Trip Report - June 18-23, 2023

Great report!  I really need to hit Whiskey Liquor Up. I keep forgetting it is there.

And that is interesting about how they do the Million Dollar picture now.  Have to remember to try that too,

Really nice TR, Texas T.  I always tell people re how large the portions are in Vegas, "Order one, it will be more than enough for two."  But...then I forget, so that I and whomever is with me still can't resist ordering more than we can possibly consume.  The descriptions on the menu are tempting.  Oh, well, it is educational to see how an item comes out...great, OK, so so, never again, etc.

One thing:  Is it possible if I already have a room reservation someplace, it might block me from getting the "promo mailer?"  Actually I think somebody else put that idea in my head and it probably isn't true.  Just keep up with things and hope for the best, call if you suspect a promo is out there that you haven't received yet.

Glad you had so much fun!

I can only speak for my experience at Four Queens but I always get promotional mailers, even if I already have a reservation.   I make reservations 4-6 months in advance and have ALWAYS called later, after I have gotten a 4Q mailer to update my reservation with the new (better) promotional rate.

On my last trip I had the room booked for 5 nights, no free nights.  Made the reservation in February. When I got the June mailer I called them up and they immediately gave me the two nights free which was the latest promotion.     NO PROBLEM!

Based on my experience at 4Q, booking the room early has NO downside.  They don't cross reference existing reservations with mailers.  With early booking you guarantee a room rate, and can only improve it with the latest promotion.

Sounds like the 'voice' of experience and you know the road bumps to plan ahead for.  Sounds great!

Well, this seems more like kudus to 4Q than a piece of general advice. I've had pretty much the opposite happen at other properties, where an existing, earlier reservation garbaged up a subsequent promotional offer. My fondest memory of that was at the old SPLAM (PALMS for dyslexics), where they said I couldn't use my promo until I stayed the three nights I had already reserved!!! That was also the first hotel I remember ever charging me a resort fee on a comped room. They're lucky I didn't have enough plastic explosives with me at the time.

Nowadays, though, possibly because of pandemic-necessitated flexibility, you can kill pretty much any existing reservation up to 24 hours before arrival with no repercussions and as the drunk tattooist wrote, "NO REGERTS." So you should be able to switch out to a comp offer easily. Even at the SPLAM.

Nice report.   An FYI on your comment "Good thing for the mayor that tourists who are stuck in traffic can’t vote."    The Strip is outside of the juridiction of Las Vegas that the mayor represents (the southern border is around the Strat area), so the mayor has no say on Strip construction, nor the Formula 1 event coming to Las Vegas.

The REAL "mayor" of the entire fiefdom of Las Vegas is the collective uberconsciousness of the casinos. Elected officials mean nothing there.

Kevin,

Given the raping and pillaging players experience at most Las Vegas casinos, I purposely began my reply with "I can only speak for my experience at Four Queens".   I totally believe your Palms story.  Your experience may (most likely) parallel Ceasars properties and other large casino corporations.

I also do give kudos to 4Q.  On top of good VP paytables and comps, they have always been more than fair with us.  While I didn't mention it before, as I finished my December 2023 4Q reservation, the clerk specifically said to me  "call us when you get a December promotion and we'll honor it".   Can't hate that corporate attitude.  It is one of the reasons I haven't stayed anywhere else in about 5 years.

That said, they aren't perfect.  Example: while 4Q has some excellent VP paytables, I would never play BJ there.  Their mandatory $1 BJ side bet, even with 3/2 odds, makes it one of the worst BJ games on the strip.

As always, people need to do their research to get the best deals in Las Vegas and "vote with your feet".

That "force it down your throat" BJ bet is one of the worst things I've ever seen a casino do to its players, which makes its implementation by the 4Q all the more puzzling. It's a dick move you'd much more expect from the Strip megatoilets.

Couldn't help but notice, though, last time I was there, lots o' folks were happily playing it. Makes me wonder what would happen if a casino introduced a new feature at their craps tables where if the shooter rolls an 11, a security guard punches him in the nuts. I'll bet people would play anyway.

Kevin,

You're right about how incongruent the "Wheel" BJ bet is at 4Q, given the otherwise good property it is.   I hope it isn't a forerunner of other nickle and dime issues to come there.

I appreciate the analogy you drew of punching the player in the nuts for an 11.   Created a great visual image. Most good humor / satire is built around an unfortunate kernel of truth.

When the casino presents a new (bad) bet to the player they make it successful with bright graphics, and even better,  with a lot of motion.  The $1 "wheel" bet covers all the bases.

Maybe there's a business opportunity here.  Need to come up with a truly outrageous bet/game, give it a catchy name, provide the house an 30 - 45%+ minimum advantage, then then add every bit of "eye-candy" and sound effects possible on the table...create the whole "package".

Example:

Could create a hybrid BJ table/pinball machine.  Make a clear BJ table for the initial bet, and add a modified pinball machine underneath it for the side bet payout.  Flashing lights, exciting sounds, pinball action, it would have ALL the elements for instant success with the lemmings.  Odds would be totally unimportant, they'd be hypnotized. Just need to trademark it and watch the residuals pour in.

Somebody is probably working on this already...

Some of what you allude to has already been done and implemented - though not a new "game" they are (1)  6/5 blackjack, (2) resort fees, (3) paid parking, (4) mandatory tipping - you get the picture.
