November 6-9, Aria and Mandarin Oriental

Since I enjoy everyone else's so much, I feel obligated to post as well. I will skip travel other than to say we flew SWA and they were fine. We got in at 8:30 a.m. on a Thursday. Airport not too busy, but more people than I would have expected at that time. We headed straight to Aria to check in. We were able to check in, but got no room, just keys. We dropped our bags of and cabbed it to the Peppermill. A great way to start any Vegas trip. The Fireside Lounge is just as you remember it and still makes a great bloody mary (for me) and a great mai tai (for my wife). Breakfast was great, a hamsteak that covered the plate and an omelette for my wife.

We started walking and hit the Venetian to pick up our tickets for Tim Allen on Saturday night. We then hit the Mirage, found a $10 table and played for a couple of hours, up and down, community property wise, we left even. We always stop by the Bellagio conservatory and check out the display. It did not disappoint. Flower horses, giant pumpkins and trees with faces! What more could you want?

I had to get back to the Aria to enter into the slot tournament courtesy of MyVegas. There were two "heats." A total of 14 people. The winner gets $500 in freeplay, second place is two Zarkana tickets and third gets two Aria buffets. I was in the second heat. I was assigned the same machine that had the highest total during the first heat. And, it came in first again! We played the $500 through at the Alibi bar, 9/5 JoB. Turned it into $455. Drew four to a royal once, but couldn't connect. Alibi serves Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA. A very good brew, my wife turned $20 into $60 sitting right next to me, so a very fun session.

We then ran over to Harrah's to hang out with Big Elvis, another tradition. I made us go then because I didn't think he played on Friday, but he does. Our friends texted us that they had arrived and so we told them to meet us at Julian Serrano in Aria. We tried all of the sangrias, red, white and bubbly. Enjoyed them all, probably liked the red the most. I had booked Aria with a $50 resort credit, it was quickly eaten up at JS. We headed to the Cosmopolitan for dinner at China Poblano.

Two things, one, we walked through the walkway right next to the screened off Harmon just waiting for demolition. It will be good when it goes, and I was wondering if they are going to replace it or not. Do people know? Second thing, does the Cosmopolitan have a bad restaurant? We thoroughly enjoyed Jose Andres' China Poblano. Not fusion, just a great combination of Mexican and Chinese street food done with high end ingredients. If I had a gripe, the drinks were fine and interesting, but not on the same level as the food.

Then we started our Harrah's Strip Crawl. We planned to hit all of the Harrah's properties over two nights. We started at the PHo and played some craps and had a beer. Finished up around $40. Walked to the Paris, tried to figure out what to do and ended up playing bar top vp over near some live music. The VP was not serious as we were distracted by several dancers getting their groove on. Surprisingly, it was the middle aged guys garnering the most attention. One very aggressive guy would not take no for an answer from his prospective partners. The other guys looked put together from the waist up, but was wearing running shorts which were way too short. Had a few drinks, including the world's worst margarita and headed to Bally's. I can't remember what we played here, but we spent some time here and then hit the Cromwell. We have always liked this place since it was the Barbary Coast and it still has a great feel. It looks great and its small so that cocktail service is always strong. We sat down to a $10 blackjack table and played until 2:30 in the morning, pretty late for us. At one point I switched to chardonnay, which was very tasty, but apparently not manly enough for our group or the cocktail waitress. I took a lot of grief for the wine, but it was good and hit the spot. We left there up over $300 between my wife and I. Great end to a great first day. I'll post the second day in a second post.

Enjoying it so far; keep it comin'! Strip crawls are so much fun
Looking forward to the next one. Very curious to hear about Mandarin Oriental.

Can't wait for part 2!
Sorry, got distracted by work! Second day, woke up a little slow. Aria rooms were actually very comfortable. Couldn't get much going other than to check in to the Mandarin. At the Aria, we checked in and they gave us card keys, but no room number. At the MO they checked us in, but, as no room was ready, we got no card key or room. But, when they did give us a room, the bags had already been delivered! The MO is a very nice hotel. The lounge is the greatest "drinks with a view" gem on the strip. The view is straight up the strip and is amazing at night. The drinks and service are both excellent. They put together some appetizers for a party and everything was awesome. High end mini corn dogs, bacon wrapped short ribs, mac n' cheese, it was all great. If i Had one complaint, the bed was not as comfortable as most of the high end hotels that I have experienced. But everything else was top notch. By way of comparison, we stayed at the Four Seasons last year and the MO was neck and neck with the Four Seasons on everything.

