We VP addicts have a name for that type of hand: a "nine-fuck." If we're playing together, we buy dinner for the first person who gets one.
The other type of near miss is where you get, say, the King of clubs when you need the King of spades, and for one brief microsecond, you think you've hit it. We call that "the heart attack hand."
Oh, I should also mention the "screen saver hand," where you miss a royal draw and the machine hurriedly gives you some small win, like a full house, on the next hand. The object is to keep you from bashing in the screen in frustration.
