Summer of Tournaments - Day 34
There are two programs I do my best not to miss while I’m on these summer trips, “So You Think You Can Dance” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” It starts at 6:30 AM, so I have to make sure I’m up in time to catch it. I was glad I did—another excellent show. After it was over, I noticed I still had time to make the 10 AM poker tournament at Sam’s Town, so I rushed to get out of the room and first stopped at the Costco to fill up ($3.61) and made it plenty of time for the tournament. Because it’s the weekend, there were five tables filled (50 players).
I was card-dead for the first hour, but managed to pick up some pots after the game switched to no-limit. With only 15 players left, I had a second highest stack at the table and was heads up with the chip leader. I had two pair but there with four cards on the table, there was a possible flush draw, and if that’s what she was going for, I needed to go all in. My guess was right, but was surprised she called anyway and caught her flush on the river and I was out. Sometimes you can play smart, play right, and still lose. That’s the game.
Because I’ve been on a losing streak the past week or so, I’ve decided to stop playing video poker for a while and just stick to the tournaments. I only have one reserved tournament left on this trip, so in order to keep the theme of the summer alive, I hope to buy in to as many as I can find time. Of course, unless I cash in some these my summer totals and balance will take a hit. On my way back to the Rio, I thought I’d make a fast stop at the Palms to see if they had fixed their car wash, and was happy to see that they did. Looking at it before entering, I suspected I wasn’t going to get much of a wash, but I was surprised how good it cleaned my car.

The Palms VIP car wash. It doesn’t look like much, but it cleans the car pretty darn good.
I headed back to my room after a stop at Target for a few needed things and stayed there as I waited for a call from my parents who are coming to town for a bowling tournament. At about 3 PM, my dad had called as they had just arrived at the Orleans; however, with two major tournaments going on there, the check-in line was almost out the door. I headed over and sat with my mom as he finally got checked in. My sister was supposed to come along, but she had a small health issue and chose to skip it. My mother doesn’t bowl anymore and my dad has three tournaments, so I’m going to make sure she is entertained over the next couple of days while he throws the big hard ball down the lane at the pins.
They finally got into their room and the suitcases soon came up by a very enthusiastic, young bellman. We headed down to the Oyster Bar for dinner (my third time here this trip). My dad had the Jambalaya, which looked amazing. He said it was fantastic. I told my mom that Martin highly recommended the Seafood Chowder (a combination Boston and Manhattan), so we both had a cup of that and I had a shrimp Caesar’s Salad. All the dishes were really amazing and being full, my parents headed up to their room and I headed back to the Rio.

Taken from the east parking structure of the Rio. I’m approaching 65 and I still like to count how many cars the train engine is pulling (112).
My last night in my nice suite here at the Rio. As my gambling is done for now, I’m going to enjoy one of the free in-room movies and make it an early night.
