Mesquite 7/24/11-The Sad Story of Degeneracy

I usually don't write TR's for the short day trips I make to Mesquite; my "local" casino town about 1 1/2 hrs south of where I live. First, I don't go very often anymore.Maybe 4 times as year. Second, Mesquite doesn't have the variety of activities that LV does. The last report I wrote was done because I WON!!! Everything I touched was golden! Well, this isn't one of THOSE reports. THIS report is sad, sad, sad.I decided to take a day trip as a getaway from work and to just be by myself amongst strangers for one day. I also had an urge to play Bingo. After reading Jon's report, I decided the Eureka was the place to go. It's nice and I've won there. Thought I'd have bkfst first at their nice coffee shop before Bingo.Instead, I stopped by a Buffalo slot and won a little/lost a lot...cruised a couple of others...went to Bingo...(lost; almost won $150 but called "bingo" too late after the caller started to call the next number by the time I found my bingo on my last card.)So, between Bingo sessions (which I lost,) and playing slots (which I lost any I won; you know, "degenerate mode,") I ate a crappy $1 hot dog and had sodas and a pack of Famous Amous cookies at Bingo.Feeling like the ultimate loser, I went across the street to the Virgin River to do my FSP and try the Buffalo machines there. Won a little/lost a lot. Did get 4 deuces on a nickle STP w/o a multiplier. Finally decided to drive home as it was getting late. Picked up a crappy Hostess fruit pie and bottled water while getting gas so I would have a sugar buzz for the drive home. Nothing better than eating sugar covered cardboard (unlike strawberry or cherry Pop Tarts, which I actually love) on the drive of shame home.Texted the kid that I was on the road (he's so cute; he's 15 and texted back "yay!")and made it home safely but tired. Had 3 pt visits scheduled for this afternoon but 1 cancelled; so, moved the other 2 to other days to save gas and give me a recovery day! One good thing, I got the losin' outta my system as we're leaving Thurs after my work mtgs for 4 free nights at the Ho to meet up w/friends.Can only get better as I won't be gambling as much since I won't be alone. Decided I've gotta stay away from Mesquite when alone. I just go on tilt too much! Next Mesquite trip is an over-nighter for a Bunco tourney w/mom (I've never played but she'll teach me) and her Bunco league friends/Red Hat Society pals.Woohoo!!!
Thanks for reading my sad, shamefule tale

sounds like a day out/ what's wrong with that?

It's not like you were at the ATM 3 times... let up a little on yourself- you are being too harsh, no? ... it's your entertainment... you are allowed.
You just wanted to have fun, and it's not fun to lose at everything you touch. We've all had those days....too many of them. And many times they start badly, then turn around. This one didn't....

I know how you feel, when you just want to be alone and play, happens to me too. Hang in there....we're all degenerates at one time or another.

That's a bummer finding your # too late for bingo. It amazes me that some people where I went to bingo with my Mom don't even mark their cards for a single bingo. It would have all been better if you won. It is amazing that sometimes you win on everything and next time can't win for tryin. That's why we keep going back lol! I feel the same way sometimes lol! (why are we doing this? then I try again, and all is well)

Enjoy you trip with your friends. Time heals all! Go get that bunko with the Red Hat Society! Just have fun! It should make an interesting TR! Didn't know they had bunko turnaments!

Thanks Tracy for your report! Sorry to read about your losing -- especially when you missed the Bingo by being just slightly too late!

As for casino play, can you restrict your play to only the best returning VP machines and keep that overall return to at the very least 99.1% or more?

If so, you at least can help yourself to possibly cut down on your losses.

It can be extremely easy to go on tilt and into degeneracy but if people can restrain their play to only the best stuff played in the best way, then you can at the very least hopefully increase the amount of your playtime (if nothing else)!

Take care and I wish you a much better trip (to LV) with your friends in August!

Thanx, all. Yeah, I know it was a day out but I like to have better self control. I kept saying, "okay, now is the time to leave" but then I'd get a bonus, make a little $$$, and then think "well, maybe a little longer..."As for better return percentages, I'm a slot whore and just really enjoy the visuals, music, bonuses. I play some VP too for fun, not enough to affect my long-term losses though. WILL be having a great time w/friends and my son. That will definitely make me feel better as well. Thanks for making me feel better

I do very well know that it can be hard to get up and leave machines, but if Players really want to do what is best for them and their finances (while in a casino), they really just need to force themselves to have the Discipline to get up and leave the machine when they have lost or won (and then guaranteed themselves) a reasonable and pre-determined amount of money so that they can do what they can to help themselves to cut down on their potential losses.

I say this since depending on what is being played (especially if it is Slots more than Video Poker), it can easily become more likely for the Player to lose money than to win it. And the thing with Players playing on Slot machines is that although they certainly can be "fun," they unfortunately usually have a higher drainage factor as opposed to playing on Video Poker machines (and so it can quickly become a lot more costly when playing Slot Machines as opposed to playing Video Poker).

And so therefore, by playing slot machines, players can increase their chances of having a very uphill battle on their hands to face in order to win and/or be able to last for a while as opposed to possibly (depending on the pay schedule offered and the volatility rate attached to the game) having a smoother ride and a better chance of either winning or losing less (at least percentage-wise) with Video Poker as opposed to playing on the slot machines.

