Reservations

March 12, 2011
I made reservations at New York New York before Christmas asking for
1. two rooms that were joined
2. strip view
3. smoking rooms.

We stayed the first two nights downtown and on the day of the move (March 8, 2011) I called because it was early to see if by chance the rooms were ready. I was informed that we could come on down, sorta' like the price is right, but that they didn't have any rooms available that were joined, were smoking or had a strip view. I am totally confused as to why anyone would make a reservation. There was no coupons, half price or any other incentive to go there so why not honor the reservation? As a result, I cancelled the reservations and we found ourselves homeless in Vegas. I then called Tropicana. The reservation desk was very accomodating and gave us exactly what I had ask for from Ny Ny. Everyone from the bellman to housekeeping, to the bartenders, to maintenance folks were extremely helpful and friendly. We did not spend any time or money in NY NY and probably will not on any future trip.
What is so hard about honoring reservations?
I think they just wanted you there to spend your money in the Casino until a room was ready for you.
You had three distinct requests on the one reservation, which makes it tougher. This is one reason confirmations state that specific room types requested at reservation time can't be guaranteed at checkin. They don't do things like this to piss us off. Believe me, after working with the public for 40 years, it's much easier to give them what they want than not. It's also possible that asking to speak with a manager would have produced a better outcome or maybe even an upgrade that fit your request. Never hurts to ask.

Good Luck!

All I can say is Wow to what happened to you at NY-NY and yes, maybe you should have attempted to speak to a manager instead since you made reservations over 2 months previously!

Hotels have a booking policy and proceedure much like the airlines. Based on past years reservations, what conventions are in town and how current bookings are going they book rooms.

They over book between 3 to 20 percent based on history.

They can not guarnantee the exact request as many people doublebook, are late on checkin, noshows, and other reasons.

When you show up you are really placed in what you want , if available. Just as when you called the other hotel, they knew they had a live intown customer who would checkin. They could then imediately choose what is available from inventory.

Your credit card guarnatees the room. In most cases a noshow will be billed one night and the remainder of the reservation cancelled.

Its just the hotel business.

Note: Some hotels like Hilton and Marriott will really book their best frequest staying customers and keep the room available even if they are late, or no shows and usually not charge the one night fee for these customers.

Casino/Hotels have Hosts who keep a block of rooms available, even if later not sold, for higher tier casino customers. Its best to use a Host at a casino if you "rate" as a player.
You are very lucky. Who would want to stay at NY NY anyway.
Way to go! Glad you were able to find rooms you requested at Trop. Sounds like they are working hard to attract customers since the remodel.

I totally agree. Although I've never stayed at NYNY, their casino sucks. The sportsbook is a joke. There is not one single casino bar where someone can relax with a cocktail and play some VP. They used to have the Big Apple Bar, where you could have a cocktail and listen to some decent music, but they did away with it. To me, nothing appealing about NYNY.

So dandphil, where is the trip report?
