Oct 1-5th.

The Vegas itch caught me. Checked offers and airfares and booked a trip. My neighbor decided to accompany me. Flew in from Canada, no problems with the flight. In the Minneapolis airport, I started teaching Marianne how to play video poker, jacks or better.
Dollar Rent a car had wonderful rates, but the wait was unreal. Met a fine man from Australia who pulled out pictures of his family and kept me entertained in the long line. We finally arrived at Main Street Station. I had an offer of free rooms and free food and of course slot play. Was given a room on the top floor on the railroad side (quiet side). Nice room, comfortable bed. The free food turned out to be their coupon book. It only covers certain meals. Marianne and I ate an early supper at the 777 Brew Club. The meatloaf was very tasty and was free with the coupons. We drove out to Sam's Town to see the free laser show. First time, I have seen it. Quite entertaining. Then we walked through their casino. There just happened to be a few video poker machines right near the lounge act. So we enjoyed listening to the band while we sat next to each other playing one machine. She would push the bet buttons, I would tell her the proper hold and we would take turns hitting the draw button. Slow way to play. Back to MSS and called it a night.
The next morning we decided on a hike in the desert. Red Rock Canyon National Monument was closed, however further down the road the hiking trails were open. Grabbed bottles of water and set forth. I entertained Marianne with lots of desert trivia while we explored the beauty of the Red Rock Canyon. Hours later we dragged ourselves back to the car, wondering why we forgot sun glasses and hats. Marianne was disappointed we didn't see any wild burros. I promised the next morning we would go at sunrise and try to find some. 5 minutes further up the road, Marianne spied a herd of burros next to another trail. We headed out hiking again. Didn't get really close to the burros, but did get some nice photos. A little further down the road and we saw some burros right next to the road. laughs.
Stopped at Red Rock Casino for lunch. It was senior day with a free slot tournament and food at 1/2 the points. Enjoyed a fine lunch of soup and salad, I had lots of points on my card. We played a little video poker. Still played together, but I didn't have to tell her every hold. We tried the slot tournament. No luck. Headed back to MSS.
We wanted to check the prices of several shows at Tickets Tonight. Picked up a bunch of brochures. We stopped at Mermaids. After all I had to give her the full experience of Vegas. Got our free beads and our drawing tickets. Played penny slots as slowly as possible and waited for the drawing. Yipee they drew my number. I won..........$2. Laughs. Walked over to see the shark tank.
Spent the evening on the Strip. Toured the Bellagio gardens and the free show at the Venetian.
Thursday morning we headed out to Sam's Town. Then out to Fiesta Henderson. They were running a promotion of playing for bottles of wine. Marianne played her own machine next to me, so I could help. We both had good cards and won a little. And we both won 2 bottles of wine.
Next stop was Green Valley Ranch. Marianne wanted to go shopping. We parked in valet and headed over to the shops. Good fun. We returned to Green Valley Ranch and played a bit in the smoke free section. Decided to just eat in the food court. Afterward we were walking through the casino when I spotted some Multistrike machines. We again played together on one machine. Hit winner after winner, including a full house on the top 8x level. We cashed out at $900. We split the win, but still made for a fun afternoon.
For the evenings entertainment we attended "Divas". We found coupons in the "What's On" magazine. Called the box office and were told the show would cost us $35 but we had to go in person to the box office with the coupons. We presented our coupons and the lady informed us that they were only good on the premium seats so our tickets would be $61. Marianne and I stepped to the side to discuss it. We must of mentioned the earlier phone call in our discussion, because the lady at the ticket counter suddenly said , ok. you can have the tickets for $25. I don't know where that amount came from, but we smiled and paid her. The seats were great. The show quite entertaining.
Friday is swipe your card, guaranteed winner at Station casinos. We started at Fiesta Henderson. Won 10 free drawing tickets for the following weekends drawing. Think you have to be there to win, and we are flying out before that. Laughs. Drove to Green Valley Ranch and played a bit more Multistrike, but only one good win. My swipe was a free buffet, but it was dated for the next week. Laughs. At least we tried. Headed out to the outlet stores on S Las Vegas Blvd. Had a good time shopping, even bought a few things.
For supper we stopped at Pasta Pirate to see if we could get a table. It was 4:45, they could get us in at 5. Perfect. This is at the California Casino. They offer a special for $20, lobster and tenderloin with soup and a glass of wine included. The food was wonderful. The lobster small, but the tenderloin was very tender and tasty. We warned the server we had coupons. Used the 2 for 1 coupon from our MRB then the dinner coupon from our coupon book we had at check in for $4.oo off, then I paid with my points for another 40% off.
Headed back down to the Strip. We watched the Sirens of TI. Then tried out their new member promotion. You need to earn points first then, spin on their swipe machines for your $20-$200 slot play.
We of course got the $20.
Saturday we just played at MSS. By this time Marianne was willing to play her own machine. Actually she was asking for a little more time playing when I dragged her away to the airport.

Thanks for the report!

Is your friend willing to deal with and have a playing strategy chart in front of her? I always have one with me and often consult it (since although I know how to recognize the different types of full and partial hands, I don't necessarily know where they rank).

It's good you found that coupon for the show in "What's On" magazine -- you never know what you may find in these magazines and it can be good!

And with the Outlet stores, many times, if someone has an Auto Club (AAA) Card, if you go to Customer Service (or somesuch), you can get a further discount coupon booklet.

Nice report, good of you to be a guide to a Vegas newbie, wife and I have done this numerous times with our children and friends. We are going to Laughlin on a charter flight for 4 nights later this month, it's not Vegas but we enjoy the change of pace.
Thanks for the report. It was a fun read.

Fun, fun, fun. Congratulations on a successful trip.
Thanks for the post, you made good use of your time.
Great report Mary. You girls covered a lot of ground and such a variety of activities in just 5 days! I'm curious to know about the 2 bottles of wine that you won at Fiesta Henderson. How did you get them home? I wouldn't think they would let you carry them on. Packing them in your luggage seems a little risky and HEAVY. Thanks for the entertaining and concise read.
To get the wine home, we wrapped it in our package paper from our shopping. Then asked the maid for a dirty clothes bag to wrap each bottle. Finished by placing each bottle carefully in the suitcase between lots of soft clothes. We did both check our bags. Mary
Sounds like you played at many of the same places I did last week.
Thanks for posting your trip report. It sounds like you had a good time. From your trip report, I am not sure if you are a Dollar Express member. By joining you can bypass the general line. Joining is free, and you can join online at their website. There are certain special rates for members, but these are not as cheap as the special Las Vegas rates which anyone can get by clicking on the city special rates.
