife has been talking about getting out to Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire some time. Could mix this in with hitting some of the outlying casinos.
Thanks for the great trip report. Like the Cubs fans in Chicago say "theres always next year".
Where did the bus from airport drop you off? I usually take the 108 to the downtown terminal but they moved it and walk to MSS. What bus did you take and how far to walk to MSS. I was told it drops you off behind the FITZ.
Have you been to CADDYS in ST.PETE beach?

It kind of sucks that they moved the northern terminal from the old DTC (two blocks from MSS) to the BTC (next to the jail). The new Westcliff Airport Express (WAX) is $2; it only runs every hour, but it's fast, it takes 28 minutes to get downtown (via I-15). The stop is at 4th and Carson, next to Fitzgerald's; the bus was pretty empty, though, and the driver was willing to drop us off at an "emergency stop" at 4th and Stewart (right next to the old, abandoned DTC), so that saved some walking. The stop for the trip back to the airport is at Fremont and Casino Center, right next to Binion's; it's a shared stop with the SDX and the CX, you have to be sure to get on the correct bus.

You can still take the 108, but it terminates at the BTC, and you'd have to get a 2-hr pass ($3) instead of a single ride ($2) and transfer to another bus (106, 207, 208 or 214) to get up to Main and Ogden. I might walk from the BTC, but it's a long walk and not for wives.
