Summer of Cal/Nev Day 35

Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 35

This morning I really just goofed around and never got out of the room until 11 AM. The day was almost half over and I hadn’t done anything aside from some reading, watching TV, and just gawking at the view.

A few readers had some questions about the Jet Ski and so I thought rather than just write down the information, I’d just take pictures. So, I drove across the bridge into Bullhead and got some gas for the trip back to Vegas tomorrow and a picture of the pricing of the Jet Skis there. Then it was on to the Target (I prefer Target to Wal-Mart—cleaner, nicer staff) to get some underclothes and socks. Being that I was just a couple of blocks away, I drove over to the AVI (three times this trip seems just too much) and thought about a movie, but there was nothing there that interested me—TURBO has that same Disney cartoon story most of them do. So, I thought a fast five in the KENO and I’m out of there.

Today's Keno win at the AVI

Now before people start complaining of the short pay schedule, please understand that they do have a couple of machines with slightly higher paybacks, but THIS machine was a ticket in/ticket out machine, which meant I wasn’t going to be collecting $100 in nickels and carting it off to the cage—if that cost me five bucks—so be it. As you can see, sometimes I simply take the four cards and overlap the six numbers. I’ve done freakishly well on this game.

I cashed in my ticket and felt I could afford a $20 in this bank of Buffalo machines that are connected to a Train progressive (most the casinos have them). It’s the same game but instead of a 40-cent minimum bet, it’s a 55-cent per bet. However, it seems the progressive train game hits a lot, so I thought I’d give it a shot. I did play both progressive games and didn’t do all that well, but I also hit something like 9 or 10 buffalos, which was another $95 win. I cashed out and headed back to the parking lot—didn’t want to stretch my luck.

I drove back to the Edgewater to park in the covered parking (109 today) and grabbed my Edgewater card to play $5 through their KENO machine. I sat down and began playing when this really old lady (hunched over, very slowly pulling her chair out, slower even finding her five dollar bill and began playing DDB poker. On her very first hand, she held an off-suite Ace and Jack (in this game you’re not supposed to hold the Jack), and up popped three straight Aces. She then very slowly cashed out, took the ticket and walked away—one hand and out, baby!

I walked on over to the Colorado Belle but stopped to take a picture of the prices for their Jet Skis. As you can see, it’s smart to shop around. I don’t know how to put the pictures side-by-side (something my son needs to show me how to do—these kids and their technology).

The pricing at the Colorado Belle

The Faststrip price (it goes up to $99 all day on the weekends)

Just as you’re about to walk into the Colorado Belle, I stopped to look at the large metal bell just outside the entrance. It was made in 1911 (so it said on the engraving) but there was no plaque or anything giving reference as to why it was there.

This bell stands just outside the back entrance

It was about eight hours later that I it struck me: Bell…Colorado Belle…oh!

There was a poker tournament about to start, but my luck (or lack of skill) at poker tournaments have been rather poor lately, so I opted instead to go back to Harrahs and spend the rest of the day at the 50-plays hoping to add another 1000 points to my totals.

I altered my playing between Super Double Bonus and Bonus Deuces Unfortunately, I was only dealt three deuces once during Bonus Deuces and I was never dealt three Aces in Super Double, so the session was a bad one. I stopped after reaching only the 500 point threshold, but I was bleeding money, and I didn’t want to blow all the winnings I’ve had this week and could see the writing on the wall, so I called it a day.

I picked up a turkey wrap at the café and headed back to the room. I drive back to Las Vegas tomorrow and I want to leave early—yes they are expected thunderstorms throughout the day and for the rest of the week.

More tomorrow.
Thanks, JMan for that report!

As for the Video Keno, yes, a pay schedule of 3-4-68-1500 is definitely worse than one paying 3-4-75-1660, but I understand your not wanting to haul Nickels around! But I should also say that you were paid $8.70 less than you could have been ($8 less for the 6 out of 6 and $0.35 less each for the two 4 out of 6 hits that you got).

And yes, there could definitely be something about playing Video Keno with using Clusters (overlapping numbers). This is what my friend does when he plays.

As for that woman hitting and running, I can't say that hit and run is a bad strategy (even though her playing strategy leaves a whole lot to be desired)! It definitely is Disciplined!

Well, good going for the day and thanks for the great photos as well!

And as for Desert Rain, I don't care much for it and I have been in it over the years at different times of the year! So I wish you a safe drive whenever you may have to deal with it!

Thanks Jon, for todays installment! Nice keno hit once again. I love video keno and it's my game of choice in all the casinos.

I'm glad it's back to Vegas tomorrow. Laughlin is really fun, but only for a few days and then it gets to be kind of dull. It just doesn't have the energy that Vegas has.

I thought he mentioned 72 for hitting 5-of-6. If the 6-spot schedule is 3-4-72-1660, then the return should be 94%, which is probably near the best you'll find, ignoring progressives. IGT's brochure for its Game King Keno machines specifies an available payback range of 86.4% to 95.2%. Strategy is not a factor, if I understand the game correctly.

I'm not a keno enthusiast, but in general I would like to see more game options that speed up play, such as multi-play formats and turbo buttons. Faster games are more entertaining for the player, and more profitable for the casino.

I found that I wrote down directly from a machine a pay schedule of 3-4-75-1660, not 3-4-72-1660 that I found at Plaza and Las Vegas Club Casinos (I think that it's the same at El Cortez).

And as I further edited my above reply, by getting 68 coins instead of 75 and 1500 coins instead of 1660, he ended up getting paid $8.70 less than he would have with the same number of hits with the lower pay schedule.

Thanks. The increase from 72 to 75 adds about 1% to the return, increasing from 94% to 95%.

Slot club benefits can add substantially to the effective return, except probably a lot of keno games are classified in the video poker category rather than slots, which is not helpful at all.
