Mesquite- is it worth it (still)?

Hi there, another trip to Vegas is ahead of me. I also plan to stay a couple of nights in Mesquite. (gambling, golfing, steaks) Any recommendations are highly appreciated. I see that Eureka is clearly no 1.  I think live poker is no more but good videopoker can be found, still.  Has anybody been there lately? Curious to hear from you. And thanks :) From Switzerland / Boris

Stopped there for a few hours in December. The place feels and looks deserted. It's obviously in serious decline.

The casinos at the north end of town are better in terms of games, atmosphere, and food.

I've heard that the main attraction of Mesquite is golf: courses that are carbon copies of Vegas courses but much less expensive and crowded. I've seen some pretty nice stay/play packages offered.

There was good VP in several casinos. VPFree2's info was accurate.

I feel sorry for all the people who bought houses there, thinking it was going to be some kind of boomtown. The trouble is, you use up the place pretty quick, but there's nowhere else to go.

After two days, you'll want to get the hell out of there.

Thanks for your comments, Kevin. I have exactly 2 nights booked there and will try to get some golf lessons while there. Just shoot some balls from the range you know.... Will stay at the Eureka. I read many good things about it and they have good VP. I booked directly, so let's find out if they appreciate my action and give me a break on the room rate. I am not a comp hustler, but I think I deserve it because I put in quite some action every single day.

They ought to give you some comps/deals, since anyone who blows a $5 bill there is considered a high roller. You won't get anything up front, but if you show them your action when you're checking out, they will probably give you something. You'll also get mailers later on.

Mesquite is almost as much of a furnace as Vegas (and this is looking like a record hot year), so book the earliest tee time you can. It's no fun out there after 11:00 or so.

It's very much worth the hour's drive to Zion if you have the time.

Do you have any figures in your mind? Would a 10k coin-in per day on VP qualify for room and food or just room or just half room rate? My play can go up to 15'000 dollars coin-in per day , especially on that Tuesday as it's Seniors Day and I will play there nonstop from noon on. Perhaps 1 hour of break time in between and 30 minutes or so at the pool side in the early evening....

This is nothing more than an educated guess, but based on my experiences at similar properties, 8 to 10K daily will usually get you a room comp. Room and food would probably take your maximum.

If they're smart enough to comp based on theo, it would depend on whether they know that you're playing good VP or they just lump you in with slot players. Using the 20% of theo rule, $10K of slot action should result in minus $1K in EV and therefore, $200 in comps. Covers a room easily. But if you're playing 99% VP, you're only worth $100 to them, and thus, a small room discount or a free meal.

Let us know, as the casinos change their comp policies more often than Trump changes his diapers.