And, as I'm thinking about it now, it is a whole lot easier to get into a "degeneracy" mode when playing a game where not much if any real thinking is involved (with a slot machine as opposed to playing Video Poker). I know that doing something where you don't have to think much can be fun and relaxing, but it can be a lot easier to lose control that way.

This all really can go back to the concept (and the question that Players really need to ask themselves) of how badly do you want to win and what are you willing to do to help you achieve that goal?

Another thing that I would do if I were in this position is, if it is possible, and if the Slot Machine has the option (I know that at least many Video Poker machines do have this option), it is better for the Player to get the machine to list for them the Dollar And Cents amount that they have instead of the amount of Credits that they are playing with which then forces the player into then having to calculate it out in order to convert them back into the Dollars and Cents amount of what they have.

At least for me doing that works good because Credits can be just numbers that don't necessarily at least immediately have some kind of significant meaning.
So for example, with Video Poker, I would much rather see that I have $58.75 (in Dollars and Cents) than to see that I have 235 Credits on a Quarter VP machine. This better helps me to control the situation that I'm in instead of just seeing a number of Credits.

Another thing that can be done to help keep at least some people in line is to have them equate the money that's in front of them (on the machine) to something physical that they could have (or buy).

And another thing that Players can do to possibly help them control themselves is to go to the American Casino Guide and look at the return rate ranges that the different Slot Machines can offer and then at least try to get themselves to only play the games which offer the higher return percentages. So for example, I think that in the book Steve Bourie lists that based on the information that he has gotten from the listings that the machine manufacturers have put out, that the base return rate for "Wizard Of Oz" machines is in the 86% range! That's pretty low and that can therefore end up causing a significant drain on the Player's limited resources of money.

There is definitely some point in time where if the machine has a Progressive Jackpot, that it can actually possibly become a positive (returning percentage-wise) play, but the real question that we need to ask is do we know when that point actually is (since that can be figured out with Video Poker)?

Players also have to realize that nobody is putting a gun to the Player's head to force him/her to continue to sit at any machine. The Player can leave the machine/casino at any time and know that this is their money that they are dealing with and that they should not be concerned with what they think that others might think of them for leaving.
When it comes to casino play, Players need to know that each of us really are islands unto ourselves and so therefore, you should only be concerned about you (and you alone) and how much money you have.

I definitely wish you all the best with this! Take care!

I very seldom post here, but read all the trip reports as well as other forums. My opinion will probably be the opposite of 98% of the people on this board, but I feel that there is a bias against anybody who doesn't particularly like to play video poker. I live within 55 minutes of 5 different "riverboats/casinos" and visit all of them frequently. Probably average 3-4 times per week. I play penny slots 95% of the time and have won jackpots from $3000 to $6000 at least 10 times this year. That is not even counting all the wins under $1200.

My husband on the other hand, plays primarily VP and almost always comes out with a loss at the end of the month. He has won $2000 and up on a few occasions but has won a whole lot more money on slot machines. You can try to convince yourself that perfect play, good pay tables, etc. make all the difference in the world, but it still comes down to plain old LUCK!!

Just last night at Ameristar in East Chicago, we each started the night with $500. He played all of his on VP while I played penny slots. I started with $50 on a "Wicked WinningWays" & cashed that one out for $261.00. I then moved over to a Buffalo and hit that one for an additional $340. On the opposite side of the carousel was a "Wild Stallion" that netted me another $125.00. To the right of that was another "Buffalo" that after numerous free spins netted another $844.00.

I then met up with my husband who had already LOST his $500 playing VP!

I graciously gave him $400 so he could continue to have fun. We went to the buffet and after that decided to spend 30 more minutes in the casino before heading home. He went back to playing VP and I played a "Popeye" slot machine which hit the bonus round for $202.00. I then went over to a bank of machines that I had never played. The max bet was only $2 so I wasn't expecting much as I usually bet in the $3-$5 per spin range. Within 5 minutes I had won $1012.00 on ONE SPIN .

My husband walked up while the machine was running up the credits & just shook his head.

Oh yeah, he had lost another $100 on VP.

Last night was not anything out of the ordinary for me when playing penny slots. I almost always go home with more than I brought with me. There is a trick to playing them but you can make money.

I realize that I wasn't "using any thought processes" (or just basically sitting on my a**) while I was playing, but which one of us was the dummy??

Hope no one is offended by my rant, but the person who started this trip report sounded like someone who was just trying to have some fun and the "stars were just not in alignment" for him to win on that particular day. Since Lady Luck is the primary reason anybody wins big when gambling, he doesn't need to feel any shame for going home in the loss column.

I have nothing against people playing VP, but it is hard to get excited about betting $5 and then winning that $5 back. The next hand you bet the same $5 and maybe win $15. Sorry, but I find that to be BORING!

Oh well, to each his own!
Again, thanks for your replies. I'm not really ashamed about losing as I was upset that I kept playing even when I knew that I was: a.not saving my winnings and, therfore, losing (I usually TITO if I double or get a good bonus) b.playing even when I was tired and should have gone home earlier. To me, it's a loss of my usual control that I regretted. I guess a lot of us do this occasionally and I'm glad it is more rare than common for me.AND, I didn't even have alcohol!!! Well, got it out of my system, I hope, and my LV trip will be great! And, yep, I probably should play some more EV+ games but I really have fun w/those bonuses
