SATURDAY CON'T
After the Mob Museum tour we walked over to the Golden Gate and sat at the counter at Dupar's and each had a shrimp cocktail, tasty. We played some slots at the Gate, daughter won ten bucks and I lost 20. We walked back down Fremont street to the El Cortez and decided to take advantage of the 2 for 1 premium cocktails in their lounge; two martinis for 8 bucks...can't beat it. The lounge was standing room only. There was an Elvis impersonator performing and there was a large group of people celebrating someone's birthday. The cocktail waitress was able to find us each a seat, so we sipped our martinis and enjoyed the entertainment until it was time for our dinner reservation at the Flame. We checked in and were immediately seated and were greeted by our friendly waiter. I inquired about the Stone crab special that the El Cortez has on Fridays and Saturdays during the winter months. I was informed that they were not offering the special during Super Bowl weekend. I told the waiter that I had checked their website 2 days ago, and they were still advertising the crab special. I got a polite smile and a sincere apology from the waiter...oh well, not his fault. We ordered a bottle of Chateau St Michelle Canoe Ridge merlot and then scanned the menu. My daughter had the french onion soup and the tournedos of beef Rossini while I had the caesar salad and the prime rib. We shared a baked potato and an order of the grilled asparagus with hollandaise sauce. We did not see anything on the dessert menu that jumped out at us, so we had an expresso to finish a very satisfying meal. I used my LVA coupon so the total came to $70...outstanding.
We walked back to the Gate and picked up the car and headed for the Mirage and valeted the car. The Mirage was packed with fun seekers and gamblers. We purchased a cocktail at the theater bar and then settled into our seats. Section 209 row K, seats 6 & 7...right in front of the tech booth. My daughter really was impressed with LOVE, it's now her favorite show that she has seen in Vegas. Being in the theater business herself, she was blown away with the complicated technical aspects of the show and how everything flowed seamlessly. We walked back through the mass of humanity to retrieve the car. We had to weave our way through the idiots waiting to get into the 1OAK nightclub...can you say the "D" word? We played some slots and video poker at the Orleans until I told my daughter that I was packing it in for the night at 2 AM. She said that she wanted to play a while longer so I turned her loose. I had been playing a spin poker machine, didn't have any good hits, so I moved to the machine across the aisle and continued play. About 5 minutes later I remembered that I had left my Heineken by the other machine. I turned around in my chair, reached over and picked it up, taking a healthy swig. I continued drinking my beer on the way back to the room and it was only then that I had discovered that someone had deposited their cigarette in the bottle when I had my back turned playing the other machine..eeewwww!!!. I brushed my teeth and gargled three times before climbing into bed. One Vegas experience that I wish I could forget, but probably will haunt me....shudder.
SUNDAY Feb 3
My daughter slinked back into the room a little after 3:30, but we were up at 8:30 ready to go. We ate at the buffet which was pretty good. Getting our bets down for the game was next on the agenda, but the line at the sportsbook was huge. We picked up a betting sheet with all of the prop bets and found some nice easy chairs in the Bourbon St lounge; right in front of the big screen...prime real estate. It was only a little before noon, so we had a 3 hour wait before the game. We each took turns saving our seats while the other one went to place their bets and walk around the casino. The set up in the lounge was great, comfortable seats and lots of TV screens for viewing the game. They had a table set up with food items to purchase: hot dogs, chili dogs, chips and nachos with cheese. The also had buckets of Bud or Bud light, 5 bottles for $8. As people filed into the lounge during the next couple of hours I realized that most of the Raven's fans were concentrated on the right side of the lounge, while the Niner fans were camped out on the left side.
After the long wait and pre-game hoopla we finally got to the kick off...game on. My daughter has lived in the Bay area for the past couple of years and has become a avid SF Giant and SF Niners fan. To say the least she was not too happy with her team's performance during the first half. Order up another bucket of beers, and another. After the blackout, things got real interesting, so the game turned out to be a nail biter in the end. I took the points with the Ravens, but I lost my parlay bet and all of my prop bets. All in all it was an enjoyable afternoon, but next time I am going to find a place that is smoke free...does the Orleans have a requirement that you have to be a smoker to play there......choke?
After the game we went back up to the room and chilled a while, discussing what to do for the rest of the evening.... Wine Cellar. We drove over to the Rio and settled into a couple of stools at the bar in their Wine cellar. Joel was the only one working, Lita had left earlier. Their special was a select flight of four Duckhorn wines...sold. Jen, my daughter decided to have a glass of an Oregon Pinot Noir. Duckhorn is one of my favorite California wineries so I was very satisfied with my selection: Sauvignon Blanc, a pinot noir, merlot and a cab. It was pretty much of a tie between the pinot and the cab as to which was my favorite. We wandered about the cellar after drinking our wine to inspect their inventory on display. Behind a glass case was a couple of unassuming bottles of wine which immediately got my daughter excited. Screaming Eagle....goes for over $1000 a bottle. She went into a lengthy dissertation about how this wine is so sought after. She worked as an intern at the Merry Edwards winery this past fall and really has a hands on appreciation of wine making.
My daughter said that she could go for a burger, so we ate at the All American grill at the Rio. Huge, juicy burgers....paid with Reward points. We headed back to the Orleans, sat the bar and played VP and had one last beer before calling it a day around midnight.

