Summer of Tournaments – Day 15
I wanted to start today by making some corrections that readers and members have straightened my out on. First of all the MYVegas turnaround to use your benefits is 30 days, not 90. Also, I mentioned oysters in my chowder, which of course I meant clams, and finally I had said that the Showboat was torn down to make room for the Center City, and I meant to say The Boardwalk. I thank everyone for straightening me out when I make these errors. I write these reports either very late at night or very early in the morning. With as much and as often I write these blogs, mistakes inevitably happen. I’m grateful that I have you, my hundreds of editors out there that keep me honest and correct.
One last thing about my time at the Paris I forgot to mention: About a week before my stay there, I received a voice mail from the Paris. The person told me the usual welcome and they’re looking forward to having me, but they also said the room number I was registered in and that on Wednesday night (the last night I was there), there would be a club open and that the music is pretty loud. If that was a problem, to please call back and they’d move me to a different room on the other side of the hotel. I didn’t think anything of it and didn’t call back, after all, how loud could it be? Monday and Tuesday nights were just fine but on Wednesday I woke up at 10PM at the music. I was on the 28th floor but still eight floors below the top. I had no idea where the club was located, but the music was really LOUD. It took me awhile to get accustomed to it and fell asleep, but I know if it was that loud for me, what about all the other rooms around and above me. Was this club so important that it would piss off the higher level customers in all those floors? It went on until 4AM. Because Wednesday was my last night, I didn’t worry about it, but I’m scheduled to stay there again next month, so I’m going to probably have to sacrifice the great view for the quiet at night. I made my living in a band for 20 years, and our music was not 1/10th the volume this was; I just can’t imagine being in a club for hours with that many high decibels in my ears. The bass alone was shaking the room.
I got a good night sleep last night at the Suncoast (sweet silent nights), packed my things and put them in the car. It was 7X points for video poker and the bonus for quads, so I played some video poker for the next couple of hours. I did hit quad 7s, which was good for a $25 bonus (in free play loaded on my card and had to be used within 48 hours); however, I lost a little after running 2K through the machine.
It was back to Laughlin around noon and arrived at Harrah’s at 1:30. They were able to book me into a suite right away on the 15th floor. When I first reached the 7 Star level, I was disappointed that I wasn’t automatically being given suites, but lately (at least in Laughlin) I have been given a suite with a river view the past few visits.

I had an hour or so before I needed to register for tomorrow’s poker tournament, so I went down to the Diamond Lounge. The food was pretty good today: sandwiches, crab salad, salmon, and Beef Wellington. While there, I was approached by Terry who asked if I was the LVA guy. He’s here with his wife Ellen. They had driven up from Chandler, AZ and would be here for a couple of days before moving on to Las Vegas.

At five, I picked up my registration time (10AM) for tomorrow’s poker tournament. I have never done well at these (made it to the second round only once). The vast majority of players are people register just to take advantage of the promotion for the free rooms and don’t know much about poker. You’d think this would be a good thing but it’s harder than playing with experienced players. You can’t predict what they’re doing. These folks call with any two cards and get lucky and it’s really difficult to read these folks as they don’t play what you’d expect.
I have no plans to play at all today as I will make a shot at the 2500 tier point goal tomorrow. I’ll need to start catching some cards as so far in the trip it’s been pretty sad. Here’s hoping…
More tomorrow
