Summer of Tournaments – Day 36
I think I should backtrack a little bit on my initial thoughts about the room here at the Plaza. Because I’m on the back end of the hotel, I don’t hear the Fremont Experience music at all and though I can hear the trains below, they’re not so loud as to wake me up. Back in the day the engineers used to always blow their whistles when they approached the downtown area, but I guessing they put an end to that. The TV has Direct TV, which includes almost 70 channels (the best selection of any rooms I’ve stayed this trip). I suppose my only complaint would be the stamp size bathroom, but that’s really a small thing (pun intended). I think I could make this my “downtown home” if need be.
The lobby area has a Mexican restaurant, a 24-hour Subway, a McDonald’s, a bar, a coffee kiosk, and a Hash-Hash A-Go-Go. There’s also a pizza joint next to the sportsbook. When you check in, you’re given a coupon book that has a $5 match play for blackjack, a $5 match play for roulette, 500 slot points, free sandwich at McDonald’s, a free Krispie Kreme at the coffee kiosk, and free admission to the Louie Anderson show Wednesday through Saturday. All-in-all, one of the best registration coupons books anywhere.

The mall area adjacent to the lobby at the Plaza.
I found a bank of machines that had full pay jacks or better and 9/6 Bonus Deluxe, but they don’t give you any bonus points.

The one bank of full pay machines have a sign at the bottom saying no slot points on these machines…boo!

The pool area on the 7th floor of the Plaza. Just a pool, no shade of any kind, but people do love a pool.

The pool might be rather plain, but there’s a good view of the Fremont Experience
I drove to the Rio to pick up a letter that an LVA member sent me and hadn’t yet arrived when I was staying there. I went to the VIP registration, and they managed to trace it down. I waited for a few minutes and two guys arrived with the letter, checked my ID, had me sign two documents and handed me the letter—pretty funny, you’d think it was top secret document. In the letter? A $25 match play chip for the D, and an un-cashed ten-cent voucher. I had to laugh a little at the ten-cent voucher. Thank you S.
I headed back to the Silverton where my mom and dad and step sister met me in the lobby of the theater to see Maleficent. Though I’d seen it before, it was just as enjoyable and once again—the popcorn was excellent. My parents decided to go home tomorrow, a day early after the final game on the bowling tournament, so I said my goodbyes and headed over to the South Point where I was going to register in a poker tournament. However, when I got there, I had the time wrong and had already missed it, so I bought in to the 2/4 game for $60 and settled in for the afternoon. This turned out to be a bad decision because though I had sat there for just under two hours biding my time for a decent hand, it never came. I was never dealt even one Ace the entire two hours. My $60 was gone before I won even one hand. It was a bad poker day.
I headed back downtown. I talked with David (timberwolf), who had gone back to San Diego about plans for the MPT tournament, and he strongly recommended that I try the new BBQ place that opened in Binions at the back. He said the ribs were the best. Though I had just had ribs at TGIFriday’s yesterday, I walked down. I realize it’s a Tuesday, but on this evening, there was only one costumed panhandler out today. Though there is a new law prohibiting bottles or cans under the canopy, plenty of people seemed to not know.
The Smokin’ BBQ place that is located at the back of Binions is in the old, beautifully ornate bar. I understand that while cleaning a storage area in the basement, they found an old, but in good condition smoker. They decided to put it to use and opened this BBQ spot. I sat at the bar and ordered a rack which comes with corn on the cob, BBQ beans, coleslaw, and corn biscuit for $13.95. The ribs were excellent, but what really caught my attention were the beans—perhaps the best I’ve ever tasted. I told the manager he needs to bottle them. It was a great, and very reasonably priced, meal.

The downtown Fremont Experience blends the very old with the very new.

I meant to get of pic of the Golden Gate, but this girl got in the way…
I headed back to my room at the Plaza and called it a night.
