I think it's a successful attempt to turn a video poker machine into a slot machine. Just spin and watch. Strategy is irrelevant.
The degree to which that's true depends on how you get the multipliers. If they just randomly pop up on the deal, like Super Times Pay, no thinking is involved. But if they're based on your final hand, like Ultimate X, some strategy changes can increase your EV.
I also hate the fact that all the multiplier games have worse paytables than their non-multiplier equivalents. The multipliers usually add back a tiny bit of EV, but not near what is lost by the paytables downgrade.
We have a local casino within 50 miles that has regular JoB 99.54 at Supertimes. That is kind of fun at 99.81% I believe. Can even play it in nickels and dimes. Last time I played that exact game was at Goldcoast in the late 2000's. That quickly went away.
