Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 10
The day started off well enough. After all the usual routine morning tasks, I was able to enjoy a couple of cups of coffee and began reading our book club’s latest title, C.S. Forster’s first in a series of HORNBLOWER novels, “Mr. Midshipman.” So far, I’m enjoying it.
Today is packing day, as I head out to Sam’s Town for two nights and then it’s right back here again for their Mystery Box promotion, which I’ll explain then. After breakfast, I went to check out and, as usual, asked them to use my reward points for the Internet, but she told me that because this was a back-to-back visit, they charged my credit card a couple of days ago when the first visit was over. I should have told them then. She did offer to try to credit the card and reverse it, but I said to just let it go. What with my car repair bill on it, what’s another $20 bucks? You might remember that I had complained a little when I first took the room that it had only once chair and everything was unplugged. What I didn’t mention was that after the first night, I realized that the shower wasn’t draining very well. I called Housekeeping and she said they’d put in a work order. Where I worked, you put in a work order and it might get done in a couple of weeks, if at all. However, the very next day, everything was fixed and running fine. So kudos to the staff here.
The drive to Las Vegas on the 95 was uneventful though it was 102 degrees (even at 10 in the morning) and I am now paranoid about checking my gauges every few seconds, especially when I am climbing a hill. Hopefully, I’ll get over that soon. The big test will be next week when I drive to Palm Springs, where the temps can easily reach to the high 100-teens.
I arrived at Sam’s Town at noon and took a chance checking in so early. Fortunately, they had ONE king non-smoking room available on the eight floor. The room is exactly like the rooms here have always been. The bed is a little stiff for my liking, and the furniture is still the same, though just fine. One nice thing is that they have finally changed all their old 19” tube TVs with a wall mounted HDTV. Very nice! Sam’s Town sends me two free nights every month along with a $10 dining credit.

After unpacking I headed down to see what’s changed here at Sam’s Town. It’s been quite a while since I’ve stayed here. Before my Diamond status with Caesars, Sam’s was my “home” casino because it was easy to get free rooms, and the VP was mostly full pay. However, since it was sold to the Boyd Corporation, things have changed. Gone are most of the full pay VP games; however, there is still a bank of full pay deuces (the machines continue to be very slow), but they’ve been moved to the back of the casino. There is one bank of 9/6 Jacks with a progressive upstairs and a few triple play 8/5 bonus poker games in front of the poker tables. Surprisingly, downstairs not far from the front doors are full pay 8/5 Aces Bonus machines for quarters. That’s about all I could fine. It’s obvious that the Buffalo penny machines are the most popular here as they are everywhere in all parts of the casino.

My room--nicer than the old days

In a surprise I came across the pool at Sam’s town. Why a surprise? I’ve been coming here off and on for about 15 years. I’ve never known that they have a pool here—not that I’d ever use it, but it was nice to know they have it.

Pool at Sam's Town--had not idea it was here
I watched a movie called FRANCIS HA, which is in black and white and about two friends and their connection and disconnection. It was an odd movie that was really just the life of this single dancer. I did play some video poker and lost a little and actually hit a Buffalo machine for a ten dollar profit. A rather uneventful day but tomorrow I’m going to go downtown to play the annual quarter save—explained in the next report.
More tomorrow
