Summer 2012 - Day 31

Summer 2012 – Day 31

Yes, day 31—how fast has this trip gone? I must have been pretty tired because I fell asleep at 9 PM, and even the 10 PM atrium show didn’t wake me up. After sleeping almost 9 hours I finally got up and turned on the Olympics. It was the girls’ gold medal tennis round, but I had to turn the channel. I just can’t stand listening to the grunting. The players claim it helps them put more energy into the shot, I say it’s just bad coaching. Either way, it drives me nuts.

I neglected to mention it but about five days ago, I found my book that I assumed
I left in a room. It had fallen out of my carry-on bag and found its way under the seat of my car. I was glad to have been able to finish it though THE LAST WIFE OF HENRY THE VIII will not go down as a favorite (2 ½ stars). I’m now working on the latest Anne Rice series of books about angles, this called ANGEL TIME. As I have plenty of time this morning, I was able to knock out a few chapters.

A fast note to RAMBLER: Yes, the new Linq project from Harrahs goes all the way back to the end of the block. They’re going to put in a dining and observation Ferris wheel, much like the one we are currently seeing in London at the Olympics. Unfortunately for Harrahs (Caesars—I can’t quite get used to the new name), another Ferris wheel is being built across the street from Mandalay Bay and is far ahead in the race with the let-anchors already in place. I will grab a pic and share it in a couple of days as I’m headed back to the Strip for another tournament on Monday.

I don’t have a lot planned today other than a meeting with LVA members Jeannine and Sam for lunch at Sunset Station and then perhaps an afternoon movie. I got things straighten in the room and headed out. Sunset Station is located in Henderson and I can remember when they built this place and it stood out here completely alone. There were almost no other stores and only a two lane road in front of it. Times have certainly changed. I’ve stayed here many times but the comp rooms ended a few years ago.

I ran my slot card through the promo kiosk. Station casinos a run monthly promotion that you can get 6X points one day per month. So, I chose today as I wanted to go after that single line royal that has been avoiding me all trip long. I first played some triple deuces for dimes, and though I ran almost $2K through the machine I lost $50 having never caught the deuces. I’ve been at this group of machines for years, and I just can’t get that quad. I went over to the front of the buffet where I was going to have lunch with LVAers Jeannine and Sam (jpires). They were there waiting for me and with her being a President card holder was able to get us right past the long lines and were seated. Jeannie had been following my reports for years.

Jeannine and Sam

Sam and Jeannine moved to Las Vegas a year ago and are from Massachusetts. They now have a home in Henderson and are finding they really enjoy being here even recently joining a broche ball team. They’ve been married for over 40 years, both are retired. Jeannine was graphic designer and Sam worked for Sears for 30 years (I think I have that right). I found myself envious of Sam who has run 19 marathons in his life. We really enjoyed our lunch and visit. I look forward to seeing them again on future trips.

After lunch I wanted to try again to take a shot at those quarter single lines. Sunset Station video poker machines only have 7/5 Bonus Poker on the majority of them; however, I found a couple banks that were labeled Triple Bonus and Double Bonus on the glass, but had 8/5 Bonus Poker in them. I camped out here and took another shot for a Royal—or at least a cash out or two. The story was the same. Despite getting a long session and plenty of chances (dealt four-to-the-royal twice), I walked away a loser again. It’s hard to believe I haven’t gotten even one single line Royal in 31 days.

I walked over to the theaters and they were showing TOTAL RECALL at 3:30. I used my points to pay for the movie. It was full on action almost the entire movie. Sometimes the story was a bit hard to follow but watching Jessica Biel and Kate Beckensale go at in an all-out chick fight was worth the price of admission. (3 claps)

On the way home, I took Sunset to Boulevard instead of the freeway. I passed the Klondike casino and was curious because there were only one or two cars in the lot. I stopped to see if it had finally gone out of business. I had stopped here on my Hit ‘em All Nevada trip last year and there were a good amount of customers though certainly the type of clientele you’d expect from a place that advertises 10-cent roulette. I walked in and there was literally one customer sitting at the bar in the entire house. I didn’t make it two.

As I continued to drive, I followed the road and eventually ended up over at Boyd Stadium, home for the UNLV sports teams. It’s an odd location because the university is located many miles west on Maryland Ave.

The most elaborate Locksmith building you'll ever see.

I continued onto Tropicana and past a place I had never noticed before, so I made a U-turn and stopped in. It’s a recreation area for the local youths called Sky Zone and Skate Town. I stuck my head in to Sky Zone, and it’s basically a warehouse filled with every type of trampoline you can imagine. I wanted to get a picture, but I couldn’t get past the too-observant door person. I walked down to the other side of the building and inside the skate park was a huge area for skate boarders—and the place was jammed with kids of all ages doing all those moggles and olies and other skateboard tricks I have no clue about.

Skate Boarders heaven

I finally headed back to Sam’s Town, parked and made it back to my room around 6:30 PM. I got undressed and ready to sit and enjoy the Olympics when I realized I left my phone in my car. So, it was getting dressed again, and go back to retrieve it. As I get older, I get more absent minded. I don’t think I forget, I just start thinking about something and don’t think about anything else. The other morning I brushed my teeth, lathered up my face to shave, and then jumped into the shower, forgetting to actually shave. I’m just hoping I’ll always remember to put my pants on every morning before I walk out of the room.

More tomorrow.

Thanks for the report. I too, live in Massachusetts, and chatted with Jeannine for about a year before we actually met in person - in Las Vegas!!!! It's always nice to meet up with a fellow gambler. I am so glad you continue on with your trip and story, it will be sad when it ends.
Glad to hear your trip is still going well! I can't stand the women's tennis grunting (nearly a scream) either and wanted to mention I think this is more a distraction tactic against the other player. My son and I saw the pros play in Cincy last year and my son watched her warm up against her coach, a hard practice warm up at that. She never grunted once.

I left and went back to the hotel when she played, the grunting scream is even worse in person!

Jon:

I am really enjoying your daily reports - it is as if we are along for the journey! Thanks for all the comments and thoughts within your reports. You are a good, descriptive writer with a very personal touch.

This is Marlyn B. (Italian last name) - I met you at the Harrahs meet in Joliet IL two years ago. I am sure you have met so many LVA folks over the years it is difficult to remember us all. But we all remember you!

Jon,

I have enjoyed reading your reports for the past few years. Every year you have come up with a different angle that keeps them interesting and keeps us in suspense on what will happen next. For those of us that love Las Vegas and gambling, we get a chance to live a trip that we may or may not wish to be on. Definitely, many of us know what a drought of a single line royal can be.

Yes, you will forget many items as you get older. My husband went to lay in the sun; he had everything layed out and forgot to put on his bathing suit. Thus, he was on his lounge chair before he realized he still was only in his underwear.

Good Luck and keep in search of the royal and trips the readers get to participate in through your reports.

Thanks JMan for another nice report as well as for those photos!

It's definitely good to be able to meet up with fellow LVAers and I always look forward to reading about whatever may end up happening.