MONDAY Feb 4
My I-phone alarm went off at 08:30.. I have the Theme to the movie "The Magnificent Seven" set for my alarm tone....daughter, "What the Hell was that?" We decided to do a strip crawl for our last day in Vegas. We drove down and parked in the Palazzo garage and had a very nice breakfast at the Grand Lux cafe. My daughter really like the food and decor. Our waitress was funny and talkative and took good care of us. Great way to start out the day. Jen spied a Star Trek slot, so she just had to sit down and play. She remembered her password and was soon blasting those nasty Klingons. She played for quite a long time before cashing out with a $15 profit. My turn. Good luck seems to be following me around wherever I go this trip...hit a bonus round and kept racking up the medals and points. When the star dust settled I was promoted to a full Commander and cashed out over a $100 to the good.

We stopped into the CR and picked up dollar Michelobs and continued heading south. We passed Bill's to find that the doors were closed and locked...so sad. We crossed over LV Blvd and checked out the Chinese New Year display in the conservatory...year of the snake. Next was the Cosmo to have a cocktail and play some VP at one of their bars. Our female bartender made each of us a very tasty cocktail. Jen had a regular gin martini(the bartender used Hendrick's gin) and I had a side car which the bartender made using Hennessey cognac. First rate libations, and since we were playing VP at the bar, there was no charge...take that Steve Wynn! I played JOB (8/5) at the dollar level and kept hitting straights and full houses and then a 4OAK...cashed out with another $100 profit...this is a good day.

We stopped into the Monte Carlo Pub and had a couple of microbrews before heading over to the MGM to play the Sigma Derby. We each were able to get a seat and starting dumping our quarters into the machine. Three glasses of champagne later my daughter was feeling no pain and we hit a long shot at 113 to 1, so I actually made $13 playing the derby. The machine at the cashiers cage was broken so they had to count out the quarters by hand...had to wait for over ten minutes to get my money, which was irritating, but really pissed my daughter off. She has not had good experiences at MGM (found a rubber band in her food at one of their sit down restaurants a couple of years ago and got sick). I practically had to pick her up to get her away from the cashier's cage while she was expressing her displeasure about the lack customer service.

Jen wanted to see a topless show on the strip, so after discussing her options for shows, decided to see Peepshow. She had some type of social media coupon; so using her I phone she reserved a very good seat for only $62. We walked down to the PHo and picked up her seat...she got a great deal. We walked back to the Palazzo and picked up the car and drove her back to the PHo to drop her off for her show as I had to go back and pack and head for the airport for my red-eye flight. We said our goodbyes, told her to be careful in Sin City and then drove off.
I packed my suitcase and deposited in the car and still had 30 minutes before I had to head for the car rental center. I sat down at a slot and starting playing. About 5 minutes later some dude sits down next to me and starts in with a story about how he needs help with cab fare, blah, blah, blah. Without looking at him I pulled out my players card, and hit the cash out button. I got up from my chair and started to walk away, turned my head & told him to get lost..creep. It's been a long couple of days and I am about gambled out. I headed for the car rental facility a little early. When I dropped the car off, the clerk wanted to see my rental agreement...not good. She pointed out a scrape on the right front bumper and started to make a big deal out of it...I wasn't having any of the B.S. "where's your supervisor?" He was more reasonable to talk to about this. He asked me if I had valeted the car while in Vegas, which I told him I had done so several times over the course of my stay and that's probably where the scrape happened. The damage was cosmetic, paint damage only. He said it was a borderline damage claim and he would have to check to see if they could do something. They would contact me later if they were gong to file a claim. Not happy, but there was a scrape that wasn't there when I picked up the car.
Check in at the airport was quick and the flight back to MSP was okay for the most part. We hit some significant turbulence over the Denver area but otherwise I was able to grab a little sleep during the flight. The guy next to me, about 6' 2" was quite uncomfortable in his seat. His knees were pressed up against the back of the seat in front of him. We had a smooth landing with the temps in the teens and several inches of new snow on the ground with more on the way. I had fun scrapping the snow and ice off of my car and the drive home was white knuckle time on the steering wheel. I saw about half a dozen cars and pickup trucks in the median on the way home. Speeds were 25-30 MPH for some stretches. I arrived home about 08:30, shoveled out my driveway to get the car into the garage and out of the weather. Another Vegas trip is history.

