Sorry I’m so late with this report. And sorry this report won’t be up to my usual standards; I’m crunched for time. I think it’s best if I say something rather than keeping silent.
• I stayed at four hotels on this trip. The first was the Golden Gate. My room on the 4th floor was much the same as the last room I had there – nice TV, nice iPod dock, but very small – especially the bathroom. A little noisier than I’m used to, with noises from Fremont St. at night and construction during the day. But I did get a decent view of the Plaza. BTW, I didn’t see any construction in the casino itself, which was much the same as always.
• The second hotel was the Orleans for two nights. My room on the 2nd floor was much the same as my other rooms there – decent, but nothing to go wow over. I saw some Lingerie Bowl participants in the hotel – at least they had the T-shirts and the general build. No autograph requests or rudeness from this quarter.
• The third hotel was the Gold Coast for Super – er, Big Game, Sunday. I got a renovated room on the 5th floor – pretty nice.
• The fourth hotel was the Rio for the last two nights. 11th floor, typical Rio room. I did get a little view of the Strip.
• The meet – I had a lunch buffet at the Orleans just before the meet at Big Al’s (thanks Tom). Linda came slightly after 3. We spotted each other immediately, before Tom, her driver and this meet’s leader, came by. Then came the other guy (didn’t catch his name, sorry). He was the one that did most of the talking. But everyone got a chance to contribute. Much of the discussion was about the good old days and I had little to add; I was happy to soak it all in. Tom & Linda had the clam chowder and had good things to say about it, so there you go. Your recommendation when you’re at the Orleans. Thanks for sharing, guys.
• I used most of the coupons I intended to. The coupon running went OK, with one exception I’ll outline below.
• Fitzgeralds. First of all I should report that it seemed to be much the same as it always had been – which is probably good, though who knows how long it will last. OK, I redeemed my Push 22 MRB coupon, which turned into a “Get out of hand free” coupon and headed to the nearest blackjack table. It was a $10 minimum and I bet that most hands. The floorman was explaining my coupon to another floor guy when I got a 14 against a dealer 10. The coupon I got allowed me to, essentially, give up on the hand and push the bet. 14 vs. a 10 was a darned fine hand to do that to so I used it on that hand. I should’ve walked away right then. Can you believe I lost $366 there? No excuse for it, but them’s the breaks and I had been really lucky for most of the past three years, so I guess I was due for something like this.
• Sports betting – Linda can skip this paragraph. The reason why I like coming during the Whatever You Call It Bowl is because there are hundreds of bets you can make on the game, some of which offer an edge – real or imagined. To make a very long story short, I made $477 in bets and cashed $640 in tickets, highlighted by a big $300 parlay from the Orleans. I would have made about $250 more if Gronk had caught that hail mary, but that’s water under the bridge.
• I did very little betting other than the coupons and sports. I did find a couple of 8/5 bonus Dream Card at the Orleans. This did not go well.
• I had several meals in town and made a few notes. I’m still enchanted by the breakfast buffet at Paris. And yes, you can stack coupons with using your points. The Rio breakfast buffet was pretty good too. Their All-American Bar & Grill was disappointing, though. And I found something on the GC’s lunch buffet I didn’t like. I’m not sure what their peach cobbler actually was, but it didn’t taste like anything I cared for.
• On the last day I had rallied to about $50 down. What to do? I know, I’ll try to find a game to bet on so I can get ahead. I chose the ALA-AUB basketball game among three likely prospects. I took Auburn & the 5 ½. It started well and Auburn got up by 7 early. But slowly the game got away from them and they ended up losing by 16. So I ended up $160 down for the trip, ending my 7 trip LV winning streak. But I still had fun. Really.
• Next gambling trip is to Reno in April. Next trip to Las Vegas looks like it will be in October.
Thanks for reading. I promise I’ll do better next time.
