Sunday, April 17th
Time for our yearly Spring Break trip to Las Vegas. With Easter being so late, we had a hard time waiting! Flew Southwest from Pittsburgh, uneventful flight. We cabbed to the Orleans to begin our first 2 days. We stayed at the Orleans for the first time in October and really liked staying there. We had a good offer from them, so we took it.
We ate dinner at Big Al’s Oyster Bar. It was good, but the portions were huge. We began what would be our streak of really long dinners since they put us at the bar top table near the entrance and forgot about us. Eventually we were noticed and after we ordered we got our food pretty fast. The waitress felt bad about our wait and comped our ice teas.
Now time to play. I love the Dream Card machine and played without any big winners. Tried a few other games. It was only 9:00 in Vegas, but midnight our time, so we went to bed early. Let me say that we only play video poker. My favorite games are the Deuces Wild varieties, but I do play Double Double Bonus and regular Jacks. When I gamble anywhere, I have but one goal—to hit the 2’s!
Monday, April 18th
Up at 5:00 am , as usual, and we had a big day planned. We played at the Orleans but weren’t hitting, so we took the 7:17 bus up to Gold Coast, where we couldn’t hit anything either. Husband swiped his card for the birthday promo and won 2,000 points, the lowest amount. Walked to the Palms, which is one of husband’s favorite places to play. He always does well there, I never do. I always play the full pay deuces, and never do well, but I hit a few wild royals so I actually cashed out a little. The Palms had some promo going that you could swipe and win free airfare, luggage, free play etc. after earning 25 points. My husband won a food credit. Great, we’re using the LVA coupon at Garduno’s for dinner. Did the match play coupon on roulette and lost, as usual.
Off to use the coupon for the Eiffel Tower. I had been on it in Nov. with my son and it was freezing! Much better weather today. Took a few pictures then headed to the Cosmopolitan, which was one of our big goals for today. It was straight up 11:00, so we went to the Wicked Spoon buffet as it opened. We did wait about 15 mins. to get in, as they were rather slow at the register. It was worth the wait, though. I thought it was excellent, though my husband felt Bellagio’s is better (I’ve never been there). The salads and desserts were my favorites. We then went to explore the Cosmo. It was interesting, and it did have a lot of places were you could sit and relax, if you wanted to. I was looking forward to seeing the “Art O Matic” machines I had read about, and we bought 3 “boxes” of art. I got a pair of red earrings which I put on. Maybe they’d be lucky.

We played a bit at the casino and tried a DDB progressive that was over $1700. No royal, but I got two quads in quick succession, so that was good. Cashed out my profit and wandered around. I really like the casino, but there are better odds in many other places. So off to our next big goal, to Ellis Island, to be followed by Terrible’s.
We had never been to Ellis Island, but on their website it said they had Barbaric Deuces. This is an evil machine that we had only ever seen at the El Cortez. It drops quarters into your tray if it deals you 2 or 3 deuces, and has bonuses on the 5 OAK. If it deals you 4 deuces it pays a ridiculous amount. It basically eats money, but we have to try it a few times each trip. However, the website lied, no Barbaric Deuces. My husband did find a Quick Quads for nickels, and he loves this game. He played a few hands and it dealt him a quick quad (playing triple play) so he was happy. We cashed that out and headed to Terrible’s to try our luck with the coupon.
Using the coupon was very easy. We decided to try the $1 DDB that people have written about. We blew through $100 in five minutes. Had several three of a kinds dealt to us, but could never fill one in. Even the woman in the booth was amazed at how fast our money went. She told us how to redeem the credits, which was a bit confusing. We eventually figured it out and played the credits through some Game Makers that were to the right of the main door. You need to insert the card and get the message that you have 100 bonus dollars. Then you need to insert a minimum of one dollar in cash into the machine. Then it will let you download credits. We won back $75, so at least we got something back. Hopped on the bus and headed back to the Cosmo—I wanted to try the DDB progressive again, but no luck.
We ran through the Bellagio just to see the conservatory flowers, which was done in a Spring Carnival scene—they even had a real carousel and ferris wheel, (neither operating) which was neat. Took the bus back to the Gold Coast and played some more. Monday is “Young at Heart Day” at the GC, and seniors 50 and over get specials, including 100 credits in free play if you hit 4 fives. Hubby tried several games, no luck. Over to the Palms and played some more before dinner. My husband sits down at the FPD and immediately gets 4 fives! Oh well. Stuffed ourselves at Garduno’s and used $38 of the coupon. We went back to the Gold Coast where I won a match play, then shuttled back to the Orleans.
At the Orleans I used my $10 free play on Dream Card and hit the deuces! Cashed out a $55 winner and put in some more money and hit them again! Yeah, even though it was nickels. My husband also hit them a little later, but he hates getting them for nickels. Around 10:00 we called it a night, since we were up so early. When we got to the room there was a letter that the water would be off from 2:00-5:00 am. Curses, couldn’t get up early!
