Summer 2012 – Day 30
This morning I got up early so that I could get my things packed on into my car that was in valet. After I picked up the car, I drove around to the back and parked in the garage. I did this because I wanted to play at the hotel today and if I was on a good run, I didn’t want to have to stop and go check out of my room. Today, the Suncoast is offering 11X points of slots and 7X points on video poker. This is an excellent promotion and when you add to this the huge progressive for a dealt royal (now at $12,350) on the 5-play nickel video poker, I knew I had to give it a shot.
I was surprised to find that no one was at the bank. I made my choice and put in a hundred and once again, my game of choice Bonus Aces. Things started out great when after only $15 in, I hit the Aces for a hundred. I cashed that out and put in a new hundred. That got down to the teens when I caught the Aces again. I finally lost that, so at least I broke even on the game. I walked over to bar and ordered a diet Pepsi because the sportsbook bar is the only place here that has 9/6 Bonus Deluxe video poker. If you’re not familiar with this game, the thing that sets it apart is that any quad pays $100. This game is a favorite but it’s hard to find it in the full pay 9/6 variety. It wasn’t long before I hit quad jacks. I put in another hundred and things didn’t go so well, so at $50, I switched to 8/5 Bonus. Of course, shortly after doing that I hit quad 5s. I end up breaking even on this game. I was tired of playing and took a break to get an orange juice from the gift shop for my vitamins.
I played a variety of penny games, including a new Jaws game that has four or five different kinds of bonuses, however, none of them really pay all that well, and I left that. I even sat down for a little while at an old-school Triple Diamond slot machine for quarters. I broke even on this game and headed back to the nickel 5-plays. Now there were some people playing but I got on a machine on the end. Twice I was dealt four-to-the-royal (one card away from a 12K win) and I didn’t catch any royals at all. I didn’t to very well this time around a lost a hundred. I finally had enough and raised the white flag. I put on over 3000 points on my card and with the multiplier, even with my $50 loss for the session should be equaled out in comps.
I got into the car and headed for Henderson. It was almost noon and I still hadn’t posted yesterday’s trip report. I found a Burger King and they have Wi-Fi, so I bought some lunch and got online. The problem was that it didn’t work. Even though my computer showed it was excellent range, neither of my browsers worked. After lunch and packing everything back up, I drove to the end of the block to a Starbucks. I managed to get everything posted and I finally made it over to Sam’s Town.
They checked me in to the hotel, but my room wasn’t ready and asked me to come back in an hour or so to pick up my keys. I went upstairs and sat down at the progressive 9/6 Jacks or Better quarter machine. Things were going fine when a couple walked up to me and asked if I was the guy who wrote the trip reports. Ellen and Jim, though not LVA members, follow along on the free side and recognized me from the picture. We chatted for a moment and they mentioned that they are going to be having dinner at the buffet as it’s seafood night. I invited myself along (I tend to do that) so that we could have some more time to get to know one another. Besides, I had a $10 food coupon that came along with my comped room. We agreed to meet at 4 PM.

I got checked into my room. Last weekend, I had room 356, this time I have room 856, so instead of the atrium mountain in from of my, this time I’ve over it. Once again, the rooms here have been remodeled and are much nicer than before. After hanging around the room for an hour or so, I headed down to play at the bank of full pay deuces. After winning and losing and winning and losing, I finally left with a tiny profit of $7.50. I went to the buffet where Ellen and Jim were holding a place in line for me.
This is the first time I’ve had Sam’s Town seafood buffet. The crab legs were steamed and warm. Both Ellen and I had heaping plates of the legs, while Jim went for the prime rib. The food was good. There are plenty of assorted seafood dishes, and though I’ve always considered Sam’s Town an average buffet, for the money this is a good meal (3 forks). Ellen and Jim, like me, are retired teachers from Illinois (though as middle school teachers they worked far harder than I ever did), and own a small place here that they visit every few months or so staying here and in Illinois where their daughter and grandkids live. Ellen taught math and Jim social studies. We exchanged teacher war stories and had a very pleasant time. They requested not to have their picture taken for this report, but they are a very nice friendly couple. I’m sure our paths will cross again someday.
I honestly didn’t feel like gambling anymore today and so I headed up to my room to hang out and watch the Olympics. I won’t be gambling tomorrow at all as Sam’s is having a similar promotion on Sunday that the Suncoast had today. Every Sunday in August, Sam’s is having multiple point days with 11X doe slots and 7X for video poker. So, I’ll do all my play then. A rather short report today, but that’s understandable considering I spent most of it at the machines.
More tomorrow.
