Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 42
Well, it’s moving day once again. I hate to leave this room at Ballys. I just look out at the view from the window and regret driving back to the land of Laughlin, but that’s the way it goes. We packed our things and headed down to the lobby where I needed to check out at the Diamond Registration as this is one of the very few times at a Caesar’s property, I actually have a balance. Two nights of Internet and the Marie and John Schneider show came to $338.00. I had all of this taken care of with my comps, and that was that.
We drove to Sam’s Town so we could meet Cindy’s daughter and boyfriend as they were all heading back to San Diego but with a stop at the Heart Attack Grill at the Fremont Experience and then a BBQ date in Victorville. We said our goodbyes, but not for long as Cindy will be joining me in Reno in about ten days. I headed for Laughlin but made a stop at Costco to fill up the tank.
Some have inquired about my gas and mileage. When I left my house, I set my speedometer at 0. So far I’ve traveled just about 2500 miles (the most driving is still ahead of me) and I’ve also been writing down (putting in my Iphone) the gas costs. To date: $426.
I’m going back to Laughlin because of a specific scheduling need. I knew that I needed to be in Las Vegas on July 29th for the MPT (Mattress Poker Tournament—more on that later), so this necessitated me finding rooms for five nights. I had my three night Riverside July offer, which came with two free Prime Rib dinners and two breakfast buffets, and I had an Orleans (yes, back there again) $99 slot tournament offer. So, I booked all those for the simple reason that I cannot miss the 7th Annual MPT in Las Vegas.
The drive to Laughlin was uneventful—no thunderstorms, no problems with my radiator—just the usual boredom of miles and miles of flat desert. I was able to check into the Riverside and I had asked if it was possible to get the room I had last time, 1064. She said it was booked and I said any room in the South Tower facing the river would be fine. She finally found me a room on the 7th floor. She thinks it’s because I want to look at the view—but the real reason is because I can pick up the Wi-Fi from Home Depot across the river. Who’d a thought they’d even offer free Wi-Fi at that store, but they do. This alone not only saves me $12 a night if I chose to purchase it here or at the least prevents me from having to pack up the laptop and drive over to the library to get each day’s report in. Unfortunately, the room wasn’t ready and the clerk told me to come back around 3 PM.

I'm running out of different angles to take of the Riverside
I sat down and played some Quick Quad poker for awhile and was down to my last hand when I was dealt four deuces (WHY can’t this happen when I’m playing the 50-plays) which brought almost all the way back, so I cashed out. I still had some time, so I walked up to the theater to see if there was anything good playing I could see to pass the time and R.I.P.D. with Jeff Bridges was showing, so I went to see that (coincidentally, Jeff Bridges is in town today as well as he’s playing with his band at a concert over at the Edgewater). The movie was a little silly and reminded me of Ghost Busters for some reason, but it was a good way to while away the summer heat with some popcorn and soda.
I took my things up to the room and it had just been finished. The Riverside really does need to remodel soon. The tube TVs and stiff mattresses have got to go. The doors at the Riverside are the heaviest doors I’ve ever encountered. It takes two hands and a shoulder to get them open—they’re all like this—made of solid something or other. So, here are the obligatory pictures of the room and the view.

Another nice view of the airport (yes, it's there), the river, and the mountains
It was brought to my attention that the picture of my family with me in it did not go through on LVA. You might assume that was by design, but it wasn’t. I’ll try to add it here.

Family at TGIF at the Orleans
I honestly didn’t feel like going anywhere, nor did I want to gamble any more today, so I called over to the Prime Rib room and asked if I could make a reservation. I headed over there and had their salmon (they’re Prime Rib is great—but not so great for me right now) along with some veggies and salad. I used my first of the two comps and went back to the room for an early night of just hanging out and watching the view outside; writing this report, and watching some TV—why not?
More tomorrow.