Tuesday, April 19
I woke up at 4:30 and there really was no water, so I forced myself to go back to sleep until 6:00. Took the bus up to the Gold Coast for the breakfast buffet. It is small, but very good quality, and inexpensive. Hubby plays Wheel Poker and gets quads so he gets to spin. I tried several times and never got to spin. We head back to the Palms and play some more. He does the promo again and wins free play, but you can’t redeem it for 24 hours. Oh well, we’ll be downtown by then, as this is the day we move to the Main Street Station.
We take the shuttle back to the Orleans and play a bit more. This is “Young At Heart Day” at the Orleans, so he has 5X points. I lose at Dream Card. I have lost all morning, so I don’t really want to play anymore right now. We lose both match plays on roulette. I cash a traveler’s check. This is my strategy to get lucky again, as I often win after I cash one. My husband talks me in to playing Double Bonus Deuces Wild. I put in a $20 and play for a little bit before I hit 5 aces for $200. A few hands later I hit 5 fives, for $100, then 5 aces again! In about 10 mins I have won $500 dollars! I play a bit more and have no winner so I cash it out and we cab to the Main Street. We end up in room 1601—we are usually in 1602 or 1604, so I am very familiar with this part of the hotel. I miss the large room and bathroom of the Orleans.
Down to the casino. Some of our most favorite games in Vegas are at the MSS. We love Treasure Chest, Pay the Aces, and playing at the bar. I usually do very well playing in the MSS and the Cal. We play a bit, no big wins or losses. We work our way down Fremont Street looking for big royal progressives, but don’t find too many. There is one at the bar at the Vegas Club for $1700 and one at Dave’s Bar at the Cal for $1500. We did our photo with the million dollars at Binion’s and enjoyed our annual shrimp cocktail at Golden Gate.
Back to the room and cleaned up for dinner at the Flame. We went to the El Cortez around 5:00, so we could play before our 6:00 dinner reservation. There was a royal at the DDB that was over $2200. I hit quad nines and kings and a straight flush, so I really didn’t want to eat, I wanted to keep playing. But we went to dinner, which was excellent. The place was fairly crowded, and we watched everyone around us eating who came after us. Finally the waitress came to apologize that they’d lost our order, but had found it, and we’d have food soon. The food was great, but all I could think about was that royal. It took us almost 2 hours for dinner. She comped our beverages, so with the coupon and drinks removed we only spent $25. Getting forgotten seems to be our dinner theme this trip.
We both took turns at Barbaric Deuces, but it was very barbaric and we lost badly. Tried the royal again, nothing. They have 2 deuces machines that pay double for twos, and have a 4700 royal. I couldn’t get near either of them. We left and saw the 9:00 show on the Viva Vision. I love the FSE, but the last 3 times we have been in Vegas we have seen the same shows. We miss the shows from several years ago, which were more imaginative.
Back through the Club, try the royal, no luck. Try the royal at Dave’s Bar, no luck. I hit a progressive there 2 years ago, so I like playing there. Next to Dave’s is a bank of Gamemakers that has Wild 7’s, which is like deuces, only with sevens. Hitting sevens satisfies my urges for deuces, but no luck.
Back to MSS, where I accomplish one goal and hit quads on the Treasure Chest. I play Pay the Aces and get 3 aces dealt for 250 quarters. Pay the Aces is an odd, addictive game. You get 5 quarters dealt into the tray if you get 1 ace, without a face card. You get 10 quarters for 2 aces, no faces, and 250 for 3 aces, no faces. You get 7500 quarters if you get 4 aces, no faces. I like to play it because I have gotten the 3 aces several times before, and I get them tonight and quad kings. I then find a Bonus Deuces game with a royal over $1500 and I get several wild royals and 5 OAK, so I cash out a decent profit. Go back to Dave’s bar, no luck and no 7’s, Time for bed.
Wednesday, April 20th
We slept in until 6:30! I put on my new “lucky” earrings from Cosmo. I’ll give them one more chance to be lucky. We had decided to go out to Texas Station and Fiesta. We thought about going to the Suncoast, using the bus, but it only runs every hour, and we could end up waiting a long time to come back if we are losing. Also, the 106 bus picks up right outside the MSS. So off to Texas and Fiesta. We have the breakfast buffet only because it is cheap. I use the coupon and they take $3 off the other buffet because we have a card, so breakfast for two is only a little over $5. The breakfast at Texas is adequate. We lose like crazy at both casinos—should have tried the Suncoast! Take the bus back to MSS.
Try the royal at Dave’s, no luck. I try the match play and the free play at the Vegas Club and win both. I make $7.35 on some bizarre slot, since this is the only thing that I can find that takes the free play. We go to the Fitz because they have sent my husband some coupons for his birthday. He loses the match play—was in the right color, then bounces into 00. He wins $13.75 using his $10 free play on Joker Poker, then runs it up to $20 and cashes out.
