Summer 2012 – Day 2
Though I go to sleep very early, I wake up at 1:30 AM with a pain in my chest. Oh my God, I’m having a heart attack! Wait a minute, it’s a slight pain, there’s no numbness in my left shoulder…maybe it’s the hot pastrami. Yea, that’s it. Okay. No more spicy at night. I watch a little TV and finally wake up at around 9 AM. I put on the coffee, and begin writing the trip report. It’s been a while and I’m a little rusty. I purchase the Internet from the hotel ($8.95 per day) as I don’t want to go out in this heat. The library has no covered parking. After uploading the pictures and sending them over to photobucket, I get on the different boards to send the report (LVA, email to personal friends, LVAdvice, and Facebook). Dang it, I see that the pictures are way too large on the web page. I make the adjustment in my camera, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
I took a moment to wander in the Watchman shop. This place makes national news everytime there's a day light saving time as they have extra people come in a change every one of the 10,000+ watches and clocks.

Entrance to Watchman's in the corner of the Riverside.
All of this and the other morning necessities, I’m not out of my room until 10:30. I’m hoping they’re still serving breakfast in the buffet. I have a different take on breakfast buffets that some of the posters here. I take a little handful of vitamins and a prescription pill every morning, and I like to down them with orange juice. Now, I could go to the coffee shop, but they’re famous for charging silly money for orange juice ($2.50 - $4.50 per glass). At the buffet, you get as much orange juice as you want along with coffee…and oh yes, all the food you can eat. Most breakfast buffets are pretty much the same. It’s hard to mess up, though Terribles in Las Vegas manages to do just that (it should be shut down). I’ve never had the buffet here and was not disappointed. For $8.95 (a little high I think) the Riverside has an omelet station with a talkative, friendly chef. They have all the breakfast basics. The view from the buffet is terrific with the Colorado River just outside the windows. (2 ½ forks)

The buffet at the Riverside

Get a table by the window in the buffet. Excellent way to spend the morning over coffee
On the third floor of the Riverside is a free classic auto show. They also have a smaller on at the street level, but this is where they keep their best cars. Many of these are for sale and all of them can be driven away. It was a nice time to just walk and enjoy.

Entrance to car exhibit

A favorite of mine

For my older brother, Butch, who really did have a woodie and played hookie to go surfing in the 60s

View from the car exhibit of the Aquarius. I believe the best place to stay in Laughlin.
Today was a rough one in the gambling department. It started when I returned to my favorite Quick Quad machines. I did get some good play in, but I just couldn’t get enough quads to keep me afloat, and for the first time I lost my hundred. I broke even on a couple of penny machines, Spartacus and a new game called Buffalo Moon. I finally decided I needed to leave the hotel and I drove over to the Edgewater, so I could park in covered parking. In the Edgewater, I played a Timberwolf game and one a couple of bucks, and then walked over to the Colorado Belle for some live poker. There was few to no one outside. No surprise as it was 108 degrees.

In the fall, this area is swarming with people. Today...too hot!
It was a miserable day on poker. I bought in for $100 and played for almost two hours. I won exactly one hand. I was never dealt an Ace and was only dealt one pair the entire time. The pair turned into a full house and that was my only pot. I was fortunate to get out with just a $50 loss. I really do enjoy playing live poker and with the 2/4 game, you can play for hours and hours and not lose or win much. This game is strictly for the weekend players as you’ll never get rich at this game. But I play for the entertainment. It was simply a dead card day for me. I’ll play more later in the trip.
The one bank of full pay 5/10/25 bonus poker machines that used to be in front of the poker room has been moved over by the micro-brewery. I played the $50 I took out of the poker room and…lost that as well. Tough day at the games.
The Colorado Belle, the Edgewater, and the Riverside were all slow today. It might be the heat, but I’ve been coming to Laughlin for years and I don’t remember the casinos being this empty before. I’m sure with the Fourth of July coming up in a couple days, things will change. I drove across the street to pick up a sandwich from Subway and take it back to the room.
Not really much more to report today as I’m going to call it a night early again as I’m going to leave for Vegas early in the morning.
More tomorrow
