Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 31
Today is Sunday. I say this because I understand that I made another error in yesterday’s report, which was Saturday. When one spends so many days in and out of casinos that run on and on and on, it’s easy to lose the day. There are a lot of times that I have to seriously have to think about what day it is—one of the small perks of working a Monday to Friday work week: you’re always aware of what day it is and how many more there are to go until the weekend.
Today I’m going to be joined by Martin, who is making the trek out here once again to Laughlin on an offer from the Edgewater, which boasts that it has just completed the remodeling of all the room in the Sedona Tower. He gave me a call at 9:30 saying he had arrived and was at the Colorado Belle to play some live poker; however, no one was there. Would I like to come join in for the game and he’d put my name on the list. I said that would be fine, but I wouldn’t get there until 10:30 or so because I have the second day of my slot tournament at 10. He said that was fine. I finished dressing and writing yesterday’s report (Saturday’s) and then made my way down to the tournament area. It was ten o’clock. The place was completely empty. What gives? I took out the slip with my machine number and read that today’s tournament doesn’t start until 11:00 AM. Great! I called Martin back and told him I wouldn’t be there until 11:30. Now I had an hour to kill, so I found one of the 9/6 Jacks or Better machines and put in a hundred. You know, it might as well have been a 6/5 Jacks or Better because if you don’t catch any full houses, the better machine is worthless. I did manage one four-of-a-kind, but that was it and lost my stake within 35 minutes…a record of sorts for me as I can usually last quite a while on these games, I can hardly remember the last time I got a single line Royal.
I eventually made it to the tournament at the right time and when the announcer said, “Go” I again pecked away at the machine for ten minutes. When the time was up I had 5475 points, worse than even yesterday’s dull result. My streak at winning nothing at slot tournaments remains intact. I will be back here in three days for another poker tournament, another one that I’ve never cashed in. But never give up, never say die!
I drove over to the Edgewater even though Martin is at the Colorado Belle because I want to be in covered parking. It’s a scorcher today peaking at 114.

The Edgewater Hotel and Casino in Laughlin
After walking through the Edgewater and over to the Colorado Belle to the poker room there was a spot open at the poker table and I bought in for my usual rack. I did manage a couple of wins, but I got killed by a few players that rivered me with caught flushes with large pots. It was one of those: if I had a straight, they had a flush; if I had a flush, then they had a full house. I did pull the plug this time after losing $60. The writing was on the wall.
Martin, on the other hand made some money today, first on the Aye, Caramba machine and then getting his Aces cracked for a $25 bonus. We both left the poker table and enjoyed a shrimp cocktail from the snack bar.
I was telling Martin while playing poker that I had to find a Hot Spot to send in the report but Harrah’s Internet is still down, and today being Sunday, the library is closed as well. The Starbucks in the Aquarius used to have free Wi-Fi, but they’re gone as well. I thought I might go across the river to a Burger King or McDonalds as sometimes they will have free Wi-Fi. As I pulled out of the parking lot of the Edgewater, it had just then occurred to me that there is free Internet at the Outlet Shopping Center in the food court. So, I pulled over there, parked in the garage, and set up the computer in the corner. It worked great and I was able to finally get the report out though pretty late.

The food court at the Outlet Mall in Laughlin. Only two food places left open...bad for the mall, good for them as they get all the business.
It’s with a very heavy heart that I now share this with you. I’m very sad to report that a good friend of mine’s passing, the Black and Decker coffee maker with the aluminum carafe has finally died. It’s been with me all over this country and in Canada. It’s seen me through some very tough mornings, and it’s always been so reliable. It was a good run…it will be missed.

R.I.P.
After sending the report out it was back to Target to get a new coffee maker. I was just there yesterday getting filters for this one (sniff). I went to the same teller and told her that I was the one who bought the coffee filters yesterday and thought it would be could idea to have something to use them with—I think she thought I was serious—not even a smile.
I went back to Harrahs to put everything in my room and then headed down to the Box Office as I have a coupon for two free tickets to the Dirk Arthur magic show, which I purposely put off until Martin came, so we could go together. The box office wasn’t open yet, but there was a sign with the hours on it and under that a message that read, “free coupons cannot be picked up the box office of promotions booth.” Huh? So, I went to the Rewards Center counter and asked the boothling what was up with that? She checked with her boss and came back saying to take it to the promotions booth but not to forget to call the 1-800 number for the reservations. Huh? As I walked out of the Rewards Center, I read the small print: You must make reservations 7 days prior to the show date. I have GOT to begin to read all the directions. Damn it! So Martin is meeting me at 5:00 for a buffet (I have a coupon for two free buffets—no small print on this one, thank you very much) and is expecting to go to the show after dinner. Sorry about that.
Martin came up to the room a half hour early, so we went down to the Diamond Lounge for a drink until dinner. Today, they had the usual ham and tuna salads but they also added large hot dogs, which were swimming in boiled water—will gladly wait until the buffet.
Dinner at the buffet was good—surprisingly the trout was good and moist—and Martin debated if he was going to go to a poker tournament or not. After dinner, we walked over to the tournament area to see if I somehow made the top 100 for a cash—I was close—235. Okay, not that close. I decided to stay at the hotel and call it a night. I’m packing and moving down the street to the Riverside for the next three nights and then right back here again for next poker tournament and that will end Laughlin for this summer—I won’t miss the heat.
More tomorrow.
