Hit ‘em All Nevada – Day 8
Today is going to require a plan. After taking care of the morning usual and then writing and sending in the yesterday’s journal, I sat down with my American Casino Guide (ACG) and began making a list of the casinos I hope to hit without any unnecessary crisscrossing across the valley. Some of these casinos also accept ACG coupons; so hopefully, a couple of those will be winners.
Some quick questions from the Boards: Badgerman corrected me as I mis-titled the book by Barry Meadows, which is titled BLACKHACK AUTUMN. Thanks. Also BobOrme, great pic of the chip from the Regency…no doubt they at one time had table games. Good collectable. Sarge, thanks for the correction and directions for Wendover and Montego Bay. I’ve made a copy and will bring it up when I get there. Also, in Laughlin you can still play live poker at Harrahs, the Riverside, the Aquarius, the Colorado Belle, and the Avi. Skim9999 Yes, the roads are still a mess on Casino Dr in Laughlin and won’t be finished until November. When I need to get to Harrahs, I bypass the main road and take the back one behind the Tropicana.
Today has gotten off to a late start, and I didn’t get out of Bally’s until almost noon. I went through the coupons/match plays that I have and mapped out my trip, which is only going to be about six casinos, but they’re all spread apart. The first stop is right down the street on Flamingo called the Tuscany. My son and I stayed when they first converted from an apartment complex to a hotel and casino. The rooms are all converted apartments, so they’re all suites with kitchens. I still have the freebie key chain medallion on my keys today. I played blackjack and the day has gotten off to a good start with a win.
Down the street also on Flamingo is Terribles. They took over what used to be the dump known as the Continental. They remodeled and a few years ago expanded. If you ever stay, make sure you’re in the new expansion as the rooms are surprisingly nice here for the price. I used to always get free rooms here, but though I still have a slew of points on my card, I don’t get offers here anymore except for the usual $29 a night and $49 for weekends. I used my first match play coupon here and lost. I like the café here, which is upstairs and decided to have lunch. I had the chicken fried steak, which was the size of the plate. I didn’t eat it all and paid using my points.
I next took Las Vegas Blvd north past downtown, past the Neon Museum, past Cashman Field to get to Jerry’s Nugget. This place goes way, way back. It’s your typical “locals” joint. The coupon I had was a match play for only $5, but when I signed up for their slot club, she gave me another $5 coupon for blackjack. The first one I used playing roulette, black. I won for a ten dollar profit. I used the second one at blackjack, which I lost. So, I’m up $5 for this little stop.
The next place was a long way north on the way to Nellis Air Force Base called the Bighorn, which also has a sister property across from Sam’s Town called the Longhorn that I will visit in the next couple of days. I played my ten dollar match play at blackjack, and my 17 lost to the dealers 18. I know this is going typical of the summer’s trip: drive forever, get out of the car, take a picture, find my way inside to a table, make the bet, lose or win the bet and drive away. But when I lose the bet, it’s just leaves a bit of a more bitter taste.
I drive back to Las Vegas Blvd where I find the Silver Nugget. This is a place that can only be best described as a…well…dump. There’s a bowling alley attached to it. In order to use the ten dollar match play, I had to join the slot club, which I did and then sat down at a blackjack table with three other people. Then something classic happened. I dealer had a 2 card up. Everyone stayed except one dude who had 15. He wavered not sure what to do. He chose to take a card, the dealer asked him again, and he signaled for another card, which turned out to be a king where he busted. The dealer turned over a ten, then hit her twelve with an 8. This moron cost the entire table their bet and me with my match play—twenty bucks—classic!
It took me a couple of wrong turns but I finally found a casino called The Lucky Club. This is a relatively new place, but it looks like it was put together “on the cheap.” Again, I was required to sign up for the slot club in order to use the match play coupon. I finally did, put my ten bucks on blackjack (they only had blackjack), and I lost again with a 17 versus the dealer’s 18—ah!
It was 3:30 and I wanted to get back to Bally’s as I was going to meet a fellow LVA member, Diane (dbeuler) who has been in Vegas since July 4. We decide to meet at the foot of the escalators at Planet Hollywood and then go to the diamond lounge there to visit and chat. We have a wonderful talk for a couple of hours and shared some stories over a couple of beers. It’s so nice to put faces to the names. Diane’s is a regular reader and poster, so you’ll no doubt read her trip report as well after she returns home.
Today was a short day and that’s why the short report. I got a late start and made it an early return. Tomorrow I pack again and this time I DO check into Sam’s Town where I’ll go after all those casinos in the eastern part of Henderson I missed a couple of days ago.