We walk back to the El Cortez because I want to play the double deuces machine and Barbaric Deuces. It is also Klondike bar day. If you win $25, you get a Klondike bar. Still can’t get a seat on the deuces game and Barbaric Deuces is broken. Discouraged, we try Bonus Deuces and hit simultaneous wild royals, sitting side-by-side. Yeah, 2 Klondike bars! The Barbaric Deuces is now fixed, but someone is playing it. I am finally able to get on the other deuces machine. No 2’s, but 2 wild royals and a few 5 OAK, so I cash out a decent profit. We enjoy our bars and head back up to MSS. I want to eat early since we had only the buffet in the am (and our Klondike bars).
We stop at the Golden Nugget to play at hubby’s favorite “ATM machine”, the Deuces Wild Progressive. This is an interesting machine, as it has a progressive on everything 4 of a kind and higher. The deuces can actually be worth nearly $300, but not too often. I like this game, but it hates me. He always cashes out money right and left, but I lose. I actually play it for at least 15 mins and get 2 wild royals. I have been very lucky with wild royals this trip. I cash out a little and want to get something from the room before dinner at Pasta Pirate. He decides to keep playing. I barely make it to the room before he calls me to say he’s hit the two’s for $276. We meet at Pasta Pirate for an early dinner. We use the $20 food credit from MSS and the $10 off coupon, so dinner is about $12. Again, the long dinner curse hits, but at least it’s not a 2 hour dinner. It is our last night so I am in panic mode.
Now I decide to try the ACG coupons at the Golden Gate. I get a match play and lose. I try to get the 100 points for the free play. I don’t play slots, but they don’t really have any decent poker, so I try “Cash Coaster”. It is an amusement park themed slot and we are both coaster fans, so this should be good. Wrong. Even though I hit the “cash coaster” two times, I win nothing. I get 3 snow cones out of the 5 reels, and I win. I hate slots. Finally I get the points and do awful. I am not doing this promo again. We watch the American Pie show at 8:00, which is my favorite of the ones they run.
Back to MSS/Cal for the night. The royal at Dave’s Bar is now nearing $1900. We are playing deuces and we both hit 4 sevens. Try the sevens machine and do awful. Enough! Back to MSS. I am still mad at myself for the Golden Gate fiasco, and am not hitting anything. I decide to try Treasure Chest one more time. I can only get a seat on the progressive bank. It is at $1,193 when I sit down. I am keeping a close eye on the meter because I have to be done before it hits $1200. It doesn’t matter, I do awful. I am focused on only getting quads and am down to my last 2 plays. It deals me 3 to the royal. Usually when I get 3 to a royal dealt I get a little excited, but all I can think is this won’t get me a quad. I do get the K and Q of hearts though, so I get the royal! Yeah! I have won back everything I’ve lost and then some. In the MSS you get a hand pay, so I get to hear the happy music playing for a long time. It is more fun than getting the ticket on a ticket machine. My husband gets 3 aces on Pay the Aces and we have a few close calls on the royal at Deuces Bonus, but nothing else. Off to bed at 11:30.

Thursday April 21st
Up bright and early, as we have to leave for the airport at noon. I start my day at the MSS bar, but no big winner. We head back down to the El Cortez for one last shot at the deuces machines. The progressive is over $1700 already, and I get 9’s and Kings, and 4 to the royal (I get the king of diamonds, not spades!). I cash out my bucket of quarters and try Barbaric Deuces, but now the bill acceptor is broken and it drops out every other quarter, so I give up. Back to MSS for the final hours.
One last try at the royal at Dave’s bar. I play deuces and hit 2 natural 4 OAKs. Switch to Wild 7’s one last time and again do horrid. Decide to try Pay the Aces one last time. We usually only make it to Vegas once a year, yet every time the same man is playing this game. We have seen him there every day, and he is there for hours. I take a seat next to him. I play for a few hands, and it deals me 4 aces—with a Jack –a FACE CARD! This man is distraught and goes on and on about how horrible this is, how it has ruined his day, etc. Hey, I was feeling kind of happy about the $100, but not now. Everyone has to come over and give their condolences. It is a 4 OAK though, and I do get a scratch card, which is actually worth $5, not $2 as usual. I wander off to try the Bonus Deuces one more time. I get 2 more 4 to the royal dealt, but nothing. My husband tries the Aces and the man says, “Oh, you should have been here. This poor lady had 4 aces and a jack earlier” Hubby says he knows, it was his wife.
I head up to the room to finalize packing and leave him playing Jokers. I wasn’t gone very long, but he has hit 3 natural 4 OAK and 2 with a Joker. As I watch he gets a straight flush. All this in about 15 mins. It is now 11:00 so he reluctantly cashes out and we head to the buffet for lunch. Every trip I swear I am not eating at the buffet, but with our flight time it just makes sense to eat quickly and get to the airport.
We check out and actually find a cab at MSS. There is no line to check in and we have 2 hours to waste at the airport. I try a few more times to hit my elusive deuces at the airport, but no luck. I always like to play a bit at the airport because one time I hit a royal there! Uneventful flight, even ½ hour early. Now home to recoup before work on Monday.
When we added it all up, we came back home with everything we took, plus $100 (thank you Aces). This includes all our meals, cabs, souvenirs, etc, so another free vacation. Thanks for reading!
