Summer 2012 – Day 7
A night’s rest “on the road” is like a crap shoot. I throw the dice to see many hours I’ll get each night and anything from 2 to 12 can come up. Last night, it was double 5s. I’m not used to ten hours sleep, and it tends to screw me up for a couple of days. I’ve grown very used to averaging six or seven a night, but you just never know. I’m at least happy to feel pretty rested for the first time in a while. My mattress is a good one, and I know that many people like to take their own pillows with them when they travel, but honestly, I’d rather steal the one’s they have here.
After finishing and sending in the trip report, I got out of the room and downstairs by 10 AM. I needed to put some points on my card, so I played some video poker for a while. After I was down $50, I quit and headed over to play the first day of my tournament. I sat down at machine #2 and hit the button for ten minutes like everyone else. The lady on my right had three red, white, and blue 7s (the jackpot); and the man on my left had four. I had 0. As a matter of fact, I had the lowest score in my entire isle of 3200. There’s really no sense in going back for the second day, but if you miss a day, you’re likely not going to get anymore invites, so I’ll be there. Ed, on the other hand, had a very respectable 9K points and should be in the hunt with a similar score tomorrow.

It's 108 out there...you'll never find me out there.
I had a bit of an assignment today as a couple of readers have asked me to check out some things for them. So I headed out for the Tropicana in the hunt for a multi-line quarter bonus machine and to also check out the virtual machines in the center of the casino. The Tropicana used to be a regular stop for me in Laughlin. They had a great poker room and Martin and I used to play here every time we were in town and got to the point where both the help and the regulars knew us by name when we came in. However, they closed the poker room, then they took out their 8/5 bonus poker schedules, and pretty much lowered everything else. So, there’s little reason to come here anymore. They do, however, still have a great steak house where they offer a nice little lobster plate for $19.95.

I parked in the garage and walked in to the familiar smell of peppermint, which reminds of the scent they pipe into the Flamingo in Vegas as well. After looking around for bit, I did find a triple/5-play/10-play All Star poker machine that did have 8/5 Bonus poker for quarters. Here’s pic of it for you.

They do have a large assortment of virtual machines here as well. For those of you who followed last year’s Hit ‘em All Nevada reports, you might remember that many of the places I went into didn’t have any blackjack tables for me to make my $10 bet (last year I went into every casino in the state of Nevada and made a ten dollar bet at a table game where I could and kept a tally of the results), so I would play a virtual blackjack machine. I end up doing very well on them getting dealt a blackjack four or five times. Anyway, here at the Tropicana, not only do they have four virtual blackjack machines, they also have a three card poker machine, a Texas Hold ‘em machine, and a Let ‘em Ride virtual machine. Interestingly, all the games had customers playing them.
As is my custom, I wanted to put a few points on my card to keep it active. I found one of the Rock Around the Clock machines where the middle of it rotates during the bonus round. I stopped to play this one because the time on it (a clock) was already past the 30 mark and it’s guaranteed to go into the bonus at 60. I only played two rounds when it pushed right to the bonus. I won $15. It reset again at the same spot (it usually resets at 15). I kept playing and hit the bonus again and this time won $38.00. I cashed out.
I drove over to the Riverside to play some Quick Quads. However, I hadn’t eaten anything yet, so I picked up a slice of pizza and a soda and sat in the same place in the Sportsbook as I did before. Fortunately, the guys with FU t-shirts were nowhere to be found and I sat and enjoyed watching a couple of ball games. I finally made it down to the quick quads and this time decided to play 7/5 bonus poker. It turned out to be a good move as today the quads were good to me and I walked with a $50 profit. I’m up for the day.
It was already 5:30 (where does the day go?) and I was supposed to meet Ed for dinner at the buffet at Harrahs. We met at 6:00 PM. Tonight was steak night and we each had a thin piece of NY steak with mushrooms. It was excellent. We both made of point of not over-eating (something to easily do at these buffets). After dinner, I said I’d play some live poker with him. There was a waiting list and we walked over to the one nickel Super Times Pay machine in the non-smoking section. Ed played DDB and was doing well for a while, but the quads just didn’t materialize, so he finally quit. It was 7:30 and we were still on the waiting list. I told Ed I was going to play some VP for a bit and go to bed, so I removed my name from the waiting list and sat down at a 7/5 BP quarter machine. I did manage a few quads this time, but eventually still only managed to break even.
It was time to call it a night, head up to the room and write this report, which I’m doing now as I listen to Beatles Radio (www.beatlesradio.com) , which is a favorite site I like to listen to while typing. It’s all Beatle music with old interviews and great songs. If you’re a fan like I am, give it a listen.
More tomorrow.
