We just got back from a quick trip to Tunica, two nights at Sam’s Town. Fun trip, although Lady Luck wasn’t on our side, in many ways.
Nasty weather; it was in the 20s and 30s while we were there, rainy the first day, then all hell broke loose, first some snow flurries, then a lot of sleet, then freezing rain. We rented a car in Memphis (the only practical way to get down there), and it was encased in a sheet of ice when we left on Tuesday, some of the windows stayed frozen until Memphis. Problems de-icing the plane in Memphis (who would figure?), so we missed our connection in Atlanta, got in late, so I got to work with 4 hours of sleep under my belt today.
Sam’s Town is a nice place, wasn’t crowded at all when we were there. Nice rooms, comparable to other Boyd properties, fridge and single-cup coffee maker were handy. Huge hotel, really. Everyone very friendly and helpful. Didn’t make it to the pool and hot-tub; sleet does that to you.
Nice, friendly casino. Almost all of the VP on the second floor has 9/6 JoB loaded, for quarters to dollars; no other good VP in the joint (thought about going up to the Roadhouse, never got around to it). BJ was $25 SD, only about 26 cards pen although it’s discretionary by the dealer, no slot for the cut card in the discard tray. We played a bunch of $10 DD, H17, DAS; cut card discretionary again but never more than about 55 or 60 cards. They also have $5 shoe and CSM games.
As I said, we could have been luckier; Linda (wife) had a few okay blackjack sessions but had one killer, lost 12 hands in a row head-up and got stuck for $130 in 3 minutes. Came back later, though, and she did get a straight flush on her first VP session. I had a rough time with the VP, played mostly dollars, total about $7K coin-in, and NO quads until the last evening, when I got three in about 12 hands, cashed out $300 ahead. So, I’ll save the other tail of the bell curve for Vegas in March.
Food was okay, not great. We ate at Twains, the steakhouse. Nice service but mostly forgettable food. The French onion soup was very good, nothing else really did it for us. Ate at the buffet the second night, also kind of lackluster. Was really looking forward to the Corky’s BBQ (Karen has had me drooling over the thought for years), but it seemed to lose a lot in the translation (or the steam table). For what it’s worth, I did have a pulled pork sandwich at the Corky’s outlet at the airport, and that was a good sandwich.
We did go over to Resorts and Hollywood to look around. Resorts was kind of nondescript, did have a $3 shoe game and I got $10 FP for signing up. Hollywood was a cool casino, big and industrial-looking, kind of like the E-Can with Hollywood props. Nothing playable there and no sign-up bonuses, but we were very surprised with their buffet. We had an ACG coupon but were skeptical, I hadn’t heard good things. We went around 10:20am so had breakfast and lunch. Not gourmet food, but all very good, fresh, solidly prepared food. I would absolutely go there again.
So overall, a fun trip. As has been said elsewhere, there’s nothing at all to do in Tunica but gamble. Honestly, between the airfare and the car rental, I think I’d rather do Vegas. Or occasionally Biloxi, if the Beau Rivage continues their cheapo air packages. Thanks for reading!
