Summer of Tournaments – Day 28
Had a good night’s sleep and woke up with enough time to write the report and post it before heading down to the valet to pick up my car and head over to the Rio for my first day of the slot tournament. A very nice touch at this valet, which is on the south side of the building facing Flamingo is that while you wait for your car, the valet captain comes by with a tray of ice cold waters for people waiting.
I drove to the Rio and had a small sausage sandwich at the Burger King inside the hotel for breakfast while waiting for my session. This is a strange slot tournament. It’s two days and each day is completely separate. There are 14 people playing at a time on the new style video machines and we only have two minutes to play—easy enough. The person that comes in second place of that two minute session wins $50 free play and the person that comes in first wins $75 free play and is invited back at the end of the day to face off all the other first place finishers for a grand prize of $5000. Then tomorrow, the whole thing starts again. So, you have to win two tournaments in a row.
I jammed away when it was my turn for the two minutes and when the time was up, I was in 11th place. I couldn’t even crack the top ten. There is zero skill for this game, just keep hitting the button for two minutes. It’s totally up to the random generator number in the machine who wins and
who losses. As I’ve said so many times in the past, they might as well draw names out of a hat.

The tournament area located across from the theater in the Masquerade casino.
I met up with Dean, who had left me a message to call him about seeing Carrot Top at the Luxor. By the time I reached him, it was too late. Dean is the gentleman I met who lives here in Las Vegas and is currently out of work but takes advantage of all the Caesars promotions and diamond lounges to help make ends meet. His host had contacted him about playing in the same poker tournament in Laughlin as I am this Wednesday. He wasn’t positive he was going to make it, but if he did decide to go if he could tag along with me. I told him that would be just fine. I would appreciate the company. He said he’d get back to me when he had made a decision.
I headed out to the Suncoast because it was a multiple point day plus they still had their quad 5s through 9s promotion. When I got there I was disappointed that it was only Sam’s Town that had a multiple point day; however, the quad promotion was still on. I played at the bar for a good couple of hours catching quad Aces, Kings, and 10s, which didn’t come with the bonus, but I still profited a hundred. I took that and put in the 5-play nickels which has a dealt royal progressive now over $9,500. Things didn’t go well there, and I dropped $50 before cashing out.
I made a fast stop across the street from the Suncoast at a shopping complex called Tivoli. I had reported on this place a year and a half ago around Christmas time. I was hoping to see it more busy this time considering it’s summer; however, there was hardly anyone hear at all. I checked a couple of the upscale restaurants. The Mexican eatery only had about eight customers and the large pizza place had a bartender, two servers who were just standing around because there was not one customer in the place…and it was noon! It’s really too back because this really is a very nice shopping area.

The beautiful Tivoli shopping complex close to deserted
Next stop was the Palms. My car was filthy and one of the benefits of my newly acquired Hall of Fame status was two free car washes a month. I went to the desk to get my two special coins that go into the machine (it’s one of those car washes like at the gas stations that doesn’t require anyone to be there). I drove my car along the back and inserted the coin. It simply fell into the return slot. This went on for a good five minutes. The damn thing doesn’t work! I went back to the club booth and told him and he said he’d have maintenance check into when they could.
Since I was there and had some time, I used some of my old points to buy a movie ticket to see Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 92% audience approval rating, which is really high. After seen the movie, I will say that it deserves every bit of the great reviews. It’s so well done in every aspect. If you’re into action movies, this is a good one. I’d caution children as there is a lot of violence and killing in it.
It was 5 PM and I drove back to Caesars to leave the car and spend a little time in the Diamond Lounge. Food this time around? Yep, chicken wings. At least they also added some fried rice to the mix. I had an ice tea, watched the home run derby and decided I might as well give them some play considering I’m comped here for three days in a great room.
I went to the Forum casino area and found a 3/5/10 play for quarters and played 7/5 Bonus. I lasted for a while and played a little over $5k and quit being that I was down $250. I was dealt a four-to-the-royal in spades with five shots at hitting it, but that didn’t happen. Caesars is doing some major remodeling of the sportsbook area. Gone are the old poker room, the Pure nightclub, and most of the Pussycat dolls area as it’s all boarded up. I will be curious as to what they’re doing when it’s finished. The poker room has been moved to right in from of Bobby Flay’s Mesa restaurant.

The new poker room at Caesars
It was almost 10 PM and I called it a night. There is another little extra that Caesars does. Each night I come to my room and the room has been set up for the night with turn down service, a couple of robes set out on the bed. Slippers are also places on each side of the bed and three gold chocolates on the bed stand. The drapes are closed and the TV has a soft music channel on. Very classy.
