Noahcat goes to a Wedding
A few weeks ago, this guy I know from the rooms of A.A. asks me if I would be his guest at his son’s wedding.
I said “What day is that?”
He says “A Sunday”
I comment “I have to work the next day.”
He responds “everyone does.”
well then- he says it’s a day wedding.
OK then. I figure it’s service,right? .. he has a plus one.
We trade phone numbers.
Then a few days later he calls to say why don’t we have a local dinner w/ his son and his bride to be so I get to know them.
OK- 2 meals are better than one..
They’re great kids! Sweet, happy, excited- sane, normal- and both of them are also in AA.. They got sober early. After dinner, we walked towards home and played 2 games of pool. It was all fun, relaxed and easy. Plus, I made a few good pool shots- haven’t played pool for 20 years.
Then next day this guy finds me on my walk path. (I guessed I mentioned I walk at dinner) OK, maybe he’s interested.
Turns out, John, my casino husband; is also going to the wedding so I’ll know someone. Yay.
Day before the wedding, this guy let’s me know he’s IN the wedding party, he’ll be ushering and BTW- wedding at 3PM

Pre cocktail hour 4:30 -5:30
Cocktail hour is 90 minutes long.
Formal dinner and reception 7-11.
Yikes!
I said I’d hang in there as long as I could.
I knew this was not about me; it’s the kids day, not mine. I kept telling myself that all weekend but wow, did I resent getting dressed up in stockings, full make-up, curled hair and high heels on a Sunday! (The answer is yes, I did)
John text me “Want a ride to the church?
Yes please. He showed up w/ his room-mate, Illya, they didn’t get to ask dates. The sun came out but it was still very windy-
This Wedding was cataloged, every part documented and photographed. Outside the church I see ..OK.. his name is Norman; I see Norman in bright eye-blinding Neon Kelly-Green vest and bow-tie as are the other 4 groomsmen (I knew one groomsman, had played poker w/ him a few times) and bridesmaids dresses…Irish, much? They are Irish and Norwegian. The brides dress and hair was flawless- the kids were both smiling ear-to-ear and glowing.
We were given bubbles to blow as they left the church (In a white Rolls-Royce)
Now, John and I talked about getting a card game together. They even drove me home to get cards and my change tub but no one knew what was going on at the banquet Hall at 4:30..
We do the next right thing which is go the place. It’s called Sirocco’s on 13th and 79th street.
It was a coffee and cookie holding room while the Bridal Party drove to Gardens to take photos- Then we got told to go to another room where there was an open bar (I don’t drink..many folks there didn’t drink) I was surprised they had a bar- as more than half the family of 3 generations was sober but alright; guests are guests.
Believe it or not, I’m not very social and don’t see the point of small talk or chit-chat. I told John this is bull*&th and was going to leave. He kept me there. (He thinks Norman is a great guy and we’re perfect for each other)
John is a romantic. I pulled out my Nook (thanks for the tip, Karen) and started reading.
I had a small plate of food, felt better but the day is long and I’m wearing heels. No Norman in sight.
@ 7:10PM,
(ZZZZZZZZ) we were escorted into the main dining hall w/ flowers, lights and DJ, seated for 15 minutes until the wedding party was announced, (I am again readin my Nook) the peonies on each table reminded me of funeral homes and death but i know I'm negative when I get tired... they formed a human tunnel and the bride & groom walked around under and thru.
Then there were Champagne stewards for every table for the toast (we drank soda)
the first dance started, Norman had to dance w/ a bridesmaid—but wait!!!...he came, he scooped me up and then we were dancing- one dance leads to another.
The man can dance- slow and fast! (Yay!)
We danced a session, until the DJ turned the music down and we had a salad to eat, same thing- more music, more dancing. The DJ must have had ADD because nothing was a whole record- Motown turned into Jackson 5 turned into to Disco turned into Rap.
The dance floor was jubilant, the bride and groom both young, happy and in love, never got off the dance floor- the 3 year old ringbear wearing a mini tux and spats was the center of attention-- really a fun ode to joy- there were 4 generations out on the dance floor. Norman has brothers, sisters and a LARGE family. It seems I got introduced to all of them on the dance floor.
It’s 8:30,
pasta bolanese or vodka sauce pasta comes,
9:30 provided a wonderful filet mingon that I have no appetite for but eat cuz it’s so good.
We dance some more, I throw caution to the wind and enjoy myself ( I am so sore today!! Alieve City)
- Norman can keep up but I look at the clock and say “Oh no! I really have to leave” I felt like Cinderella- It’s 10:30 on a school night? Sweaty, starting to ache, Norman wants to call me a cab/ John says he’ll leave and see me home. I go off w/ Illya and John in their suits leaving Norman on the sidewalk to finish celebrating.
After a shower and watching Amazing Race on DVR- it was midnight before I got to sleep.
It was fun, but I am tired, limping and went off my diet.
I hope I don’t have to go to another function for another 10 years (Forgot, I was at Flips wedding and Flips nephews wedding in the 2000's) and IF Norman does ask me out again, I pray it will be in the daytime.
P.S. the kids are off to Cancun for 10 days- I wish them well. They are truly in love.
