Summer of Tournaments - Day 17

Summer of Tournaments – Day 17

Before I get started, I should mention that the laptop I use to write all these reports has been full of problems the past couple of weeks. I constantly get missing .dll messages whenever I open any program. I always put it in sleep mode instead of turning it off because occasionally it won’t turn back on. So, if I suddenly miss a day or two, this would be the reason. When I finish up this first portion of trip reports, I’m going to leave it here in Las Vegas at a repair store the specialized in laptops. Being that I’ll be back home for a week, that should give them plenty of time to get things squared away.

There is no tournament today (I lost my shot yesterday) and I don’t plan on doing any gambling, so it’s off to the movies for me. I wanted to see the Jersey Boys movie. I had seen the play at the Paris and really enjoyed it and though the critiques were giving it mixed reviews, I wanted to find out for myself. It was off to the Riverside to attend the 9:15AM showing.

The Riverside Hotel and Casino on this bright Sunday morning

The Riverside Theater box office. I’ve spent more time here than in the casino this trip.

The movie’s pace was much slower than the play and quite a bit too long (almost 3 hours), however, the music is outstanding and all the characters were spot on. I enjoyed it. With nothing else planned today, I thought I might take run out to Bullhead and gas up the car ($3.33 per gallon) and check out the small Indian casino Spirit Mountain as you drive to Needles.

The Spirit Mountain Casino in Bullhead, AZ

Not a very impressive building from the outside.

The Spirit Mountain Casino is really just a slot house and not a very busy one at that.

This is what they call their “Sports Bar” area.

A couple of notes about the Spirit Mountain Casino: all the machines are coin operated. All of them are all the older, out-of-date machines. The video poker is almost humorous: 6/5 Jacks or better; 6/5 Bonus Poker; 6/5 Bonus Deluxe; 6/5 Double Bonus; 6/5 Double Double Bonus; and 6/5 Triple Bonus. Not a lot of creativity here. I walked up to the snack bar to check out the menu and noticed that a hamburger is $2.50 but a hot dog was $4.25. I asked the guy behind the counter if they were special hot dogs or something and he said they were just your basic Farmer Johns wieners. I asked why they were so much and he just told me he just works there, “I don’t know, man.” I won’t be coming back here anytime soon.

I headed back to Harrah’s and checked out the grub in the Diamond Lounge today, and once again, they had pretty good spread. Quarter pound hot dogs, fried peppers, and chicken wrap sandwiches. I would normally have just made this my dinner but I have a $25 food coupon that will expire before I return, so I’ll need to use that tonight. I enjoyed a drink, caught up on some emails and Word with Friends and then up to my room to watch the USA/Portugal game. They’ve really relaxed the rules here and you can now take a drink out with you as long as it’s in plastic. I’m not a big fan of soccer, but I love that the game clock never stops until half time, which means—no commercials. American football has a commercial every 30 seconds, it seems, and this game just continues without stoppage.

Giving up that goal with less than 30 seconds to go was wild. The screaming coming up from the bars was crazy. Fun game. It’s back to Las Vegas tomorrow and another slot tournament.

More tomorrow

Thanks Jon for taking us along on your summer trips! I look forward to them every day. Your gas price of $3.33 is a distant memory for us Canadians...$5.30 or more per gallon!
Thanks JMan for your Day 17 report plus the photos!

It's nice to see some Pinball at the theater.

As for the Spirit Mountain Casino, yes, that VP is pretty bad, but then again they have a captive audience and so can get away with stuff like that. And since you are saying that a Hamburger is $2.50, with the sign for a Burger and Beer for $3, that's basically only 50 Cents more for a Beer (if that's something you would want), unless that offer had restricted days or hours.

Jman, thanks for the reports. I enjoy seeing Vegas and Laughlin through your eyes every summer. Terry and Ellen look as cute as ever!

Thanks for the report. My laptop shows a "missing.dll' upon start up. i don't have a clue what that means!!!! My games and sites open up fine.
Glad you enjoyed Jersey Boys.I know I did.Since we are close to the same age,it takes us back to when the Four Seasons first became popular. And how the hell can you be in Nevada or a casino and not gamble?lol.Must be tremendous will power.
bbking: Stay here for 60 days straight, have a limited gambling budget...and yes...it's easy to have days you don't gamble. But I know what you're saying.
