Summer of Cal/Nev Day 11

Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 11

Got up pretty early today—4AM—I tried and tried to get back to sleep. It’s seems the more you try the worst it gets. So, finally gave up and turned on “Wake Up with the Wagner’s,” the local NBC news team. Very worrisome news about the weather coming up—as there are high temps reaching 116 this Friday, which means Palm Springs (where I’ll be) is going to be worse. Today, however, it was downright balmy as the skies were overcast most the day.

I had breakfast at the Fireside buffet here at Sam’s. It’s a good buffet, not great, and breakfast is only $5.99. You can’t buy an orange juice at Caesar’s Palace for that. I got there just as they opened so everything was fresh and hot.

I started the day taking a shot at the full pay Bonus Aces but failed (the gambling this trip, though admittedly light, has been abysmal). I then got my things together and headed downtown. Today I was going to play the quarters I’ve saved up since last summer. I’ve done this for years. I take all of my change at the end of the day and put it in a jar and when summer rolls around, I bring here to play in the machines. In the old days, I would only have to take out the pennies as there were still nickel and dime coin-machines. Those are all long gone. Even finding machines that take quarters is getting harder and harder to find.

Not as many as years past--but ya know...the times

I don’t count the quarters, I just play them all and then count whatever I won. Today, I parked at Main Street Station and walked over to the California to play their 9/6 Jacks or Better. Main Street does have the coin-fed Treasure Chest 8/5 bonus available, but I’ve played these the past couple of years and haven’t had much luck on them. Quarter by quarter, I fed into the game. When it was all done, I was disappointed that not only did I get one quad; I didn’t get one full house. I might as well have played the Treasure Chest games. However, I did catch a lot of two pairs and three-of-a-kinds. It was obvious I made more money than I put in. I cashed it in and had $112.50. At least it makes up for the losses on this morning Bonus Aces.

I walked along the Fremont Experience walking into each of the casinos and playing a $20 at various machines putting some points on all my club cards. I didn’t win or lose much. The new zip line being installed is going to be really tall, but I really think it hurts the look of the Fremont Experience. It’s not done yet, so I’ll hold judgment, but it’s pretty obtrusive right now.

It’s about 1 PM and I peered into the Heart Attack Grill, and I don’t know if there’s anything special going on, but the place was packed with a line to get in. I guess a lot of people need to stock up on those calories. I really like Freemont, but I wish they could do something about all the beggars. I was approached three times for money to say nothing of about five or six people in wheel chairs holding signs for a hand out. It really does become irritating after a while.

It was really nice outside so I walked around a lot and had a rice bowl for lunch. I’ve never seen this one: I’m eating my rice bowl at a table at the Fremont. There was a couple next to me and a man sitting alone next to them. The guy sat there and waited until it appeared they were done, and asked them if he could eat the rest of their food. They gave them their plates. Las Vegas has a half dozen or more places that feed and help the homeless. It seems to be a problem that keeps getting worse.

I headed back to Sam’s Town. I realize I didn’t do much this trip to Las Vegas and haven’t given you much for this trip report, but I’m returning here many times during this trip and I’ll be getting a lot more pics and information then. I’m simply trying to pace myself. To show how unobservant I can be, as I walked towards my room, I saw a few banks of coin-fed full pay machines in the table area of the casino…geez. They have a very nice movie complex here at Sam’s and though I had a choice to see some movies I haven’t seen yet, I chose to watch STAR TREK again. It’s a favorite and I always catch some things I missed the first time around.

After the movie I picked up some chicken nuggets and called it a night. Tomorrow I go BACK to Laughlin for their Mystery Box promotion, more on that later. But it also means “So You Think You Can Dance” night, one of my very favorite TV shows.

More tomorrow.

Thank you for the trip report. You write very informative and interesting trip reports. I like the coin drop machines at the California. It is a good excuse to save up quarters. I frequently play the video poker tournaments there. Playing the old coin drop machines is a fun way to wait for my round of play.
There does seem to be a lot of beggars on Fremont Street. Sometimes the signs are quite funny. One man had a sign "Need money to visit whorehouse". My late husband turned too sharp off a corner and tipped his electric scooter. Lots of homeless came over and helped pick John out of the street and right his scooter. They didn't ask for money for the help. Mary
Thanks Jon. I really enjoyed my daily dose of your reports!!
Thanks JMan for your Day 11 report and photos! I'm happy that you ended up with $112.50 from your Quarter play and maybe one day I'll return to Cal to play on some of the coin-dropping machines. But I do hate that I have to stop and count the coins to know how much $ I have.

I'm now off to read Day 12 to be caught up for now.

Hello Jon. I'd like to say thanks for doing what you do. I've been enjoying your reports for a few years now. I envy that you can do a ~2 month trip every year and can take your time doing it. I do my 5 day trip every year and need a vacation after the non stop indulgence for the 5 days.
On a side note, I've noted on these boards and VMB about the increased homeless/beggars downtown and on the strip. It is one of my least favorite things about Vegas. It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be a good solution to this problem.

Keep the reports coming and enjoy the rest of your trip.
Jon
I've enjoyed each day of your reports so far, and especially look forward to more Downtown. I was wondering how the expanded Zip Line would finally look when complete, and from your pic it seems to be an enormous tacky eye-sore in the middle of the Fremont Experience. But, I'll hold off judgment until it's complete and I see it for myself in August.

Thanks so much for writing. I've never been (and probably won't ever get) to most of the places you're writing about -- so it's grand traveling through your eyes! Have you throught of publishing a travel journal?

Enjoy and continued safe travels!
