We woke up and Kim asked if I actually wanted to go down a little before we left to get revenge on the video poker machines. I told her a promise was a promise and let’s get on the road. We headed out and made a stop in Kingman, Az. It was time for one last stop at Inn-And-Out Burgers before we could no longer enjoy them. We were quickly on the road and I was lamenting being a little down rather than up for the trip. We entered New Mexico in the late afternoon and we decided we would stop at the Sky City for a break and to sign up for some player cards and free play. You got to spin a wheel on the kiosk when you signed up for a card. Kim got $20 and I got $5 in free play. We both got an additional $5 in free play since it was our birthday month.
While we were standing in line, we saw that they offered “Win Cards”. Most readers know that this promotion is where you pay a certain amount (in this case $20 then you get $30 in promotional chips that you can play at a table game till you lose.). We sit down and I was wondering if I was going to get my $20 back since I lost the first three hands we played. Kim was hitting and winning at the six deck black jack table. I started to win a few hands and I stopped when my chips ran out with a $20 win. Kim still had 3 of her chips and played on. She finally lost her last promotional chip with $53 in profits. We then played our free play with little excitement. I cashed out $9 up and Kim cashed out $30 up. Our short stop netted us a nice little profit of $112.
We were back on the road and stopped at the Pilot on the outside of Albequrque. While I was getting gas a younger guy approached me and asked if he had any money he could spare for dinner. He gave me a story about how their credit cards are full and he is trying to see his mom. I gave him $5 and he said thanks and walked off. He then came back and very nicely asked if there was any way would cover his room at Motel 6 for the night. His wife and baby were in the car and with that we just couldn’t turn him down. We drove down to the Motel 6 and paid for their room. They took our address and he said he would send us the money. As of early September we haven’t seen it, but really didn’t expect to see a reimbursement from them in the first place. We just figured it was the Christian thing to do since they had a baby. We decided to suck it up and drive on through the night. We made it back to home in Arkansas in the early afternoon.
Forgotten WSOP Moment:
I can’t remember the particular day we went to the Rio to watch a little of the main event. The day we went there were 36 players left in the tournament. We saw some open seats at the main table so we decided to sit down and watch. Daniel Negreanu was playing at the main table. There was one dude wearing a hoodie who got in a hand with Daniel. Daniel had raised preflop and hoodie guy called. Daniel made a continuation bet on the flop with hoodie guy calling. They both checked the turn then Daniel folded when hoodie bet on the river. Hoodie guy then went on to berate Daniel on his poor play. Daniel leaned back to get some water while hoodie was mouthing. I rolled my eyes in reference to him and Daniel smiled and gave me a wink. That was my close rub with fame for the trip.
Post Vegas Note:
I really wanted to stay longer, but we had bought tickets to see a long time ago to see “Air Supply” in Tunica, MS. We were home a day then headed to Tunica. We realized that we needed to put another 1500 points in Kim’s card before the end of July for her to keep her Sapphire card. There is really no playable nickel video poker at Sam’s Town in Tunica so I settled in for some single line quarter level 9-6 jacks or better. The first machine took my $20 bill with about 5 minutes of play. I moved to the next machine and put $100 in. About 5 minutes into play, I was dealt a heart flush with four of the cards being to the royal. I threw away the non-royal card and up popped the queen of hearts for an awesome $1000 royal flush. This is only my 3rd royal at the quarter level with two of them being at Sam’s Town Tunica.
We went on to the concert and enjoyed it very much. We were 4 rows back from the front and they put on a great show. We played a little the next day with no big wins, then headed home for a much needed rest.
Actual Vegas Notes:
• We spent 15 nights in Las Vegas and Laughlin for a total of $190. Since we are low rollers that felt pretty good to me.
• We seem to have become almost exclusive Boyd players. I like their promotions and I love the Orleans poker room.
• We only went on the strip once. We are seeing less and less reason to go down there and pay crazy prices for everything.
• It now hard to find free parking down town without going through the hassle of getting your ticket validated.
• Fremont Street is getting more and more panhandlers and sleaze on it. This use to be my favorite place to go, but I’m starting to change my view on that.
• I hate the thumping music and dancers at the downtown casinos. I hate the D for taking out their single nickel louses deuces nickel machine and eliminating the bank of quarter 8-5 bonus machines that gave you a free steak dinner for any four of a kind.
• Poker was nice to me this trip.
• Video poker was actually nice for a rare change.
• Kim ended up $488 down for the trip.
• I ended up $522 for the trip. So we netted a small win of $40 which beats the heck out of losing.
• I actually ended up $53 down playing video poker on the trip in spite of 5 royal flushes.
• I ended up ahead $426 on the trip playing live poker.
• Our next trip will be during the Christmas Break. Thank you all for reading.