We had the lunch deal at Estiatorio Milos at the Cosmopolitan, excellent as always. Two of us had the sea bass, one shrimp and one octopus. It was all great. We then resumed our Harrah's mission. We started at the Flamingo, played some crummy slot, lost some money, had a Blue Moon and moved on. The LinQ was disappointing for a while too, then we hit TAG. TAG is heaven for beer drinkers! We found all kinds of amazing hard to find beers and they were comping them all for video poker play. I'm sure the pay tables were lousy, but when you are drinking Dogfish Head 90 minute IPAs, Grimbergen Dubbels, Duvels, Three Philosophers Quadrupel, etc. you really can't complain. Or at least we didn't. Actually won a couple of bucks at VP/Machine BJ and then spun the promo wheel they had been trumpeting for an hour or so. We won two for one High Roller tickets, which was great because we definitely wanted to do that and $20 at a LinQ restaurant. Not great prizes, but not too bad. We then went to Harrah's. The bar at the north end makes great cadillac margaritas and so I played some and had one. I think we lost a few bucks at blackjack too.

We did hit Giada's bar area for some lobster arancini and a drink. Both were fantastic. This place is highly recommended. It was a little pricey, but food, drink, view and overall ambience were super. We had dinner at Julian Serrano's at the Aria. Really good. We think Jaleo at the Cosmopolitan was a smidge better, but really fun and good. My party kind of pooped out on me and I reluctantly and a bit peevishly, hit the hay. Saturday was a full day of conference, but we got out at night. More to come.
Thanks for Part 2 of your report. Sounds like a nice time was had with nice food and drinks as well as well as it not sounding like you lost much $ either!

Now looking forward to Part 3.

I have always wanted to have a drink in the bar at Mandarin Oriental but have yet to set foot in the hotel. I'm really going to try visit it during my next trip.
To anyone that hasn't had a drink at the Mandarin Oriental lounge, this is a 'must do'. At any rate, the third day included a full day of conference. A very good conference, good speakers, good topics and some good practical tips to bring back home. I also got to try out the MO fitness center. Very nice, and the treadmills have a view! After the conference let out, we had a couple of hours of down time. We wandered over to Aria. I had some old two for one drink coupons and the Deuce bar. The deuce is now a high limits sports bar/gambling salon. Let's just say that the testosterone is stifling! I would definitely come back on a 'boys' trip' but would not be able to drag my wife back in! Cigars, leather couches, big screen tv, young, attractive, put your hand on the arm cocktail waitresses, what's not to like? The top shelf margarita was just okay, the bartender looked better than she made drinks!

We bailed out of there with time to kill, so we tried Todd English's P.U.B. It was very good. Very pricey, if it hadn't been happy hour I don't know if we would have stayed. Half price made most pints $6-$8, we also had some sliders. They were the best hamburger sliders I've ever had. Morton's is close, but these were awesome. After a Belgian Dubbel and an IPA we headed back to MO for a cameo at the cocktail reception. Then we raced off to the Venetian for the Tim Allen show. Funny, he's a pro. But it felt a little phoned in. With all of the entertainment options available, we cannot recommend. We walked back toward the High Roller. We had to stop at the Casino Royale for a $1 Michelob! I stop every time we pass as I want them to feel appreciated! The High Roller was great, especially at half price. Totally worth it. There is a bar in line, so I don't know if the happy hour version would be worth it for civilized groups. The bartender in our line was from the east coast and was hilarious. She told us what we wanted to drink, not the other way around. Really great views, fun photo opportunities, very happy we did it.

The last remaining CET property on the strip was Caesar's. So across the street we went! I like Caesar's but the table limits are always a little on the high side, so we found one of those giant slot machines and put money in. It was pooled money with our friends. On the first spin, we won $80 and on the second $45! That was good enough for us. Our Harrah's strip crawl was complete and we had money in our pockets. Our friend really wanted to go the 'secret' pizza place at the Cosmo. So we did. Unfortunately, we timed it perfectly with the end of the Bruno Mars concert. It was packed and we stood in line with hipsters galore for 45 minutes. Still, even lines in Vegas are great for people watching, so we watched people and album covers for a long time. The pizza and beer was good. I am happy to now be able to say that we have been to secret pizza. I would go back, but not right after a concert. That was pretty much it for the night. We went back to the MO and crashed!

Very nice! Thanks for that part of the report and good going on the Slot machine winning!