EPILOGUE
Gambling wise this was a very enjoyable trip. After paying my expenses, I came back with $800 more than I left with. The gambling highlight obviously was hitting my first Royal. My daughter did hit a nice $285 jackpot at some point during our strip crawl, so she pretty much left even or a little ahead. We talked a lot about how she is doing in California and about her upcoming play next month. The weather was an excellent reprieve from the drab Minnesota winter...nice to have the warm sunshine on my face for a couple of days....or was that the neon lights from the casinos? The Flame at the El Cortez offers a very nice dining experience at a reasonable price; and if you use the LVA coupon, it's a real bargain. Really going to miss the cheap gambling that Bill's afforded me. I guess that leaves only Casino Royale on the strip for low rolling. My daughter flew home the next morning and texted me, thanking me for the great trip. She said that I was right about PeepShow..short on plot, but lots of skin.

This was my 1st time using Spirit Airlines and for the most part it was a positive one. They do charge extra for everything, but if you do your homework and take time to read what they charge for on their website you can navigate thru them without getting hit to badly with the extras. They do charge for a carry on bag as well as for a checked bag. If you pay for the bags when you book your fare, the charge is a lot less. If you want to select your seat, you will be charged, food and drinks(even water)...you will have to pay for. Their weight restrictions on their baggage is 40 pounds per bag; not the industry standard 50. My experience with check in both ways went without a hitch...counter people were friendly and helpful; so were the flight attendants. Flights were on time each way. The real problem I had was the seats. The rows are close together so there is not much leg room. If you are about 5'10' or taller, you are going to find the seating is confining. Your knees will be touching the seat in front of you. The seats are also very uncomfortable. My hip started to hurt about midway during each flight...kept having to change positions to remain somewhat comfortable, but that was difficult. Glad it was only a 3 hour flight. They sent me an e-mail 24 hrs before my flights so that I could print out my boarding pass. That's the way to go with this airline. Prepay for your luggage(checked or carryon) and have your boarding pass printed out ahead of time. I printed by pass at the business center at the Orleans for a buck. I saved myself about $150 on my airfare even with the added fees. I have read on other travel sites that if your flight is delayed or canceled, that the level of service from this airline is lacking in comparison to other airlines. For now, I probably will use them again for a Vegas flight, if I am going solo. The cheap fares are alluring.
I have my next trip already planned out before I even left for this one. St Patrick's Day in Vegas. My daughter is performing in a play in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico next month with the Fusion Theater in Albuquerque. They are performing at the KiMo theater in Albuquerque, which is downtown. I am flying out on Thursday March 14th to see her perform. She has a major part in the play, so she is pretty pumped. On Sunday, the 17th, I fly out, make a connecting flight in Salt Lake and land in Vegas 2 pm. MadMan Mike as gotten the green light for the trip. We each have 3 comped days at the Golden Gate with some free play and food comp, so we are making it a downtown trip for the most part. We love to play craps and BJ at the Gate and you can't beat the pancakes at Dupars. Fingers Freddie might come out with us, so this could be an interesting trip.

I received a letter in the mail from Enterprise; they are filing a damage claim for my car rental...weasels. I have a premium car insurance policy with American Express. I pay a fee of $25 for each car rental...doesn't matter how many days that I rent the car, and the car is supposed to be totally covered; even for premium of luxury cars. I contacted them and the American Express agent was very helpful. I gave them all the information, and they said that they will take it from there. I have been renting cars for years and this is the first time I have had a damage claim filed against me. Hope American Express comes through for me.
Well, it's a wrap....I took a lot of photos with my new camera and if I can figure out how to download them to my computer I will try and post them as a supplement to my trip report. Thanks for reading...stay tuned for my March trip...if Fingers is on board, I should have some interesting stories to relate.
