Summer of Cal/Nev Day 5

Summer of Cal/Nev – Day 5

I woke up early and hung around the room for a while and then took a short walk around the retail floor and though everything was closed, it made for a good walk. I think I may have misspoke or misunderstood as a comment was made that why didn’t take the bunji jump being that it was free. What I meant was that when you’re a guest of the hotel, you get to go up to the tower (normally an $18 adult ticket—obscene)for free—not the bunji jump. I did talk to one of the elevator attendants and they said that an average of 100 people jump each day and in the summer time, that doubles…they’re making some money there.

I checked out of my room and thought I’d share just a couple of last thoughts about the Stratosphere. This place used to be a B-class hotel. The rooms were basic, the service was mediocre, and the food choices were few. However, I have to give them props. The rooms are now very nice and everything is well taken care of. I should also mention that I did find one bank of machines that had at least a playable game of video poker and you still got points. In front of the bathrooms where the craps tables are, there’s a bank of machines that have 8/5 bonus poker; however, this version has all the quads paying 150. This is a little worse than the full pay version, but at least playable. It’s unlikely that I’ll get any more comp rooms here but if I do, then I would have no qualms about returning.

After getting my car from the valet, I wanted to have breakfast, so I headed over to the Silver Sevens Hotel and Casino. If you’ve been out of the loop, this is what used to be Terribles on Paradise and Flamingo. I pulled into their covered parking and walked to the slot booth, which is now done at the registration desk. They, of course, gave me the new card and told me how many points I still have (14450—about $45 in comps). Today was Senior Day, so I slid the card in the kiosk and was given a 50% off any meal in the café as long as I paid with points, which is exactly what I had planned to do in the first place. The new club is called “The A Club.” I’m thinking they should re-consider that one.

I had a nice breakfast and headed downstairs to check out the newly remodeled sportsbook. They did a nice job with what little space they had. Also, the casino was redesigned and is much nicer with less clutter and more room to walk in the aisles. I wanted to put a couple of points on my card, so I played a couple of penny games, made a $5 profit and hit the road. I made a stop at Costco to fill up the tank in Henderson and then went over to Sunset Station. I have been trying to hit the deuces on their dime Triple Deuces machines for years but to no avail. Today was no different—lost. I also took a moment and put a couple of points on Martin’s card as per request.

As I got on Hwy 95 on my way back to Laughlin, the temperature outside was 104. For whatever reason, my car is running hotter than it’s supposed to. Now, before I left, as I always do before these summer trips, I have a bumper-to-bumper check of my car to be sure that everything is as it should be. I specifically told the mechanic that my car was running hotter lately than it ever has in the past. When I picked it up, he said he put in a new thermostat and everything else checked out fine. Well, it ain’t working. By the time I got to the solar fields, my car’s gage was leaning towards the red zone, so I pulled over and let it cool off (there’s a fan that stays on cooling the engine even with the car off). I then set out again, and once again had to stop and let it cool off. I reached Searchlight, and went into Terribles and really took some time slowly sipping down a light Coors—yes—for a dollar. I made it to Laughlin just fine, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to take it into the dealer in Henderson next week when I’m at Sam’s Town and have them take a look. Darn it! My poor little Saturn!

I checked into the hotel and they tried to put me into the North Tower. I told her, “I will not stay in the North Tower—ever!” She found a room for me in the Central tower, but it wasn’t ready, which was okay with me. I’m staying here for six nights, three of them on an offer for some glassware (I don’t care about the glassware, I just wanted the free nights) and then the next three nights are for a poker tournament (it only pays the top ten…fat chance).

I took the glassware to my car and brought all my stuff to the room after it was ready to go. Odd thing…I’ve stayed at Harrah’s, Laughlin now maybe 50 or 60 times and with the exception of the few times when they’ve give me a suite, the rooms are always the same. Well, this room I have today is missing a chair, missing one of the trashcans, and the lamps and the clock are all unplugged. What?

I went into the Diamond lounge for a drink and went through your comments from the previous trip reports and cleaned up some of my email and such. Then I sat down at the 2-cent 50 play. I did okay for a while even doubling my money. However, it was SO frustrating as I was dealt four-to-the-royal twice…and didn’t connect even one! That’s a hundred shots for one card…nada…nothin’…zilch! But all was not lost. I end up winning the money I had lost at Sunset and am going to bed even for the day and having put another 500 points on the card. It’s all good.

I picked up a turkey wrap at the café to take back to my room for dinner and now it’s time to just kick back and get ready for the next day.

More tomorrow

Thanks for the update of the Silver Sevens! I'll miss telling friends at home that I'm staying at Terribles in the future. They always laughed but I told them it was never terrible! It has a nice tropical pool area and a great little gift shop where everything is pretty reasonable. I always thought the rooms were decent and the slots pretty loose, too.

It's almost as good as going to Vegas when I read your reports each day!!
I think I will miss the logo of Terrible's more than the casino. I always found the casino to be dirty and in need of an upgrade.

I will be looking forward to day 6!
Thanks for the update.I think we were just teasing you to see if you actually did the bunji jump.

Thanks for the reports. I cant wait, i'll be there in 3 weeks!
Thanks for all your updates, very enjoyable reading. Hopefully your water pump isn't starting to fail, but sure sounds like it. They go fast when they start to die.
Thanks JMan, for this report and the photos as well. I'm also sorry to see the name Terrible's be gone from there but maybe if I come in October I'll try using the MRB coupon for the 2 To 1 Blackjack.

As for your car issues, I'm sorry to be reading that considering the amount of driving that you'll be doing during your "Summer Of Cal/Nev" reports.

Hopefully the problem won't be too costly!

As for 8/5/30 Jacks Or Better (Bonus Poker), it actually returns 98.48% and so I personally wouldn't call it "playable." At least somewhat playable for me begins at 99.1% and so 98.48% just doesn't cut it for me (that's about 0.70% less return than normal 8/5 Bonus Poker)!

Have a question...why will you never stay in the North Tower at Harrah's in Laughlin. We stayed there for the first time last year and was given a room in the north tower. It was a longer walk to everything but then so are many places. Just curious why??
Thanks for the reports and pictures. Just finished reading your first 6 days. A nice surprise since i didn't think you were doing one this year.
Often wondered why you hadn't mentioned Martin in your last few trips. Now we know.
Since I have never been to Cal Casinos and may never get to one I enjoyed your pictures and thoughts on Cal. Casinos.
I have not stayed at the Strat so thanks for the room pics. I like the Orleans a lot but find their beds really hard. Would be interested in your comparison.
