El Cortez short weekend

Day 3 - Tuesday

Up at 6:30am, spent the time before Siegel’s 1941 opened at 7am packing for my return flight.

I used my $25 comp to get their 2 eggs breakfast which comes with bacon (or sausage) hashbrowns and toast.  The Neuske’s bacon was good but needed more crisping.  $19 is a bit steep for this plate of food.  I also ordered a latte, which they charged a ridiculous $9.

If I didn’t have the comp to use I would have gone to PublicUs for a much tastier and varied menu.  PublicUs is a favorite breakfast spot of mine located on Fremont and Maryland.

I left a $10 tip for the waitress and paid for the meal with the comp and comp dollars.  Definitely overpriced, but the staff was pleasant and attentive.

With a few hours to fill before leaving, I played some triple triple bonus poker and after a couple hundred in (at .50) I hit deuces with a kicker for a grand.

If I would have stuck to video poker this would have ended up a winning trip, but the slot play took a chunk of the winnings leaving me with half my budget intact even after 2 nice poker wins.  Still a great trip overall.

I also had a match play for $25, which I didn’t use.  I just had no desire to hit the tables this trip, so I left money on the table by not using it.

I headed for the rental car return and it was an easy drive since the freeway bridge construction of the previous years was finally completed.  What a nice change.

No line at the return and only a small line for the bus to the airport.

Flight was out of the B gates and no one was in line for TSA so I skipped Clear.  What a change from the March Madness lines!  I’ve never seen a zero line at security in Vegas before, but then again I’ve never flown out on a Tuesday either.

The construction was completed for the new bar in the gates area so I had a seat there.  Ordered some kind of spicy melon margarita and a rather good quesadilla.  The chicken was roasted with a nice flavor and although it needed more salsa and crema on top it was a solid and tasty option for an airport meal.

Nice trip overall, good room at El Cortez.  Next trip is in August and at the Plaza so looking forward to it!

Thanks for the report. FWIW - I used to really like El Cortez - then the new owners removed most of the decent video poker. And Siegel's has really gone bonkers on their prices. Even the senior Wednesday menu has fewer items to choose from and the prices are no bargain. I did find a couple of decent 9/6 DBLBonus video poker machines last time I visited some 6 weeks ago in the new area - but that was it. Also, I no longer receive any free room comp offers since I don't play enough video poker to qualify like I did the past 4 years. El Cortez has been cloned into a strip casino with their games and comps. Each time I visit, I valet my rental car - it is worth the $3-5 to me and the valets are great. One last thing - the airline boarding pass free play/ free drink and $25 match play offer at one time was 3 then 2 times a year, now it is once a year.

I agree, their VP isn't great, but I play some atrocious games.  Siegel's is way overpriced for a diner style restaurant.  I hadn't gotten a room offer in a long time but I did use their website link to update my contact info and now that I look at it, I received an offer just a few days later.  Might be worth doing that.

The good old days: simply belonging to their players' club got you three free nights a quarter, and they had fullpay Joker and DB. Sigh.

I had a lot of fun with their blackjack games when they were playable. They sweated those games SO much! I remember the pit slug telling the dealer to shuffle up when I increased my bet from $5 to $15 (!!!). At that point, I would have had a 30 cent +EV, so he saved his bosses big time!

Siegel's is pretty decent quality-wise, but insanely overpriced. That space used to be called Somebody's Kitchen (I think), and was the best steakhouse downtown.

ElCo was my Las Vegas "home" for many years. Never paid for a room, mostly stayed in a tower suite. Siegels is absolute shit compared to the old steakhouse - was named Roberta's (after Jackie's wife.) Changed to The Flame after she died. Great food and top notch service. Used the LVA BOGO coupon there many times. They  also had an affordable and excellent 24 coffee shop with good cheap breakfast specials. Then Jackie died and it's been downhill ever since. I played blackjack there for over twenty years before getting flat-betted by the new regime. Didn't matter, because they began destroying their decent blackjack shortly afterwards. Oh well, was a great run while it lasted... These days I only stop in once in a while to visit with all my favorite dealers and pit bosses and play my favorite DDW video poker coin dropper. Thanks for the memories, ElCo!
