My 2011 WSOP Trip Report Day 10: The End

Tuesday July 5

The Palace Tower room at Caesars Palace, was probably the nicest one we stayed in for this trip. I did some exploring of the casino last night, and it wasn’t nearly as large as I thought it would be. Everything was spaced out and it was quite roomy. I guess the crown jewel in the Caesars Entertainment Empire is content to be a huge mall with their casino as just an afterthought.

We woke up and were on our way at about 8:00am. Our first stop was the Gold Coast to check out. I can’t comment on how the room was here because we didn’t even set foot in it! That’s a first for me.

It was time to head back out to the M casino to pick up our free hats. The people at the players’ club booth are very nice and knew about the postal strike in Canada. They ended up giving us coupons for a free breakfast buffet.

The M buffet is pretty good and we took our time. This was our last day in Las Vegas and the only thing we had planned today was the Jersey Boys show later tonight.

On the way back up Las Vegas Boulevard, we made a stop at the Silverton casino. I played some double deck blackjack with a very sweet dealer. She kept saying that a 6 was her lucky card.

“Honey, ya’ll need to be extra careful when I got a 6 up. I could have a 3, 4 or 5 underneath. I’m forced to take a card no matter what I have, and any time I take a card, I will make 20 or 21, 2 times out of 13, or 6.5 to 1.”

I don’t know if it was luck or co-incidence, but the 3 times she had a 6 up, she made a hand each time. I did manage to win $300 and cash out.

Taking the advice of my mother, I decided to buy some things to bring home before I lost all my money in one last-ditch attempt to get even. I picked up some things at the Bass Pro Shop, and another I Pod for my younger daughter at the Apple store back at the Fashion Show Mall.

We had just 1 attraction left to see on this trip, and that was the Springs Preserve. I had another reason for wanting to see this attraction. I wanted to use a coupon from the ACG. Before this trip started, I had planned to make extensive use of all the coupons in the ACG and the MRB. I didn’t know this was going to be a weeklong degenerate gambling bender that would result in all of our meals being comped. I now had a MRB and an ACG with only 3 coupons taken out of them!

A pretty cool display of how a flash flood can result in torrents of water in desert canyons.

My mother actually enjoyed this place more than I did. It was too hot to stay outside for long though so didn’t get to explore the grounds much. If I were to ever come to Las Vegas with my girls, I would definitely bring them here.

We still had comp dollars to use at the Las Vegas Hilton, so we headed there for 1 last buffet meal. While waiting in line I managed to win $285 on a Monopoly Machine, for a very little bit of revenge.

Despite eating at this buffet for several meals this trip, we were not tired of it at all. I even had some left over comp dollars to pick up some snacks and drinks for the red-eye flight we had later that night.

We drove back to the Palazzo for the show. In order to keep myself on the Palazzo’s radar, I played and lost $100 in the new “Alice in Wonderland” slot machine. That will either give Sheldon the message that I was at his property and chose not to gamble much since his offers have dried up, or it will ruin my daily average and I’ll get no more offers at all.

I really thought my mother would like Jersey Boys, but it turned out to be just another opportunity for her to take a nap. I think I liked it better the first time when I saw it in 2009 with my wife. Many of the cast members have changed.

After the show, we headed back to Caesars Palace, loaded up the car and headed to the airport. The red-eye flight is a killer, but we made it back safe, sound and poorer.

Taking final stock of my losses, I have about $4800 less than what I started with. Now, while in Las Vegas, I spent $3700 on tournament buy-ins, gifts etc. I had $2200 in my wallet when I got home. So depending on who’s doing the accounting, I either lost an awful amount of $4800, or a manageable amount of $1100.

What about my mother? Her losses were more than they were last year, but she still seemed to be in good spirits. Even now, when I call her a week after being home, she talks fondly of the trip. It really sucks that we went down so much money so fast, but that happens sometimes.

“You know, when you first asked me if I wanted to go with you again this year, I really wanted to. It was a long cold winter and I was depressed. I really enjoy coming here and seeing all the shows. I don’t think it’s a good thing for us to be gambling so much though. If we ever come again, let’s just stick to the shopping and shows. What did you pay for this trip for the two of us? $2400? We can afford to just pay that and enjoy ourselves. There’s no need to go overboard. I for one am laying off the gambling for awhile.”

So there you have it. This could be the end of the regular summer Las Vegas trips for my mom and me. I don’t have plans to play in the WSOP next year. Unless I get some incredible offers I can string together I may not be back for a while.

Thanks for reading.

Wow, Ed, thanks for that report!

If you want to come and play still and not take the chances of being hurt too badly if things go bad, you can not only restrict your play more to only higher returning games, but you could lower the denomination of your play down to about my level and maybe either give up or cut down on the other games with higher casino advantages.

You can get information about all of the games and their inherent casino advantages by going to the Wizard Of Odds website!

Well take care and thanks again for not only the hard work in putting this trip report together but for breakfast when we met up and for the use of your room for storage until I could change hotels!

David,

Thanks for all your comments. It's the replies from forum members that help motivate me to post.

I do frequent the Wizard of Odds website, and have for years. Despite knowing what the best blackjack rules are, all that seems to go out the window when I'm actually in Las Vegas and have the convenience of a blackjack game in the hotel I'm staying at with subpar rules.

Video Poker never quite did it for me. I did learn perfect strategy for Deuces Wild and Jacks or Better years ago, but I never really found it "fun".

You do know your stuff, and you raise some great points.

Take care.

Hi Ed,

I'm very happy to (and want to) help people to at the very least give them food for thought (although I don't want to sound too dictatorial -- although people are free to take or leave anything that I have to say)!

I know that it's very, very easy to just play whatever games and rules that any casino has to offer (even if it is subpar), but I know that the real question that players need to ask themselves when they are in any casino is, "Am I here playing to play (that is playing for the sake of playing), or am I here to play to Win?" There actually is a big difference between these two concepts! And those people who play to win are more likely to achieve their goals.

At least I think that it is more "fun" to be playing the best games in the best manner as opposed to guessing and/or worrying as to what to do, how to bet and when to leave the table and/or the casino! Playing with subpar table rules or machine paytables can more easily help to cripple us financially!

As for me, I am in the casino on a mission to do what I can to get at least some money and hopefully maybe some comps out of them while doing what I can to cost myself as little as possible while doing so.

I know that people have different definitions of what is "fun" to them, but that really should be weighed with what that "fun" has the potential to cost them. This actually all should better end up being a fine balancing act (so as to not put yourself into a position where you can end up going too far overboard financially).

It definitely is very easy to go on "Tilt" and/or to get into a degenerate mode while in the casino, but it's better (and important) for a player to do what s/he can to rein those urges all in and to control yourself.

The casinos definitely want us players to fall into that trap (of losing control and/or to not make the best decisions), but we don't have to do that! We actually do have the control (if we want it badly enough) to help ourselves to play the games in the best possible manner as well as the ability to set and keep reasonable Win Goals and Loss Limits (based on our bankrolls) for each playing session that we have!

The casinos are offering us a challenge to get at their money and comps and I have taken the time and effort to do what I can to increase my chances at getting to this stuff so that I can have at least a farily if not a pretty inexpensive vacation and maybe even come back with more money than what I had allocated for play!

Take care and I do hope that our paths in LV cross again at some point in the future!

My family and I went to Springs Preserve last summer and it was awesome! Maybe you noticed, they have solar panels over the parking lot....the cars stay cool and it generates power for the facility..we were amazed how cool the car was.

Plan another trip with your mom, you won't regret it in the coming years.
