Summer of Cal/Nev Day 2

Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 2

Now that the first day is out of the way, it’s time to deal with the routine. I make sure that I either write my room number in my cell phone or take a picture of the number on the door. When you’re changing rooms every two days or so for a couple of months, it’s very easy to go to wrong room…you know, the number of the room you were in last night, or the night last week…all the room numbers just a melt together after awhile.

Harrahs in Laughlin has a specific smell, or aroma, if you please when you walk into the door and it’s been there every time for years and years. It’s the mint fragrance you smell at the Flamingo or even the apple scent that wafts throughout the Rainbow in Henderson. No, the smell here is of cinnamon rolls. There’s a Cinnabun franchise down by the North Tower and the scent permeates throughout the entire casino. For those on diets or diabetic, it’s the smell of evil, for others, it can almost be hypnotic.
Gambling wise, Laughlin sits right along with the Vegas Caesars hotels. 9/7 DB is your best bet, then 7/5 Bonus. When I play, I go after the 50-play 8/5 Super Double Bonus, which is a streaky game, but I’ve had the best luck with it. Even the high limit area has no full pay schedules on anything. Also, Ugly Deuces can be found on the 3/5 play machines in the smoking casino against wall at the pool entrance.

Someone asked if I took a pic of the vitamin haul for this trip...here ya go...

The plan today is to meet Martin and my parents at the Riverside at 10 AM for the breakfast buffet (I believe I mentioned that my comp package included two free breakfast buffets and two free Prime Rib dinners). So, this morning we’re using those coupons. We were giving a nice table with a river view. And while my dad and I each had omelets, Martin enjoyed the prepared omelet with most the breakfast meats. My mother had a donut morning…don’t say it…my mother is at the age she can have any damn thing she wants, thank you. For the price of a tip, it was good start to the day. We said goodbye to my parents and agreed to meet tonight at 5:00 PM for the Prime Rib dinner.

Mom and Pop with Martin...I so sorry the picture is so dark...background was too bright

Martin and I sat down at the bank of Quick Quad machines. I put in a hundred to play the nickel five-play Bonus poker and Martin put in $25 and played the triple play Bonus poker. Things started off beautifully for me ballooning my total to $178 and then, as these things do, the machine went dead cold. After about a half hour later, I was out. Martin, on the other hand, did quite well and doubled his investment. Overall on these machines, I’ve done quite well, so the occasional loss is to be expected.

We walked up to the theaters as THE INTERNSHIP was going to begin. This is the movie with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. We both really liked it. The writing was great and though it has a very predictable plot, Vince and Owen make a great team. This is a good popcorn flick.

After the movie, I headed back to Harrahs and Martin went back for a nap. I picked up the tickets to Jeff Dunham, which turned out to be a nice comp as they were selling for $73 each. I’m not thrilled with the seats, but free is always free.

Martin came to my room at 7:30 and we headed for the concert. The line to get in was insane. The show was sold out and the start was delayed 15 minutes to get everyone in the stadium. It was a great show. Jeff had A LOT to say about Laughlin…not of it flattering. Last night he played the Coliseum at Caesar’s Palace, and tonight…outside in 105 degrees. He had fun with that all night long.

I’m sorry the pictures came out a little blurry, but I took them from my seat with the zoom all the way. You can see some of his clips at this link:

The show was a little over an hour and a half and we bolted out of there. Martin headed back to his hotel and I came up to my room to finish this report and get out before going to bed while my 24-Internet is still in effect.

I’m checking out a day early tomorrow as I head to the Stratosphere.

More tomorrow

Thanks, JMan for your Day 2 report and I'm sure that Jeff Dunam really had some stuff to say about the 105 Degree Heat that he had to play in. And it's too bad that the returns on VIdeo Poker have been downgraded!

Looking forward to reading your continuing adventures!

Thank you for day 2. Your reports are one of the highlights of my summer!!!! I can't imagine a summer without watching for your daily posts.
Thanks Jon.I see you gut your picture problem straightened out.No html alongside each pic.

Jon: Thanks for the report. All those containers of capsules though? Reminded me of the cart that Nurse _____ (played by Louise FLetcher) used to push around in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest! I only reference that because I know you're an old guy like me.

I earned my DIAD at Harrahs's Laughlin about six years ago playing those 50 play machines that you recommended back then and I have been a relatively happy Diamond Player ever since. The offers I got IMMEDIATELY were fantastic. A host was assigned to me and the first time I came back in, they put me up in this beautiful two room suite that had individual peoples name on the door.

But, my play of 10-11K per day was not what they were expecting and the offers diminished as did the quality of the rooms. It didn't help that I had a pretty good lucky streak at that time and I was a video poker player instead of a slot player. All of a sudden, my host was the Host On Duty.

Laughlin is a different feel...an older crowd but I really like it. Sitting outside at the Diamond Lounge looking over the river is very nice. I get the offer for free flights over from Northern California but honestly, I would rather spend my time in Vegas where I feel there is a lot more diversity. As a result, I haven't been back in a couple of years. I am just starting to get some better "We want you back" offers so I may do so before too long.

I have been to the concert venue for three concerts including Willie Nelson and I really like it there. Luckily, the temperature has not been too bad (one time there were threatening showers) but I would recommend it ESPECIALLY if it was free.

Thanks again for the report and keep up the great pictures!

Really interesting report and love the picture of your parents and Martin. Your parents look like they are really enjoying their retirement years. I wish I lived within driving distance of Las Vegas and Laughlin. I'd be there all the time!
Your vitamin pictures made me spew my coffee
Can't wait for the rest of the report.
Safe travels.
Where's the 81 mg aspirin? I think I see the fish oil soft gels though - LOL! Enjoying the reports, Jon! Thanks for being so faithful to us each summer!
