Summer 2012 – Day 12
I was obviously tired because I slept for 10 hours. After finishing the all the morning routines and writing and sending out the trip report, I didn’t get out of the room until 10:30 AM. As I walked through the casino, there was a massive line at the buffet (I took a pic but it was too blurred to send out). I wondered why it was so crowded considering the buffet didn’t open until 11. I was heading for the parking garage when I noticed the sign that said Mondays were Senior Days with drawings all day and the buffet is only $5 for those 55+. Oh…give a discount to seniors and just like a rock concert, they’ll stand in line as long as it takes.
This was one of those days that I got into my car and started driving with no clear destination to go. I hadn’t had breakfast yet and checked my notes because I recall reading a trip report where one the LVA members talked about a great place for breakfast called Irene’s. I wrote into my notes just for this reason. The writer said it was close to the Palms, so I drove to Flamingo. I couldn’t find it and checked the Internet on my phone. The closest Irene’s, according to the map, was on W. Tropicana and Jones St. I drove over there, and I found Irene’s but this was no breakfast café, it was a bar. Having given up, there was also a Subway a couple of stores down. I asked the girl for the ham and egg breakfast on flat bread. It was surprisingly good.

Irene's on W. Tropicana...no...they don't serve ham and eggs
I drove down Sahara and decided to drop into Palace Station. For some time they were sending me free rooms and tournament offers. I gave them what I feel was some decent play, but the offers turned to tournaments and rooms for $22 per night. So, my relationship with Palace Station ended. However, I thought I’d drop in to play some live poker. They have a 2/4 with half kill game there that’s pretty laid back. When I went into the poker room, the table was full and there were four people on the waiting list, so I gave up and played a few machines. Things didn’t go well and I end up leaving down despite putting on almost 2000 points playing 8/5 bonus poker. I could only catch one quad, but the full houses and flushes kept me alive for a long time.
I was going to head over to one of places that was featured on “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” called Lola’s Louisiana Cuisine. As I made my left of Sahara, the Stratosphere was in front of me and I thought I’d drop in to see what, if anything has been changed. The casino looked pretty good though there weren’t many people playing. I played a couple of machines not having any luck when I saw a couple of the new Lord of the Ring machines I had some luck with before. I sat down and began playing one of them and wasn’t getting much so I moved over to the next one. I played on this for a good hour and a half on $20. I was down to $6 when I hit one bonus that was good for $18 (35-cents per bet), and not long after, I caught a win for $86. I was able to get out of there with my $100 back that I had lost for the day. I’m in a strange stage right now where most my losses are coming from video poker and most of my winnings on the penny machines…not a good recipe for any length of time.

I finally made it over to Lola’s. It’s an odd location just off Charleston and parking’s at the far end. Lola’s famous for its authentic Louisiana food. The place was pretty busy. I didn’t bother to stay as I simply wasn’t in the mood for anything spicy nor did I want a large meal. My next place to check out featured on “Diner’s, Drive-ins, and Dives” was Bachi Burger. This is a gourmet burger place and has a “famous” dish of oxtail chili-cheese fries. I found it and was surprised that it was on the end of a strip mall behind a Subway. The interior was very simple with some basic wooden tables and chairs.

The menu surprised me. The prices were pretty high. Burgers ala carte started at $8 and went as high as $25. Even the iced tea was $3 a glass. I had intended to just try the chili-cheese fries, which come with a sunny-side-up egg on the top (yea, I know). However, I simply didn’t feel like it and I thought my expanding waistline would be happier as well. I chose the Kiki burger that was $9. Even with four cooks in the kitchen, my burger took 35 minutes to be prepared. I was a little perturbed when it finally did arrive, but after taking a bite, I had to admit it was simply the best hamburger I’ve ever tasted. I can’t imagine what the $25 burger would be like. When the waiter brought me the bill, it was for $28.85. I called him back over and asked if I was given the expensive hamburger, but he apologized for the mistake and brought me the right price of $14. (burger 4 forks; service 2)

Sorry, I mushed up the burger cutting it in half. It actually looked great when I got it.
I stopped by the store to pick up some juice for tomorrow morning and then headed back to the hotel. So, there wasn’t a lot to write about today. The gambling was a bit of a wash, I did check off a couple of places on my “to do” list, and I had a great hamburger. The trip to Las Vegas this time around was a short one. The weather was nice today and the temp got as high as 102, but overall a very pleasant day. When I got to the hotel, I hung out at the pool for a while (not to swim, just to sit back and relax) and finally went back to the room. It’s back to Laughlin in the morning.
