Overview
After my July trip I had been receiving offers from Red Rock. Although I had stayed there previously with my Dad and a friend on some other trips, my wife had never stayed there. I knew she’d enjoy it and never knowing how long the offers will last, I took them up on 3 nights (good anytime) and $50 slot play.
Transportation
We flew Southwest out of Orlando Friday 1/20, and found an excellent rate at $262 per person plus tax. We flew out at 8am on Friday and got into Vegas at 10:30am. On the return flight Monday, we left Vegas at 5pm and got back into Orlando around 12:15am. Both flights were full, but uneventful.
I had a car reserved with Dollar for 3 days plus 4 hours. I kept checking the rates and got a Full size for $35 plus tax (tax ended up being $42…lol). That was $77 for the car, which I thought was an excellent rate. As a Dollar Express member I went directly to the booth downstairs and my car was located right next to the booth. I was pleasantly surprised when I inspected the car. It was a brand new Nissan Altima with 5 miles on it. During my past several rentals with Dollar, the vehicles had many miles and lots of wear and tear. The only thing that I questioned was the lack of a license tag with the Express Clerk. He noted the sticker in the windshield from the Nevada DMV that indicated that the tag had been applied for. He said we’d be fine…this would come into play briefly later in this report.
Lodging
Red Rock Resort for all three nights. We used this as base camp and played here a great deal. Room was on the 15th floor with a Canyon View. Comfortable bed and a large bathroom with a soaking tub. Wife LOVED it! We used the workout facility and my wife booked a massage which she said was excellent.
I also booked El Cortez for some free play and dining credit as I knew we’d be downtown for a bit throughout the weekend. This was a Tower Room on the 15th floor. Decent room. Came with a free bottle of wine coupon to the Flame which we would use.
Meals
Our first meal off the plane was at the buffet at the M Resort. I had received a free buffet with a line pass, while my wife was downgraded to a 10% off coupon. Still an excellent deal, especially cruising past the line.
We ate at the Feast Buffet at Red Rock twice (free with offer), once was for the Sunday Champagne brunch…good selection good food. Greased the server at the onset of the brunch and was not left wanting for champagne.
One breakfast was at Café Cortez (free with hotel offer). One dinner was at the Four Kegs. We had seen this place on the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”. Their specialty is Stromboli and it was delicious. It’s about 5 miles from downtown, and easy to get to. We had breakfast one morning at DuPars at the Golden Gate (food comp mailer), and one nice dinner at the Flame at the El Cortez. We used two ACG coupons and a free wine coupon that we received on check-in. I had the porterhouse and a Caeser salad. My wife had the filet and baked onion soup. We shared the baked potato. Bill was around $80 before coupons. It was $17 after deductions and I paid with points and left a nice tip. If you dine at the Flame they give you a card good for two drinks at the new bar.
Gambling
I mainly play blackjack with a few slots mixed in. My wife is strictly a slot player. She was however interested in playing some Bingo at Red Rock, so I joined her for the 2 sessions she played. She won $50 one session and $100 in the other so I think she’ll want to do this more often. It was an interesting way to pass time as they play 13 games in just under an hour. The electronic devices that monitor the cards are cool. When you are one number away it beeps. When you have a bingo it plays “You’re in the Money”. All the guess work is taken out of it…lol.
My wife hit a progressive on a penny Quick Hit machine at the El Cortez on Friday that had a max bet of 60 cents a spin. Her hit was for $960. Unfortunately her slot and bingo wins would have to carry us for most of the weekend. I could not get any traction on the tables and was taking quite a beating until Monday morning the day we were leaving.
We had checked out of Red Rock and headed closer to the airport, so we settled in at the Orleans. I bought in at a double deck pitch game for $100 and went on a heater. The dealer was hot except to me and players left one after one. Only the player at 1st base and I at 3rd base remained. I was up a few hundred when I started pressing my bets. I had my wagers up to $100 when I won 9 hands in a row. I tipped the dealer handsomely and colored out at $1300 for a $1200 win. We had to head out to the airport, so this was a nice way to leave.
Recap
After paying for everything with cash or points, except the airfare and rental car, when we tallied up our collective bankroll we finished up $1 ahead. I’ll gladly take that after the early beat downs I had endured. It took that nice run at the Orleans to help us leave on top, even if by the slimmest margin. The last few trips have been family events with sometimes up to 14 people. This was a nice trip for just my wife and I and we really liked the freedom that this afforded us to come and go as we pleased.
Oh and I almost forgot. On Sunday evening as we were headed back from the El Cortez and our dinner atthe Flame to Red Rock, I was stopped by a Nevada State Trooper. You guessed it. He stopped us because of a no license tag on the car. We directed him to the decal on the windshield from the Nevada DMV stating the tag had been applied for and he looked over our rental agreement and let us on our way with a brief admonsihment about not taking a car without a plate. Upon my return home, I wrote a note to Dollar explaining the experience. I'm interested in their response.
