Summer of Cal/Nev Day 38

Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 38

It was packing day again. My overall impression of the Fremont after staying here for two nights for the first time is a mild thumbs up. The room was clean, nicely remodeled, but it was small and yes, the Fremont Experience and all the craziness can’t be avoided. But being right there in the middle of the action downtown and the very cheap prices for the rooms makes it an okay place to stay.

I picked up my car from the valet and headed to Starbucks once again to write and send in the report—pretty uneventful this time around. I’m checking into two hotels today as my friend Cindy, her daughter and boyfriend are arriving today for a four night stay. I’ll be staying once again at Main Street Station for one night along with Cindy and her daughter and boyfriend are staying at the Orleans on a freebie offer I get each month. To add to the party, my sister, mother, and father are coming into town and staying at the Orleans as well. Papa plays in a couple bowling tournaments at home and every year they come to a regional tournament here in Vegas.

I drove back downtown and I was able to check in but the room wouldn’t be ready for a couple more hours. I said that works out fine and that I’d be back around 4 to pick up the keys.

The weather is muggy today as it’s monsoon season, which I prefer to 120 degrees. It didn’t rain all that much last night and though there is a lot of cloud cover, it doesn’t appear there are any storms on the horizon. I had some time to kill before I could check into the Orleans, so I went into 777 Brewery at Main Street and sipped a beer while watching the Padres get beat up again by the Cardinals…again.

I finally headed over to the Orleans to check in and it was jammed—even more than usual. It turns out that in addition to the bowling tournament, there’s also a high school basketball tournament going on as well. The place is simply over run with old gray haired people and their bowling balls, and young tall skinny kids and their basketballs. There were long lines for everything. I finally got the keys to the room and went up to check it out quickly and then it was just a matter of waiting for everyone to arrive. I sat down and played the 8/5 Bonus Aces and just kept vacillating between $75 and a $115; never enough for a cash out. The call came that Cindy was arriving, so I cashed out a $25 loss and went to meet them at the valet.

They got all their bags and we headed up to the room only to find that that neither of the keys suddenly didn’t work—this after I had just checked the room less than an hour before. I called the front desk, who said they’d send someone up. We waited and waited until I finally had waited long enough and ran down to the front desk to get a couple of new keys. There was a very long line of people checking in, and I had no intention of waiting in line again, so as soon as one of a clerk was about to signal the next person in line, I flagged her down and then told the couple coming next that I was already checked in and just needed a new key. They were very understanding and I headed back up to the 10th floor with the new keys. Of course, as soon as I got back the guy comes down the hall to let us in the room. The new keys worked fine and we sent him away.

After dropping everything off in the room and the necessary potty breaks were done, I took everyone down to the casino to show them around. While doing that, I called my dad and they were in the valet line, so we headed over there to welcome them. We caught up a little and they got into line to register and we said our goodbyes for today as we’re going to meet up tomorrow for dinner.

Cindy and I headed downtown to check into the Main Street Station and the keys were ready. We were surprised to see that we were put in a handicapped room. It was okay (at least the bathroom is much larger) and we unpacked and hung out here for awhile before heading down to the Fremont Experience and to find a place for dinner. Cindy had never been here and I did warn her about the crazy people, but to just look at it as part of the interesting overall atmosphere.

We went into most of the casinos and she particularly enjoyed the Golden Gate with its history and the pool area at the Golden Nugget with its shark tank right in the pool. With all the selections available downtown, I told her that when our friends Terry and Louise are in town, they always stay at the Four Queens and we usually have a meal at the Chicago Brewing Company. So, we decided to have dinner there. We both had the turkey wrap, which was served with tortilla strips and we both agreed delicious.

We then walked down to the D and we went upstairs to show her the Horse Derby machine, which was packed with people yelling at the horses to come in on their ticket (yes, people yelling and encouraging mechanical horses as they circled a toy track). I showed her the machine with the 7s I had a small win with yesterday and we put in some money to see if lightning might strike twice. Cindy took over the punching of the deal button and hit a very nice triple white seven times three and we cashed out almost $30—see this gambling thing is easy.

By the time we got down to the end of the block where the Heart Attack Grill is located and turned around, it was beginning to get dark and the stages were coming alive with music. The girls at the D bar in the front, jumped up on the bar and began dancing to the music by Sam Riddle who’s country songs were great. He had an amazing backup band, so we stayed there for a while and listened to them.

We walked into the Fremont Hotel as I wanted to show her the Monster Hot Dogs they sell there and then the Pick ‘em machine that kicked my ass this trip. I wanted to show her the game so we sat down and I went through the rules and the strategy a bit. This time, Cindy brought some luck as I hit a couple of good flushes and we cashed out another $25 profit. Her luck didn’t last for long as we soon lost at Buffalo and Keno and finally called it a night pretty much breaking even.

More tomorrow.
