Laughlin trip

Laughlin isn't everyone's cup of tea, but free flight (Sun Country) and four nights calls to me.  I'll just hit some highlights.  Friend Connie and I did the trip. Harrah's, BTW.

1.  Food #1.  We already had an offer from our Hosts to treat us to dinner in the Range one night.  But I also had a left over Diamond $100 Celebration Dinner expiring at end of January, so we did that at the Range first.  I ordered a "one lobster tail."  Came with salad and "vegetable medley."   Took a chance on a lemon drop martini.  Lobster tail was really good.  Salad OK.  Vegetable medley, well...  The lemon drop was surprisingly up to my standards!  Connie ordered the Porterhouse steak, same sides.  The steak was awful, we both didn't go beyond the first bite.  Not recognizable as any kind of good steak.  Should have sent it back, but Connie doesn't roll that way.  We told the person who cleared our table, he said he would tell the chef.

2. Food #2.  Still, we thought that meal was a good rehearsal for dinner the next night.  No Porterhouse for sure!  I had seen the king crab legs on our way in the night before, already slit down the middle, easy to eat, so that would be my choice for dinner with our Hosts.  Connie liked her bite of my lobster tail, so she would order that.  I got another lemon drop.  Connie and I shared lobster tails and crab legs, all good.  My Host had the "special" with steak medallions, she said was excellent.  I forget what Connie's Host had but she liked it.

3. Ate one meal at Beach Cafe, I had breakfast sandwich, Connie had BLT.  Both very acceptable, cheap, nice staff.  Last meal ate at Buffet.  I believe the Buffet has gone down.   Not great the last time, less this time.  Best bet:  Ice cream.

4.  Gambling.  I did well enough at slots two of the three full days, awful one of the days.  Good hit at Konami "Little Devil" ($800...exquisitely lucky).  Connie hit good at Konami "Lovely Butterfly" where the bonus round opens to hopefully fill in puzzle pieces to make one of the images, a Kitty being the highest.  Connie hit that several times.  She still has the horseshoe up her butt.  Her best hit was at the lone $1 Blazing 7s machine in the non-smoking section.  Hit the top for $1500.

5. My best.  My best single hit (and most fun) was scoring $1700 in a session of High Card Flush.  Caught some 4 and 5 card flushes and straight flushes.  Love that game, but only in Laughlin where they deal to every spot regardless of the number of players.   Also have $5 ante, sometimes raised to $10 when busy but one night they even lowered it back to $5!  Of course it costs more if you bet the flush spot and the straight flush spot (which is how you make money), and of course if you have a hand to raise on.  Best thing is no W2-G for table play.  Love that game at Laughlin, much fun especially with a full or nearly full table.  Another session cashed in with $200 profit after a lot of hours and nearly going all the way down.   I have sworn off of it in Las Vegas Strip (Bellagio and  Wynn) as they don't deal to every spot and for some reason that is not player-helpful.   Not to mention their lowest is $15 ante.  Always lost in Vegas and never saw anyone win on it.  Hope they keep it the way it is in Laughlin.

6. Flight out was late leaving, and flight back was 2 hours late leaving due to bad weather everywhere else, pilot shortage, etc.  But finally made it home with almost all my money intact for the next one!

Thanks for reading.

Surviving intact when playing high-house-EV table games and slots is an accomplishment indeed. Harrah's Laughlin is, like the rest of Laughlin, more downscale than Vegas. Table limits are lower and action that gets you rated as 'pocket lint" in Vegas actually gets you noticed in Laughlin. My personal contrast is that playing VP at the Strat or AZ Chuckie's in Vegas has never gotten me a complimentary Q-tip but got me oodles of room offers at the Aquarius in Laughlin--and the same company owns all of those properties.

I read some time ago that the average age of Laughlin visitors is 70, and I think that's too low an estimate. The food in Laughlin casinos is surprisingly bad and not particularly cheap. I had the worst two buffets I've ever eaten in Laughlin (Regency and Edgewater, I think--I've tried to blot the memories from my mind). I think the priority in dish selection there is food that can be easily gummed.

There's almost no playable VP in Laughlin and while there's poker, it's just nine almost-dead old guys sitting hunched around a table, throwing away everything but suited Aces. So it's not my cup of Texas Tea, but it does have one overriding virtue--it's an escape hatch when Vegas is sold out! I've been in Vegas for extended periods and found out that a room on Friday night was $849 plus tax and resort fee because the annual Nun Beating Festival was in town, but I could scoot down to the Aquarius for $59.

Oh, and this time of year, the weather is quite nice, as opposed to hell on earth from April to November.

Suited aces- cute.

Good TR, have not been to Laughlin in years, yes it is for us old folks but that is cool, not Vegas but is a free fix and very relaxinng, again Thanks.

One of my biggest scores ever came at the Pioneer Club in Laughlin.     That was a great night.

i always tell people Laughlin is good for a night or two tops.    The Aquarius used to include free breakfast in their diner with your  booked room.   That. was a good deal.

Last time I was there they had a skunk living under the riverwalk in the drainpipe.    He liked to come out at night and say hi.   People gave him a lot of space. ;).    I think there’s a YouTube video of him floating around out there

Kevin--Pocket lint....LOL!  Great name for a tier.

Thanks, Bobby.  I feel right at home with all the old foggies.

PJ and Dave, love those videos.  See, Laughlin isn't just for gambling anymore.  Lots of wildlife education I can regale the folks at home with.

Truly a great escape.  We get a cookie/trail mix basket in the room.  And good TV, better than in Vegas.  AXS channel, one movie channel without commercials, Live PD.  What's not to love?  LOL.

If they don't have HGTV, we could never go.  It's hard enough to get my wife to go to Gold Strike for a night since no HGTV, so going for a few nights to Laughlin would be out of the question for us Pocket Linters.

I was about to ask what Live PD was, but I Googled it, and now I know.

It sounds like the old show whose name I forget, but whose theme song I remember, "Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?" The Vegas segments were the best. Is Live PD the same as that show?

Oh yeah, "Cops." The Alzheimers fades in and out.

On another subject, I think Laughlin is one of those places highly sought after fugitives go when on the lam. Unlike Vegas, it's sort of nowhere, if you know what I mean, and you can be anonymous yet still live comfortably for not much money. A famous fugitive was tracked down living there about 10-15 years ago. It was front page news. I can't recall who it was. Alzheimers, again. j/k ... I hope.
