Laughlin, Rain, Zero Big Wins

Background: Bobby 75 years old (BW) Martie 60 years old (MJ)are making our 6th trip to Laughlin and our first trip on Sun Country Airlines. This is our first gambling trip of 2016. The total price for the trip was a good deal at $129. but from Austin to Shreveport to Laughlin was 4 1/2 hours instead of 2 1/2 hours, the return trip was Laughlin to Austin to Shreveport, so our leg was 2 hours and 15 minutes, much better. The flight to Laughlin was choppy and in fog or clouds most of the flight, the seats were typical small and very little leg room (seats 5E and 5F both ways) but enjoyed nice snacks and one free alcoholic beverage each way.

Around Noon we took a taxi to the airport with our favorite driver Marilyn, while waiting to check in we shared a sausage kolache, we were informed by email that check in would be at Allegiant Airlines as we were lining up at the 2 hour check in time we were informed that we were to check in at Sun Country, so 80 to 90 senior citizens were carrying their luggage several hundred yards to the Sun Country desk, after the short journey, check in and security check went smoothly. We had a couple of beers and purchased a sandwich & chips for our in flight meal. While having our beers at the Saxon Pub, we chatted with a lady from South Austin 78704 and found we knew some of her relatives. We are Southies 78704 and 78745. The flight was originally scheduled to depart at 2:30 pm then rescheduled to 3:00 pm and actually was wheels up at 3:20 p.m. after a short hop of 45 minutes we landed in Shreveport to pick up 50ish people then onward thru the fog and rain to Laughlin. We landed at 8:00 pm Austin time (the time at the airport in Arizona and Laughlin is one hour difference??). We then took a bus to Harrahs and received our room keys and players cards. After a quick trip to the room (11009), it was okay but nothing special, we went down to the casino for booze and gambling, mostly at the Chance Bar. MJ was welcomed by a female Casino Host, Franco the bartender at the Chance Bar did a good job of quenching our thirsts . MJ hit 4 2s on .50 DD, 4 7s on $1 DD, BW hit 4 Ks twice on .25 DD. We had no major hits on slots, both down but within budget for the day, We were up in our room by midnight Laughlin time. Tired but smiling.

Tuesday, January 5, 2016

We were up at 8:15 am local time and ordered a pot of coffee and breakfast sandwiches from room service, we talked to our daughter and son-in-law and granddaughters in Houston, and were out of the room at 11:00 am for our usual Bloody Marys at Chance Bar. We were going to gamble off site but stayed at Harrahs. MJ hit 4 2s .50, BW hit 4 9x .25 DD. No major hits on slots, overall bad day gambling. We shared a BLT in Hotel Café. Both food and service were good. We were back in the room by 8 pm for TV and sleep.

Wednesday, January 6, 2016

We were up at 6:30 am local time, we ordered coffee and had breakfast bars in the room. We were out of the room by 10 am for Bloody Marys at Chance Bar. We took a taxi to Aquarius for gambling and drinks, drinks were good the gambling not so good. We had a nice meal of steak and shrimp with good service at Outback.

Every trip BW seems to find himself in some kind of a goofy situation and today is the day. As we were walking around the Aquarius, MJ spots a slot machine she has been looking for, so she turns on a dime and briskly walks toward the machine thru a video poker area. As BW attempts to follow her his right foot clips a chair and he stumbles and almost falls. His fall is broken by his grabbing on to a walker belonging to a surprised senior citizen who is playing video poker in the area. As 4 or 5 other senior citizens stare at him in disbelief, he grins, mumbles an apology and scurries off as fast as his 75 year old skinny legs will go. MJ stares at him and says where have you been?????. We taxied back to Harrahs had some drinks and gambled. MJ hit 4 4s $1 DD, 4 Aces $1 DD 4 9s $1 DD. BW hit 1 senior walker.

We returned to our room a 7 pm local time and upon returning to the room we noticed that the hot water in the bathroom sink was running. We attempted to turn it off however it would not turn off. We called maintenance and 30 minutes and 3 maintenance workers later all is well.

Last full day is always a sad day. We were up at 7 am had our coffee and breakfast bars in the room. We were out of the room by 10 am and down for Bloody Marys at Chance Bar. Our intent was to go to the Riverside but rain and dreary weather kept us at Harrahs. We made bets for BW, son-in-law, and a friend, the results were not good. Total money bet $600.00 total win was $300.00.

We met a nice couple at Chance Bar, Russell and Liz who were originally from South Dakota but now living at Lake Havasu. BW hit 4 Ks .25 DD. We were back in the room by 8 pm.

Friday, January8, 2016

We had to get up at 4 am to pack as baggage pull was at 5:30 am. We took the bus to the airport and were wheels up at 8:45 am. We arrived in Austin at 1:15 pm and were picked up by Marilyn our taxi driver then home sweet home at 2:30 pm.

Thoughts for the trip:

*Won't do trips in future that are not a direct flight.
*Laughlin quiet and relaxing.
*Bad weather, rain and fog.
*Bartenders, Franco, Sandy, Gary & Andrew were great, all drink service was great.
*At least three people commented on BW's Texas drawl, MJ says the more BW drinks the more the drawl.
*Gambling not good, used our total budget saw only two hand pays.
*Time difference between airport and hotel strange.
*Enjoyed trip except for the gambling.
*Next trip Feb. 28 to March 5 in Downtown Vegas. Staying at the D.

Thanks BW for the report and sounds like you both had a nice time since I see that Team White had some hits that at least enabled you both to keep playing! Sorry that the weather didn't cooperate which did not enable you to do some of what you wanted.

As for the time difference issue that you mentioned, Arizona is actually in the Mountain Time Zone (which during Standard Time is 1 hour ahead of Nevada -- and so during Standard Time, 2PM in Nevada is 3PM in Arizona). And also, at least as far as I know, Arizona does not follow Daylight Saving Time and so during Daylight Saving Time, the time in Nevada and Arizona is the same.

Thanks for the trip report.
I always enjoy your adventures although regret that you didn't come home with a fatter wallet.
There is always next time.....

Regards,

Paul
Thanks for the report, Bobby! Funny story about tripping and a walker breaking your fall!
Sorry no luck gambling, I was in Vegas six nights recently and didn't have much luck there either : (

Fun trip report! Thanks for sharing. NV and AZ are in separate time zones. During daylight savings time, we're the same as CA and NV. The rest of the year, we're one hour later. It sometimes gets confusing because cell phones switch back and forth between the time zones.
Very enjoyable TR, BW!

I'm surprised (and jealous-LOL) that Sun Country gave you freebie drinks on the return flight. We do Little Rock to Biloxi (Beau Rivage) via Sun Country charter. We get free drinks on the way to Biloxi, but no hard stuff on the way back, just a soft drink. I figure they don't want to be blamed for anyone being DUI driving home from the airport. Added to that is the fact that the flight takes barely an hour, and there is barely enough time for them to do one drink pass anyway. But, the fast flight is the trade off-we can get to drinking right away at the Beau!

BTW, the SC planes have been OK, but the last one was new, nicer seats. But that can't be counted on, of course.

Glad you had fun despite not winning a fortune. That's the usual for me. You had good company and fun bartenders and all that, which adds a lot to a trip.

Thanks for reporting!

Thanks RecVPPlayer, Paul , Gail , Lisa , & Candy for your kind comments and advises. Martie & I enjoy all our trips particularly Vegas, & I enjoy writing and reading Trip Reports.
