Harrah's $50 sandwich upgrade a bust (DELUXE KING ROOMS ARE NOT UPGRADE)

Arrived at Harrah's 11/17/15 around 5:30 p.m. and there was a short line but could not chose which desk agent to go to. We got a middle aged timid lady. I explained we were in Las Vegas to celebrate my 50th birthday and also the reunion with my high school sweetheart and first love after being a part for 30 years and it was her first time ever to Las Vegas hoping to get a complimentary Suite upgrade from basic Carnival tower room. I placed a $50 between drivers license and credit card and handed to the desk agent and she promptly handed back the $50 bill and exclaimed "lets see if I can make you happy first". (Red flag immediately) She typed into her computer for a minute and then walked over to whom I would assume was a supervisor on duty, standing by her own computer behind all the agents and the 2 conversed and the supervisor logged into her computer and again I will assume to see if I had any ACTION with Total Rewards or Harrah's. ( I had ZERO ACTION) After a couple minutes our desk agent came back and started typing again and quietly said "its $75 a night to upgrade to a suite". There was a pause then she said she could offer a SMALLER deluxe king room in the Mardi Gras tower complimentary. The extra ammenities were, Pillow Top mattresses, balcony, large plasma TV, TV in the bathroom, remodeled granite bathrooms. We took the upgrade Deluxe King and it was small and just like renting a Best Western room I guess. The Balcony is literally 2 wide so basically we could open the sliding glass door but nowhere to step out. Directly below the balcony is the food court exhaust fans which smelled so bad with all the mixed smells that we had to leave the balcony door shut. I didn't come to Las Vegas to watch TV so those made no difference to me. Hind sight I should have taken the $75 a night upgrade as I only spent $19 a night for 4 nights and of course I had to pay the Resort FEES $28 per night as well. The room was clean and maid service was great, it was just a plain smaller the average room. ***Some people I see are writing this room as an upgrade for the $20 sandwich trick, but I disagree completely. I didn't lose my $50 so I guess I was out nothing but disappointted with results. Looks like lots of upgrades that have been written about are when they get this Deluxe King room. ITS NOT AN UPGRADE PEOPLE> ITS no big deal and the basic room is probably bigger.
$28 for a per night "resort fee??? Don't take this personally, but anyone willingly paying $28/ night resort fee must have lost their mind.
"Deluxe" is hotel speak for regular basic room.

BTW, $50 is way too much of a tip. Twenty is plenty no matter how much of an upgrade you hope for. Kudos to that lady for not taking your $50. And with her supervisor standing close by, she may not have been able to take any tip.

I hope you and your sweetheart had a wonderful time anyway. You did good for what you paid. Be glad you saved that $75 a night.

In part you answered your own question. Going for a suite upgrade with no visible action rarely occurs without liberal upgrade practice and/or an ample supply of that room type. Not saying it can't happen, just saying it won't happen often, especially at a busy hotel.

Good Luck!

I agree, twenty is plenty for something that takes little to no effort.
